FAIMHIE OF THF. POTATO CROP. In conse- quence of a partial failure of ti e potato crop for the 1.1-t three years, I have used every exertion to discover the cause. 1 attribute it to the early frosts, that blight the stalk, and give all appearance of iiiaturity to a crop, which induces the farmer to dig his potatoes before they are ripe, and to place illein it, large quantities in pits; the consequence is, those placed towards (he centre of these pits lieaf, and lose their vegetative property, "hi'e those placed near the sides are preserved by the earth with which they are covered, and by that nieaiis become mature without injury, and even obtain a m< isiure that the others do not. have seen many persons take potatoes from the centre for seed, thinking from the dry appearance of them that thn would he more sure to vegetate than the others but 1 have prevailed on them to plant some of those from near the sides of the pit. The latter they found to grow to Iheir satisfaction, while the others, on which they relied for a crop, proved a total failure. This, I tliink, shows that the heating in the pits is the principal cause of the failure. Gar- (lelle)-s' Cill-oilicle. GYPSUM. — We some time since (p. 215) inserted a paragraph, taken from a contemporary, in which it recommended that eyp^um should he burnt before being employed. We have since received two or three letters of (lie statement, and that to burn the gypsum is to destroy it It was in vain that we told the writers, in our Notices to Correspondents that they were mis- taken, they wou'd not believe us. Let us hope they will lie salisfied with the following note from Ulr Johnson, whose authority upon such a point they wilt hardly dispute :['lie conclusion to which same of your correspondents have arrived with regard to ill effects produced by c Joining gypsum intended for manure is eeriainly erroneous. The application of heat to sulphate of lime merely diives off about twenty per cent. of its water of aiid reduces it more casily to a tine powder: and by thus heillg" reduced to a state of' minute division, it becomes much more readily soluble ill water. It is in vain, therefore, that some of the nearly insoluble, roughly powdered, cryslal isrd specimens of sulphate of lime are applied to the soil, for the grass crops for which it is chiefly adapted are unable to absotb what is not even in a state of s01ution." Gardellcn' Chronicle. RF.MARKABLE TREES NF.AR VFttviFRs —Near Maznres, in Belgium, there is a Hornbeam some centuries old, whose branches at some feet from the ground have been trained in a circular manner so as to form a natural bovver. The living branches of this tree descend, as it were, a staircase, and accommodate themselves to it, as they also do to some dead branches stuck in the ground and fixed to the larger branches of the tree. Twelve persons may be protected under the thickest shade. ft is the most extraordinary fee in the country, excepting one called the Boil Dieti (le the neighbouring residence of YI. Sirord. This tree has been cut into an artificial sculpture, though, according to the tradition of the country, it naturally took the form of our Saviour. Whenever the season was too dry, and when the agriculturists wished rain, they worshipped this tree, which was found in the middle of a lieatl) but otic fine year when the inhabitants of Cheny, a neighbouring village, wished rain, they removed the tree into their church, when it rained so much that they feared the universal deluge was come, and they were forced to carry back the Bon Dieu de rancreinont to its natural habitation, where il is still lo be seen. This country P-Iso contains one ot he most cnrious examples of the strange form- thai trees will take when they row from between ocks. O11 an elevation near Mazures, near the entrance of the Grotto des Lollais may be seen three ) iks of most rem.11 liable form, the trunks of which iare gi-oittj fl.it against the rock, and covered is uneven surface with expansions of bark in such a nanner, that it looks like the skin of a tirei- thrown ipgligeutly over a sofa in a drawing room.
