THOS. COOKF,, Clerk to the said Company. Newport, October 20, 1841. OPAIBA.-Upot) reviewing the catalogue of evils produced by Copaiba, it may be fairly asked is there any one possessed of common prudence who would employ it? Can any unprejudiced and conscien- tious person advise its use? Are we to do harm that good may come ?" Any more in physic than morality, when too the former is certain, and the latter more than doubtful-fof we must not forget that Copaiba is as uncertain as it is injurious—at one tll., appearing to suddenly check and overcome the disease, and at another entirely failing in producing either. If is "Iso deceptive as regards the permanency of the desired effect The patient frequently rei iicing in his supposed recovery, and in a few days, or even hours, is sadly disappointed by the return of his coniplaillt with renewed or increased virulence-the symptoms beine much aggravated by the consequent loss of time and the unequal action of the med tine. It is now clearly the duty of the medical profession to avoid and reprobate the use of a drng wi.ich has so little to justify its administration, and so much to condemn it If such baneful effects as desciioed are to he attributed to the pure Balsam of C-paiha, it can he readily imagined how much they are aggravated by the adul- terations daily practised, being mixed with inore or lrss of turpentine, mastiche. rejected castor and rape oils, &c. &c. It is to the uninitiated perfectly astonishing to what an extent this disgraceful practice is carried, more especially since the nostrums firmed from it have so much increased. It is frequently to be purchased in Ihis s'are at retail druggists f,»r less than the cost price of the genuine articlc,-a strong pruof that such In:1;1 he factitious;—indeed it is a fact that this natural pro- duction of South America is actually rn :de in En<rI.inti. Not many years sinCfJ the Sun Fi e Office ret used to indemnify a party for loss by fire, on the ground that the premises had been used for hazardous purposes, not expressed in the policy, namely, that of making Copniba. Such being t-.c fact of the drug itself, the argument will, of cou>se, apply with more or less force to ail prepara- tions of or from it, for so powerful are its injurious properti. s, and s:) closely are they connected with those (if any) of a beneficial tendency, that to abate the one is to annihilate the oth"r. As existing in nature, they are allied and by such nicety of chemical union, that to separate them is (by destroying the original principle of combination) to produce a most unhappy result, namely, an inert substance, and one still more acrid than the drug in its natural state one of these is pro- duced when deprived, or partially so, of its nauseous flavotir; to deprive it of which is to separate the active principle, and thus destroy all chance of success from its use Now, how is this known result attempted to be avoided f By incurring a still greater evil-that of com- I timing with it equally injurious, though more palatable, ,tr,i,s. Spausah flies, potash, stimulating gums,&c., by which the original disease is greatlv aggravated and prolonged. In conclusioti.-avo-,I, at all times, and under all disguises, this pernicious and ever-adulterated drug; sulfer not any one to persuade to its use ,— withhold from your confidence the professional mn. who persists, contrary to reason and experience, in presciihing it for you-for, be assured, sooner or later, more or less, you will suffer from its baneful influence- The Balsamic Pills, prepared by Mr. Wray, 314, Strand, and Holborn Hill, are free from any of the above objections; they act specifically on the urinary passages, and from their tonic properties, tend to strengthen- the systein and improve the general health. They req uiie neither confinement nor atterat:on of diet (except ab stinence from stimulants, where considerable inflam- mation exists), and, as experience has amply proved they will effect a cure sooner than copaiba (the dan- gerous results of which, in the inflammatory stages, are too well known to need further comment), or any other medicine in present use, and mAy be justly considered the only safe and efficacious remedy in all stages of those lisordeis. In addition to these advantages, the very c mveiuent form in which this invaluable preparation is 'ffered to the public must also be considered a desi- deratum. Prepared only by M. O. Wray, and sold wholesale md retail, at 118, Holborn Hill; and 314, Strand, OIK loor from Catherine Street; and for the accommodation If Shippers and Seafaring people, at No. 8. Be- twren nine and ten th beC £ )'"j disease Sciatica; tl¡e..gonising pain which I suffered in my leg* and thighs for so long a period baffles any descripiion which I can possibly give of my then miserable state. I could seldom obtain either rest or sleep. I had the best medical advice, including that of two physicians in London, without obtaining any essential relief. I went to Margate, and had the best medical advice, trying the warm bath there and at other places, without obtaining any bent fit. A short ti ne ago I was recommended to try Blair's Gout and Rheumatic Pills; and was thereby induced to purchase a box of this valuable medicine of Alcssrs Hammond and Crt, Chemists, of this town, and before I had taken the quantity therein contained, I was entirely free from pain, and speedily recovered my health by taking a few more Piils, and happily there has been no return of this distressing malady. You are at liberty to publish my caae. in the hope thereby that this excellent medicine may be the means of relieving others. I am, Sir, yoar's rrspectu lv, J. B. MISKIN, Brewer and Maltster, Hartford, I(pnt. I'S.-If T could possibly speak in stronger terms of your invaluable medicine, 1 should be most happy for it is impossible for language to describe the relief I have experienced. The never failing effects of B LAIC'S GOUT and RHEUMATIC PILLS in curing every description of Gout and Rheumatism. have s. cured to them a celebrity unequalled by any medicine of past or present time. They not only give relief in a few hours, where the patient has been driven nearly to madness by the excruciating tortures of this disease, but restore to per- fect health in an inconceivably short space of time. They are equally speedy and certain in rheumatism, either chronic or acute, lumbago, sciatica, pains in the head or face, and indeed for every rheumatic or goutv affection; in fact, such has bt,eii the rapidity, perfect ease, and complete safety of this medicine, that it has astonished all who have taken it, and there is not a city, lown, or village in the kingdom, but contains man. grateful evidences of tne benign influence of this medI- cine. RIGHTS OF THE TRUSTEES OF DISSENTING CHAPELS TO VOTE FOR COUNTY M< MBeits.—An important case was decided at Birmingham on Wed- nesday >e iiuight, in the revising barrister's court lot North Warwickshire. Hitherto, ever since the pass- ing of the Reform Bill, the barristers in that county have invariably allowed Dissenting trustees the right of voting at county elections but Messrs. Wilmore and Barnaby have reversed this decision, and the con- sequence is, that a great number of voters have been struck off in the Whis-Uadicul iutoiost. At the struck off in the Whis-Uadicul iutoiost. At the recent revision of the county lists in Gloucester, the revising barristers rejected thn claims, or struck off the names of the Roman Catholic Priest, the Unitarian Minister, and the Baptist Minister, in that city and also struck off the names of six trustees of the Wes- leyan Cliapel-a decision which corresponds with that given at Birmiugham. A violent murder, with circumstances of great cruelty and cold-blooded atrocity, Ins been discovered at New York to have been 'committed upon a Mr. Adams, a printer, who had gone to demand payment of a just debt from a man of the name of Colt, who was about to abscond. Whilst in Colt's office he was assailed by that individual, and murdered, it is sup- posed, with a hatchet. Colt afterwards stripped the body naked, packed it in a box, and shipped it to a fictitious address at Louis, in the far Western States, but it was discovered before the vessel sailed from New York. lie was committed for trial. TRADE OF GLOUCESTER —We are happy to observe that a general feelina of confidence in business has again sprung up in this city, and the trade is ad- mitted Oil all hands to be in a considerable improved state. We trust that this is only the commencement of a much better state of things than has existed here for some months past. The improvement to which we refer applies more particularly to tradesmen and shopkeepers in the commercial business of the port we cannot, we are sorry to say, as yet record any material i(nprovein(,.iit.-GIou-^estcr Jou)-nal. POST OFFICL, THEFTS.—A judicial investigation has for some time been making into an illegal series of thefts of money froin lettrrs passing through our post office, mentioned by us about a week ago; and, we understand, the result has been of a very startling description. About 100 letters, it is ascertained, have been opened, and money abstracted to a very large amount, in various sums from 1Z. and upwards 701. have been taken from one letter, and altogether there have been appropriated by some person or persons about 3001. It appears that, after the money was abstracted, the letters were, in many instances, permitted to pass on to the parties to whom they were addressed. So far as has been ascertained, the thefts cannot, we believe, bo traced to any particular person,—Glassy/ Journal

FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SICK AND INF/RM. The following is submitted to their consideration, touching on the benefits arising from the use of that in- estimable Medicine, THE CELEBRATED CORDIAL BALM OF RAKASIRI, OR NATURE'S INFALLIBLE RESTORATIVE. Piepared only by the Inventors and Sole Proprietors' Messrs JORDAN and Co., SURGEONS, 3, COLLEGE GRhEN. (three doors from St. Augus- tine's Church), BRISTOL and 20, Southampton St. Bloomsbury Square, London. MESSRS. JORDAN takes this opportunity of informing those who labour under Debility, Indigestion, Depression of Spirits, Trembling or Shaking of the Hands and Limbs, loss of Apetite, obstinate Coughs, Shortness of Bicati), Head-ache, Gout, Rheu matism, Asthma, Consumption, Seminal Weakness, &c.- Gleets, Syphillis, &c., &c that they. after many years of professional experience, and wo-t indefatigable assiduity, insured their success by a discovery the most important and beneficial to the human race ever vet introduced to the public, and thousands have testified with heartfelt and grateful satisfaction the instantaneous and surprising cures performed by the celebiated Cordial Balm of Rakasiri, Or Nature's Infallible Restorative. Its primary object is to relieve those persons who, by an immoderate indulgence of their passions, have ruined theit constitutions, and brought on various affections < f the Nervous Svstem, Obstinate Gleets, involuntary emissions, excesses, irregularity, obstructions of certain evacuations, sickness, total impot. ncy, barrenness, &c., &c., observations on Neivous and Sexual Debility, irnpo- tel!Yl &c., &c., pirticillai,ly addressed to the Nervous, Consumptive, and those whose constitutions have become impaired by early imprudence. in coriitiienciii., tills highly important subj ct, we cannot imriress too strongly on our readers the divine ordinance, Increase and Multiply," for by constantiy bearing in mind the object we were sent into this world for, it will at onee be spton how sinful must be the practices of him or her; who by fatally anticipating the purposes of nature, are incapable of procreation, and entail everlast- ing misery, shame, and ignominy oil themselves, here aud hereafter. Let those who are afflict< d in the follow, in: manner rtfleet upon the cause that poduces such direful havoc on the wholesome appetites of life: Oisordered Stomach, Dry Cough. Weakness in the Voice, Hoarsen", s, Shortness of Breath upon the least exercise, and rclaX:lt!,111 of the whole system; those also afflicted with Weakness of Sight or Memory, Palemss Languor of the Eycs, should take time to consider that youth is the important period for rorlll lug a n>h>u>t „ stitution. ar;d nothing is so much to be dreaded as premature decay. What a gloomy object of contemplation to the suscep- tible mind is a youth, in full vigour of life, and appa- rently in perfect possession of his faculties, enduring all the complicated and dreadful consequences of this wretched infattiation! A mass of fatuity exciting the compassion of those who are unacquainted with the cause of his decay, by attracting only the contempt of those who, either from information or suspicion, impute the malady to its real source. To himself on the other hand, his situation is still more drpadful than to others: deprived of all internal powers of consolation the anchor of his hopes lost, the prospect of existence clouded a blank-a mere blot in the creation. There is no situation in life so full of embarrassment, as when we are obliged to reveal our moral indiscretions to others, and timidity and anxiety which so fiequently haunt the minds of those who are suffering from nervous and constitutional debility, arising from early and indis- criminate excesses, cannot be too earnestly deplored, for in those unhappy cases where melancholy distaste and incapacity for all pleasures, intense debility both mental and physical, and all the enervating imbecilities of old age, are its general attendants, the utmost endravours should be resorted to on the part of the sufferer to over- come this baneful destroyer of his health and happiness, in order to avoid the blank despair and certain misery which invariably accompany these dreadful debilities, when left to tho power of nature alone to restore, and which frequently huriies its victim to the grave, in the flower of youth. To a:l who are thus atUicted, Messrs. JO I)AN & Co., as regularly educated members of the medical profession, can with ti:e utmost confidence offer hope, energy, viqotir. ind perfect health, and from the peculiar nature of their practice, the most timid may feel encouragement in the opportunity thus afforded them. Then let it be conjured, that the victims of such (ieatily sclf-internperauee will no lrnger continue to dwell illth. purgatory of sllch sin, but by self-caatigation, throw oft the bitter iniaiu uion, and by a perseveiing endeavotit- regain the blessings of mankind- Let reason thei. resume her scat, and become a convert to chatty ant honour, for the debility of na'ure can be cO:J,¡,L'11'1y re- instated by the COKDIA L BALM OF RAK/isilil, f, its re-animating poweis almost excecd credibility, i s fine rich stimulating balsamic stomachic qualities, its purificalioa oS the blood t and above all, its compete invigoration of the nervous si stem, whereby the whole facuhies become restored to th"ir proper power and functions, and the fallen fabric of life is raised up to beauty, consistency, apd duratioz). upon the ruin of an emaciated and premüre decay, to sound and pristine health; this medicine is particularly leeommended to those whose constitutions have been impaired by such early imprudences, and has a surprising power in con- trolling disordered sensibility, aud inspiring new vigour 'nt» the languid po4er of life. JORDAN and Co., Surgeons, 3, College Green, (Three doors from St. Augustine's Church,) Bristol, and 20, Southampton Street, Bloomsbury Square, London. The following letter has just been received, and by request of the writer is now published. but it must b observed, no case is published except by express de- sire of the party.' To Messrs. Jordan and Co. Dear Sirs,-It has been my intention for a length of time, to address you ou a subject closely connected with your ceiebritv, but I must confess that a feeling of delicacy has hitherto witbeld me; for we are all unwiiliojr to expose our own errors. My cure. however, has been so singularly complete, that it would bean act. of .gross iujus ice to 3our character and skill, were I longer to withhold a case, as remarkable, perhaps, any on record. Born in a polished circle of society, I wai early sent to- a most respectable publicscminary, wherefor some years, all went oa will happiness and prosperity Unfortunately,, -however, a habit was set abroad amongst us, the pleasing allurements of which, I was, with many others, unable to resist—V cars rolled away ana left me an altered man —infirmities gathered around me, and at the a*e of 20 years, I was actually dying of dtcay-a gradual but certain decay. I wondered at the cause of all this pre- mature debility, nor did the truth ever flash across my mind, until an accidental perusal of a newspaper, where I saw an address of yours, which in-de tre fully sensible ot my miserable situation. Do not imagine. Sirs, that I had no advice-1 had the best, but, I confess it, I gave no Iiiiits, aud my meJical adviser never saw the true nature of my malady- Shame held my tongue, and inexperience clouded their faculties. The horrors of my situation increased with evey renewed day—with the cause of misery self entailed gnawing at my heart in my waking momen s; in seeking rest I only sought a change of torments.—the long hours of darkness were awful; those of sleep filled me wih racking horrors indescribablc-I longed for day-with day I was wearied —and I beheld the approach of night with abhorrence, Undei these circumstances of unqualified affliction, I journeyed upwards of seventy miles to have a consultation with you. I need not say how soon YOII were aware of my appalling situation, or the anxiety you manifested in accomplishing my relief-or of the confidence with which you sp ike of recovery. You directed me to that invaluable restorative, the Cordial Balm of Rakasiri; and by perseverance in following your directions, and with the blessing of Providence, a wonderful cure has been effec- ted, and I am now, in every sense of the word, become a new man! 1 transmit this account for your honour, and for the benefit of others, who may unfortunately be placed in a situation of similar wretchedness: you may omit my residence, bat if asked for, you are at liberty to give it. Remaining, Sirs, with every sentiment of regard, Your's truly, THOMAS BISHOP. With each box of Professor HOFFMAN'S BOTAN- ICAL PILLS, price 2s, 9d. and lis. each, warranted not to contain Copabia. Cubebs. or Mercury, will be given gratis, a Treatise on all disorders originating from im- purity of the blood, embracing Scurvy, Scrofula, Leprosy Lues Venerae &c. PROOF OF CURE WITHOUT SALIVATION. To Messrs. JORDAN. To demonstrate the feelings of mind, to evince the heartfelt gratitude I ought to express for my restoration to health and Friends, exceeds my utmost ability. To you, Sirs, my dearest relatives are indebted for my existence, when every hope of recovery was lost, and dire despair sat on the countenance of every person interested in my happiness. Humanity and commisera- tion induce me to request your publication of my situation." Through Sts imprudent connexion formccf when reason had di-serted its reins, I contracted a venereal taint, and in consequence made an application to a surgeon, went under a regular course of mercury, with the an- nexed horrors of fiequent salivations, without eradica- tion. The disorder was further augmented by a cold I caught during my above situation, which deprived me of the use of my limbs. By recommendation of a physician of eminence, I was removed to Cheltenham and liarri)%,gate, o try the virtue of the waters, but without relief. The oisorder bad notwithstanding the strictest caution, arrived to that height as to produce cancerous knobs on several parts of my body, wheu accidentally seeing an advertisement in the London papers, representing the wonderful properties of your astonishing medicines, 1 was induced to try their effects; 1, inconsequence, sent to your establishment in Londor), for some, which I to k as directed, and persevered in it for severai a-eeks, and to the astonishment of all who knew me, was restored to that degree of health as was almost increiliblc. Persons desirous of further informa- lion may he satisfied in every particular, by applying to 9, Great Surrey Stieet, Blackfriars, London. Messrs. "WHAT CONSERVATISM IS."
"WHAT CONSERVATISM IS." Coin-laws and sugar duties are the only apparent, not the real questions at issue. The real question is, whether Conservatism or Revolution should command the issues of political life, and rain down iuflucnee" oil the state of society. The question has been tried by tho recent elections, and the answer has been given, The spirit of the country is expressly Con- servative. But what is Consf,rv.-itistii ? Mistakes are made on this head which fatally vex every argument on political suhjeots. It is generally supposed that it is some extreme opinion none, however, but careless observers, to say nothing of shallow thinkers, can possibly be misled by this opinion. Conservatism, we repeat, is not, and never was, an extreme opinion. We recollect well the word being first used in the Cluarterly Review, in an nrticle bv our dear frienct and helper, the laureated Southey; and from that, timo dated a change in the aspect and relations of political events. Toryism, no doubt, was an extreme opinion — Whiggigm, no doubt, is aD extreme opinion -and tne latter is still A>rti»>r distant from the point or ToryislH than ever it was. It has been com- piled to make concessions to Radicalism, and even to Chartism, which separate it altogether by an immense distance from everything that holds as a principle the permanence of existing institutions, whatever reforms may be desired in the old, and whatever new establishments may be requisite. Now Conservatism occupies a mid-position between one extreme opinion and the other, and, in fact, has all along endeavouicd to reconcile both conceding to the. one that all abuses should be removed, but maintaining, with tho other, that the institutions, themselves should be held sacred. Take one hi- sLluce-thc great question of education. Whatever Toryism might have done Conservatism concedes the desirability of educating the niasses,-arid that, we belieVH. after a more generous and coriplete fashion tha 11 ever entered into the imagination of a Democrat but it maintains that the clergy of the Established Church have the right to the conduct and surveillance of the education proposed. The Whigs, however, say No," to this. We would," they exclaim," rather hive no education at all, than that the clergy should be entrusted with it. Our object is to supersede them by other instructors: and therefore the task of educating the people must be taken out of their hands and placed in others." Now, of course, this is a monstrous proposition, so long as an Established Church exists, and will never be granted by its clergy willingly, however they may be forced into com- pliance. From the moment of their being so forced. the death-knell of the establishment is sounded, and nothing will be left but decent v to bury it. So long, however, as the clergy of the Church of England maintain a superiority of intelligence, learning, and piety, such all event is impossible. A faction may bet, them but the heart of the peopte" will be with them. The only thing in which they are low deficient is in the important article of philosophy is distinguished from and superior to science; of this they may have little we wish they had more; btW. the leaders of dissent have none at ftll.—MontUj Magcuine, r
