MR E. L. MITFOUD, THE ORIENTAL TRAVEL- LER.—V\ e are happy to learn by the last overland lIIail that this gentleman has ai-rived in safety at Herat, having left his companion, Mr H Layard, to explore some hitherto undiscovered antiquities in Persia. After spending gome time with Colonel Taylor, the British resident at Bagdad, these gentle- men set out early in June last on their journey through Persia, and reached the camp of the Shah, near Hamadan, where they were well treated, hut detained a considerable time, until by Jha generous kindness of Baron Bode (attache to the Russian embassy), they were relieved from their difficulties, he having prevailed oil the Vizier of the Shah to "Tallt them a firman and inehenandar to convey them in safety on their several routes. Mr E. L. IVlitford was detained twenty days at Meshed by severe in. disposition, and speaks in terms of the warmest gratitude of the aitentipti He experienced from Mo- hammed Rewit Bey, one of the chief men of the city, whose guest he was. The latter part of the route was rendered very fatiguing by forced marches to escape the Turcomans, who plundered and made prisoners all they could find. The governors of most of the villages were out in pursuit of these brigands. Through the blessing of Providence Mr Mitford escaped all dangers, and arrived at Herat on the 27ill of September, where he was most kindly and cordially welcomed by Major Todd, British envoy at the Court of Shah Kiinrain and when his health is re-established lie purposes continuing his route through Afghanistan to India. If these tra- vellers are permitted to reach their ultimate destina- tion, they will have performed what may in reality be called au overland journey lo India.

CORN TRADE.
CORN TRADE. Throughout the past week the Wheat Trane maintained ail improving tendency with a lively demand for the best qalitiea of English Wheat. The supply upon the whole was tolerab!y fair, with reference to the two preceding' weeks; but the miller41 being mostly out of st<-ck, and having tx. perienced a ready sale for Flour of late, were induced to iiiii-chase freely, even at advanced rates. The transnctions in Foreign Wheat were considerable amongst town and country dealers, and several large cargoes were taken for shipping, to Liverpool and other porta. There was consequently much more animation in the trade than we have witness d for solne time past and a material advance in most of the samples on sale. The stock of free Foreign Wheat in London is said to be much diminished, and the continued demand from various parts of the kinedom seems likely to occasion prices to l.e s'ill higher. By accounts received from most of the principal provincial Grain Markets up to the close of last week, the supplies of Wheat came forward sparingly, and a very good demand prevai ed, at gradually improving prices. The inquiry also was very lively for the best samples of Malti !» £ Barley at rather advanced rates, and the supplies < f Grain genet ally being only moderate, the value of most articles was firmly supported. At the Scotch IlIdrkels general y, during the last few days, a very brisk demand had been experienced for the moderate supptiesot Wheat that came to hand, and an advance upon the average of from Is. to 2s. per quarter was obtained. Letters from It eland report an improve- ment in the Wheat trade at the principal market** during the past week of from 1<. to 2s. per quarter. At the commencement of the present week, a very fair supply of Wheat was received in Mark Lane", from Essex and Keni, though limited from Suffolk and other counties. The attendance of town all.1 country millers being i-ii I her numerous, and evincing a desire to purchase, factors asked in the first instance considerably advanced rates, but the con- dition of many of Iii. samples being ;iffeeted by the dampness of the weather, rendered it difficult to establish the rates demanded, except upon the finest «amples. The supplies of Malting Barley have continued liberal of late, notwithstanding- which there is at the present time a very goo;l (ieitikitid from the maltsters, and prices have now rather an improving tendency. There is also a little more inquiry for good grinding parcels. The supplies of New Beans last week were rather larger than usual, mid the farmers appear to be at present threshing them out pretty freely. There has been, however*, scarcely any reduction in prices, as the demand still contiuues lively, and it is expecied by many -hat higher prices "ill shortly be obtained! Oid Beall" are quite a drug at the present time, aud prices have materially declined. Tile only foreign arrivals received during the pas' week were 3 205 barrels of American Flour. The duties upon foreign Grain generally being exceedingly high at the present time, renders it improbable thut supplies vvdl be continued to any material extent. Although considerable quantities of foreign While Peas bate gone into consumption, there is still a lai-ce show of samples at market, and very little improvement in prices has occurred. The supplies i f Oats lately have been exceedinly limiteù from Ireland, Scot- laud, and our own coasts, and there is at the present time a very small proportion of fine Oats of any description at market. The majority of the Irish samples now offering weigh only from 35 b. to 581b per bushel. Although the trade Ititely hit, tiot been lively, prices have been for the most part rather disposed to improve, particularly for the best samples at market. Dealers si-e at present however, rather cautious in their operations, under an expectation of an early supply from Ireland. The sates of Flour ammijM the bakers lately been lively, aud the advance in Wheat fully justifies the recent improvement of 3s. per sack.—John. Bull.

WIIITE CARItOTS.Sir C. Burrell describes his crop of while cattle carrots last year in Sussex as tii, viii,, gro,n ibotit 1,3J0 bushels per acre after tailing and topping. Some of the roots penetrated the earth to the depth of 3 feet 5 inches. Sir Ciiarles does not consider this a very scouring crop, especially considering the vast increase of nutritious winter fodder, with consequent eeononv of ""y for both fatting and lean stock, and e-pecially milch cous, their cream and butter being as good and as free from any ill flavour 03 when feeding on the pastures; and likewise, look- ing Ic the great increase of farm yard manl/le resultin from its consumption, to which may be justly added the clean, friab'e, and finely pulverised state in which the ground is lelt after the removal of the crop, particularly well adapted for rid«-in°- up during the winter, and sowing with barley and seeds in the ensijin;r Sir Charles Fo%,red his seed broadcast at about 6 Ibs per acre costing Is per lb. Tile best soils for Ihis crop are said to be free woiking deep soils, well and deeply drained and siibsoiled.-Maidsto;ie G(izelle. HUNTING IN THE PYRENEES. — A letter fr'm Arglee.. in the Hautes Pyrenees, rela es that as M. Castest, an intrepid sportsman of Barnes, was* returning from hunting the bouqueiin, a species of mountain goat, he saw on the point of a steep rock, between Tourles and Bouchereau, near the Cirque of Gavarni, a large bear, which 'had been already wounded by some Spanish hunters and tired at the animal again when within 20 yards of him The beast rolled towatds him, succeeded in seizing him, and dragged him down the descent to the depth of 40 yards. Here He bear became ex- hausted from loss of blood, and letting go his holdp fell 10 the bottom of the precipice. NJ Caste.,t, though severely torn, saved himself by clinging to a jotting point of the rock, and was supported back to Bareges by three trackers, who also recov- ered the fallen bear, with which, and three bouqlletins he had previously shot, he returned in triiitnph.—Gardeners' Chronicle.
