WONDERFUL INSTINCT.—When the Queen left Bucking- ham Palace to take her first airing since the late interesting event, the horses (such is the force of habit!) instinctively went towards Drury-lane Tlieati-e.-Pttitch. CHINESE LITERATURE.—No profession is so laborious as that of literature in China. Among the Chinese, eminent learning is attained only by great application and perseve- rance. The first years at school are spent in committing the canonical books to memory another six years are required to supply the students with phiases of a good style: and an additional number of years, spent in incessant toil, are needed to ensure success. Long before the break of day, the Chinese student may be heard chaunting the sacred books, and till late at night the same task is continued. Of one man it is related, that he tied his hair to a beam of the house, in order to prevent his nodding to sleep. Another, more reso- lute, was in the habit of driving an awl into his thigh, when inclined to slumber. One poor lad suspended his book to the horns of the buffalo, that he might learn while following the plough and another bored a hole in the wainscot of his cottage, that he might steal a glimpse of his neighbour's light. Among the various establishments kept up by the king of the French for the improvement of the useful arts and sciences is a collection of silk-worms, at Neuilly, where, at this time, his majesty has a great quantity of their eggs in a state of incubation. Go THE WHOLE HOG.Tlie expression, I am told, is of Virginian origin. In that state, when a butcher kills a pig, it is usual to demand of each customer whether he will go the whole hog;" as, by such extensive traffic, a pur- chaser may supply his table at a lower price than is demanded of him whose imagination revels among prime pieces, to the exclusion of baser matter.- Utimiito?zly illett and Manners in America. A CHINESE SHIRT.—This is sometimes composed of numerous thin pieces of bamboo, about an inch in length, and strung together so as to form a kind of net, with large interstices or meshes. This singular shirt is worn next the skin, for the double purpose of coolness, and also to keep the other garments from coming in contact with the perspiration of the body. It has sleeves of the same manufacture, and was, indeed, a complete shirt, except the omission of the collar and buttons. An Irishman, some time since, found a sovereign in the street, which proved to be light, and he could only obtain 19s. for it. Soon after, chance threw another in his way, but Pat exclaimed, By the powers, I'll have nothing to do with you, for I lost a shilling by the last one I found." "Wipw- POWER OF THE VOICE OVER CHILDREN.—It is usual to attempt the management of children either -by corporal punishment, or by rewards addressed to the senses, or by words alone. There is one other means of government, the power and importance of which are seldom regarded I refer to the human voice. A blow may be inflicted on a child, accompanied by words so uttered as to counteract entirely its intended effect; or the parent may use language in the cor- rection of the child, not objectionable in itself, yet spoken in a tone which more than defeats its influence. Let any one endeavour to recall the image of a fond mother, long since at rest in heaven. Her sweet smile and ever clear countenance are brought vividly to recollection and so also is her voice and blessed is that parent who is endowed with a pleasing utterance. What is it that lulls the infant to repose 1 It is no array of mere words. There is no charm to the untaught one in letters, syllables, and sentences. It is the sound which strikes its little ear that soothes and composes it to sleep. A few notes, however unskilfully arranged, if uttered in a soft tone, are found to possess a magic influence. Think we that this influence is confined to the cradle 1 No, it is diffused over every age, and ceases not while the child remains under the parental roof. Is the boy growing rude in manner and boisterous in speech ] I know of no instru- ment so sure to control these tendencies as the gentle tones of a mother. She who speaks to her son harshly does but give to his conduct the sanction of her own example. She pours oil on the already raging flame. In the pressure of duty, we are liable to utter ourselves hastily to our children. Perhaps a threat is expressed in a loud and irritating tone; instead of allaying the passions of the child, it serves directly to increase them. Every fretful expression awakens in him the same spirit which produced it. So does a pleasant voice call up agreeable feelings. Whatever disposition, therefore, we would encourage in a child, the same we should manifest in the tone in which we address Iiim.-C/ttirch ofeiiglaiad Magazine. ARAB HORsEs.-In Arabia the horse is treated with the greatest gentleness and affection; he dwells in the same tent with his master and family mare and foal associate with his wife and children in indiscriminate friendship their bed is the same, and their bodies not unfrcquently serve mutually as pillows. It is by gentleness and friendship that all Arab subdues his horse he makes it his companion, not his 3lave, and whipping is to his eyes the height of brutality the good results of such a mode of treatment are evident. If the Arab falls, although at full speed, the courser will stop, turn, and wait until remounted and if the master be unhorsed by violence, the sagacious and faithful creature will rush upon the assailants, and, if unable to put them to flight, will die in his defence. It his merely this friendly intercourse, this kind treatment, that renders the Arabian horse what he is-the most faithful, docile, and affectionate in the world. The Arabians will not part with their best bred horses, nor even with inferior mares. They do not absolutely refuse to sell, but treat such a request as madness, and ask such prices as speedily show their determination while even should any sum, however large, be offered, they will still shirk the unwelcome bargain. This fool wants to buy my Kohlani from under me" cried an Arab, in reply to an importunate would-be purchaser of a thorough-bred mare; "why, she saved my life in a chase of fourscore miles, without once stopping! Content yourself with a Guidschi or an Attiki!"—of which inferior kinds the price is about four hundred pounds for the former, and two hun- dred for the latter.—The French Consul at Said once offered to purchase a mare from a poor Arab of the desert for Louis XIV. The wanderer hesitated for a long time but at length, pressed by poverty, consented to part with her for a very large sum. The Consul having obtained permission from France to comply with his demand, sent for the Arab, to receive the animal and pay for her. The man arrived with his magnificent courser, and presented a striking con- trast to his superb mare, being covered with nought but a squalid rag. Dismounting, he stood, and leaning upon his steed, gazed vacantly for an instant upon the tendered gold then turning his eyes towards his beloved mare, he exclaimed, while the salt tears trickled down his cheeks, and deep sighs rent his bosom-" To whom is it I am going to yield thee up To Europeans, who will tie thee close, who will beat thee. who will render thee miserable! Return with me. my beauty! my jewel and rejoice the hearts of my child- ren And as he pronounced these words, the son of the wilds sprang on the back of his desert-boru steed, and was out of sight in a moment.- THE RACE FOR THE DERBY.—Precisely at 3 o'clock, during a smart shower, the horses reached the post in a line, and the word being given, got off excellently. Gaper took the lead at a strong pace, followed closely by Khorassan, Cotherstone and Gorhambury next, and well up with them Sirikol, Newcourt, A British Yeoman, Elixir, and two or three others; in the rear were Murton Lordship and High- lander, and there they remained to the cud of the chapter. The leading horses maintained their positions till near the turn, where, so great had been the pace, we looked in vain for Aristides, Newcourt, and Elixir—they had succumbed, and the second rank was composed of Chotorniau, Fakeaway, and A British Yeoman, but neither with any chance. Gaper continued the lead a few strides over the" road, and then, quite beaten, fell behind with Khorassan; Cotherstone im- mediately took up the running, followed by Gorhambury, Sirikol third, and in this order the race finished, Cotherstone increasing his lead from the stand, and winning in a com- mon canter by two lengths; Gorhambury was three lengths before Sirikol, who beat Gaper about a length, the letter having a similar advantage over Khorassan. Three or four lengths behind were Fakeaway, Chotornian, and A British Yeoman, each claiming to be sixth. We cannot decide the point, nor can we pretend to say in what rotation the others ran home. The pace from first to last was tremendous. Value of the stakes £ 4,225. Mr. Bowes and his party are, in figures, very large winners; but there is a settling day to come, and from what we have seen and heard, that will awfully reduce the amount. The Duke of Beaufort's silver cups, annually awarded by his grace for the best foxhounds returned from his estates in Monmouthshire, have been given to Mr. Gardiner, of Chep- stow, and Mr. tuff, of Trelleck. t

RELATIVE STATE OF THE CHURCH AND DISSENT. (From a Correspondent. It will have been seen by our Parliamentary report of Tuesday last that Sir James Graham has again displayed symptoms of vacillation with respect to the educational clauses of the Factory Bill. He requested time until to-day, and in the mean time ex- pressed his inability to make any further arrangement with respect to the measure, or "to state positively the course which the Government intend to pursue." Coincident with this statement, we have seen an announcement in the Iles- leyan Chroniclc to the effect that Sir James Graham is at this moment engaged with some of the leading members of the United Wesleyan Committee, with a view to make the educational clauses of the Factory Bill satisfactory to them." We earnestly hope that Government will not pursue any such imbecile course as seems to be implied in these manoeuvres. The alterations already made in the bill are for the worse, and further concessions to the Wesleyan objectors will, probably, deprive it of all the merit it ever possessed. Mean- while we shall use the short breathing space now remaining to urge additional reasons for adhering strictly to the principles of a Church Education, In the recent debate upon this subject, it was assumed by Mr. Roebuck and his supporters, that the primary object of the State in supporting a system of public education ought to be-to prepare men for the discharge of their duties as members of society. To this position we assent so far, that we confess the sole authority and the sole capacity for teaching men their religious duties as such, to reside with the Church; and when the State takes upon it to supersede the Church in teaching religion, we shall be among the first to protest against so unnecessary, impolitic, and mischievous a departure from the province of civil government. But it is perfectly consistent with the truth of this view to maintain, that no education can be perfectly such, of which religion is not both a part and the controlling principle ;-that the very notion of duty cannot be separated from religion by those who believe any existing religion to be true and that to inculcate upon the young the notion that their social and political duties rest on any sufficient grounds independently of religion, is to endanger the whole fabric of moral and civil society. The only consequences into which we are led by this view, when united to the other, are-first, that-for the State to attempt education without the aid of the Church is useless, or worse and, secondly, that the Church cannot co-operate with the State in any system of education in which she is not left free to exercise, without the interference of any secular authority, her proper office. To attempt to cut down and circumscribe the religious instruction which the Church shall give, in order to flatter those who differ from her, is manifestly either to assume for the State the office of a theological judge, or, voluntarily, to relinquish, to a certain extent, the principle of uniting religion with secular teaching. The importance to the State of education, conducted by the Church, upon the principles of the Church, is apparent HUH'" ..u.J' The Church is the main element of stability in the consti- tution of the country; she is always on the side of law, while her enemies of every kind, whether Dissenting, Homish, or Intidel, have all their alliances with the move- ments which tend to disorganise society. It is of no use, for this purpose, to make distinctions between the more or less virulent kinds of Dissent-to attempt to make one law for the Independents, and another for the Wesleyans. There is all intrinsic and irreconcilable opposition between the Church and separatism of every kind. The moral influence of separatism, as such, is of a contrary tendency to the moral influence of the Church. Nothing would be a more fatal error than to disarm the Church and strengthen the opposite principles, under the idea of conciliating only one class, and that the most respectable of Dissenters. The political value of a Church education, which it is thus attempted to enfeeble and undermine, was tested in a pe- culiar manner in the manufacturing districts during the outbreak of last year. Nothing could be more marked than the evidence then given of the success of the National School system, in making good citizens and good subjects. It was such, that, in many places, the Church was familiarly identified by the rioters with the resistance offered them. Here come the Churchmen," was a common cry when the maintainers of order made their appearance. The facts of this nature, stated in the late report of the National Society, are of singular interest and importance. With a view to ascertain, at such a crisis, how far the influence of the Church and Church Schools had been beneficially exerted in support of law and order, an inquiry was set on foot by means of a circular. The number of answers received was about 150, all from different writers, and all tending to the same conclusion, namely—that the effect of education, whether in Sunday or daily schools, was salutary in propor- tion to its completeness; and that wherever the means of Church instruction was best provided, there the elforts of the disaffected were least successful. That in whatever districts Church principles predominated, no outbreak took place, however grievous the privations of the people, except in cases where the rightly-disposed inhabitants were overpow- ered by agitators from a distance." We select a few of the details, from which our readers may be enabled to judge of the character of the whole report. The incumbent of the district where the disturbances originated declared, that as far as his observation extended, not one Churchman had taken part in the turn out, or had, at any time, been concerned in any unlawful proceedings in the neighbourhood." "A magistrate of Lancaster stated, that, during the riots, he called a public meeting, to consider the best plan for preserving the public peace. That the Church people uni- versally attended it, and cheerfully enrolled themselves as special constables, as also did the teachers of the Church Sunday Schools to a man." Another communication states, that—" The rioters in the late outbreak were not Churchmen, as might be proved by an inquiry through the chaplains of the county gaols. That those trained up in Church schools, by their adherence to their country's laws and institutions, stopped the torrents of disorder. That none of those belonging to the National School joined in, or approved of, the late agitation, although nearly all of them worked in factories, and were suffering many privations. That among the youthful mob, not one pupil out of twelve hundred, belonging to the National Schools will be discovered, although the attention of the teachers had been specially directed to the subject." Now, there are three classes of persons with whom we have to deal. One class (Mr. Roebuck and his friends) say that the State ought not to concern itself about theological truth another (the class of more violent Dissenters) declare that the State ought to respect their theological jealousy of the Church while the third (the Wesleyans) do not openly profess to have any theological jealousy of the Church at all. All think public education desirable—all agree in regard- ing it as the object of public education, that the pupil may acquire a correct knowledge of their duties, and the habits necessary to insure their performance. To all these we say, look at the facts which we have quoted from the report of the National Society. Deny, if you can, that the system of instruction which has borne these facts does give that knowledge and form those habits for which the State is called to provide, and show us, if you can, that any other system of instruction answers that pur- pose in the same, or in an equal degree. If the one fact cannot be denied, or the other shown, surely the first class of our opponents, with their views of theology, cannot object, though the system which succeeds so well should, at the same time, produce an attachment to some particular re- ligious creed. As long as no compulsion is used to force a creed upon any man, it cannot be reasonable for those who think one creed as good as another to intercept from the State a great political and social benefit, merely because it employs among its instruments that creed which appears to be of the greatest political utility. And if the first class (Messrs. Roebuck and Co.) cannot object, on their own principles, to a proper Church education, much less can the third class (the Weslcyans), who both approve of the princi- ple of uniting religious with secular instruction, and affect even to decline the name of Dissenters, avowing that they have no important doctrinal differences from the Church. As for the intermediate class, we cannot wonder that those who are themselves the enemies of order should be unwilling to strengthen a body which has ever counteracted their fac- tious proceedings. But that is the very reason why the State should not listeii to their objections.

COTHERSTONE.- This celebrated horse, the winner of the Riddlesworth, Column, and 2.000 Guinea Stakes, at New- market, this year, and the Derby, at Epsom, is named after Mr. Bowes's extensive manor of Cotherstone. The pleasant village of Cothcrstone stands at the confluence of the Balder and the river Tees, about four miles above Barnard Castle, and it is famous for a petrifying drop-well, close by the margin of the former stream, and for its cheeses," which are well known throughout the kingdom. Cotherstone is described as a good bright bay, rather over fifteen hands two inches high, y ith black legs and one white heel behind head rather plain and large, good deep shoulders well thrown back very deep in the girth, round body, splendid quarters, well let down, and looking from behind him, very wide hips showing great power carries his tail a little way from his quarters good strong arms, thighs, and hocks, short from the hock to the ground very sound clean legs and feet; has a fine temper, good hardy constitution, altogether presents the appearance ot a powerful racing-like na". Cotherstone was got by iouehstone (who, with his brother, Launcelot, won the St.Leger in the years 1834 and 1810,) out of Emma (the dam of Mundig, winner of the Derby in 135;) gran ■ dam, Gibside Fairy (the grandam of Euclid, Theon, Extem- pore, &c.,) by lierines great grandam Vicissitude, by Tipator, &c. GOOD NEWS FOR HAMPERED WIDOAVS.-Sir J. K. Bruce gave judgment in the Yice Chancellor's Court, last week, on a point respecting wills. A testator, in 1834, made a will by which he gave a share of his estate to his daughter and her issue but by a codicil added in 1836, he provided that this property should pass over to other persons if his daughter should ever marry. The daughter did marry, and the other persons stepped forward to claim the money. The judge said, that all such restraints upon i-narriage were void by the English laiv and the declaration of the court was, that the lady should keep the money. THE ROYAL CHRISTENING. The ceremony of the baptism of Her Royal Highness the Infant Princess, second daughter of Her Majesty aud Prince Albert, took place on Friday last, the 2nd inst., in the Chapel Royal, Buckingham Palace. The whole of the Royal household were in State. A guard of honour of the Grenadier Guards, with the band of that regiment, was on duty on the Palace lawn, and received the Royal Family with the usual military honours. The noble and Illustrious Visiters invited to the solemnity began to arrive at Buckingham Palace at half-past 11 o'clock. The French Ambassador, the Hanoverian, Belgian, and Wurtemberg Ministers appeared in their respective diplo- matic uniforms. The Lord Steward, the Lord Chamberlain, and the officers of their respective departments, appeared in the full-dress household costume. The Master of the Horse, the Clerk Marshal, and the Equerries in waiting, wore their splendid state uniforms. Garter King of Arms and the Heralds present at the cere- mony were habited in their magniticent tabards, and wore their collars ofS.S. The Lord Chancellor arrived, attended by his Purse Bearer and full suite. His Lordship appeared ip his gold state robe. Her Majesty the Qneen Dowager arrived in State, escorted by a party of Life Guards. His Royal Highness Prince Albert wore his unifor m as Field Marshal, with the Collars and Stars of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, of the Most Ancient Order of the This- tle, and of the Most Hon. Military Order of the Bath. The altar of the Chapel was decorated with some very fine specimens of gold Communion plate, and vas covered with crimson velvet, richly trimmed and ornamented with deep gold lace. The font of silver gilt was the same that was used at the christening of Her Royal Highness the Pincess Royal. It was placed on a pedestal in front of the altar and was filled with water brought from the river Jordan. A very large painting was hung at the back of the altar. Her Majesty the Queen, Prince Albert, the Queen Dowager, and other Royal personages, having taken their seats, the great Officers of the Household, the Groom of the Stole to His Royal Highness Prince Albert, with the Vice- Chamberlain, and the Lord and Groom in Waiting to His Royal Highness Prince Albert, took their places near the Queen and His Royal Highness. The Treasurer and the Comptroller of the Household took their places behind the Sponsors. Others of the Household with the attendants forming the suites of the Members of the Royal Family and Illustrious Visiters, arranged themselves on either side of the Chapel A Chorale was then performed, followed by a Hymn "I will Give Tiiatikg.Palestriiia. At the conclusion of the Hymn, Her Royal Highness the Infant Princess was conducted by the Lord Chamberlain, and the Groom of the Stole to His Royal Highness Prince Albert, into the Chapel; Her Royal Highness being carried by the Head nurse, and attended by the Dowager Lady Lyttelton. The dress of Her Royal Highness the Infant Princess was a robe of Honiton lace over white silk made at Spitalfields, and cap to correspond; the whole dress of British ma- nufacture. His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury, standing in front of the Altar, commenced the Baptismal Service, the Archbishop of York and the Bishop of London standing on either side of the Altar, the Bishop of Norwich being near the former Prelate; the Sponsors, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duchess of Kent, the Princess Sophia Matilda, and the Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenbyrgh Strelitz, standing near the font on the north side, opposite to Her Majesty and Prince Albert. Their Royal Highnesses made the customary responses. I When the Archbishop came to that part of the service for naming the Princess, the Princess Sophia Matilda and the Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburgh Strelitz named Her Royal Highness—"Alice Maud Mary." The Baptismal Service was concluded, and Her Royal Highness the Princess Alice was re-conducted from the Chapel. The Hallelujah Chorus from the "Mount of Olives," (Beethoven,) was then performed with admirable effect. Her Majesty and Prince Albert, the Queen Dowager, the Royal Sponsors, and the other Illustrious Visiters left the Chapel and returned to the Queen's Apartments. The Queen and Royal Family afterwards passed up the Grand Staircase to the Throne Room. The rest of the company shortly followed. At "J o'clock the whole of the Illustrious Party enterejl the Picture Gallery, where a grand Collation was given in honour of the event. This magnificent apartment contained a long table placed in the middle of the gallery, and extending nearly its entire length. This table exhibited a great num- ber of the finest centre pieces of gold plate in the Royal col- lection. At each end of the table were sideboards of gold plate enclosed in pilasters of white and gold, supporting an architrave, the mouldings carved and gilt. The" Shield of Achilles" was the principal ornament of one sideboard, and a large shield representing Bacchus and Ariadnc" formed the corresponding ornament of the op- posite sideboard. Both were filled with shields, salvers sconces, vases, tankards, and cups, selected from the nu- merous articles in the Royal Treasury. Several of the articles displayed on the occasion, such as the antique urn of the Spanish Armada, are objects of historical interest, and many pieces were remarkable for the beauty and excellence of their designs and workmanship, and almost all the cups are beautifully and elaborately carved and enriched. The articles were most tastefully grouped, and were relieved by a back ground of crimson.

THE ROYAL ACADEMY,—NO. IT. The works of imagination in the present exhibition are few and far between, but, nevertheless, for the paucity in numbers, are possessed of the greatest possible degrees of merit or demerit. In short, they extend in these particu- lars, from the sublime and beautiful to the absurd and ri- diculous. A statue in marble of Psyche, by E. H. Bailey, R.A., stands first in numerical order, and is in every respect worthy so to be placed; for the idea is most chastely con- ceived, nor is the execution less delicately finished. Thus the effect is an exquisite personification of love and purity blended into each other, without destroying either as a whole. The figure may not indeed possess all those cor- poreal charms which the eye of a voluptuary might look for in a naked female, yet, in the opinion of all those who are gifted with that very rare attribute, delicacy of taste, this very ciicumstance will constitute its greatest attrac- tion: for who, that has eyes to see, heart to feel, or taste to appreciate, dare to say that it is not a soul-winning model of maidenly beauty, as well as truly emblematical of her, Who courted Cupid from the skies To bask in love's and Psyche's eyes." Before we dismiss this subject, it may not be either irre- levant or uninstructive to our readers to observe, that the total absence of sensuality lorms the leading distinction between similar works by Canova and Baily. The former always represents his figure in such positions or with such expressions, which, though they do not in themselves form any approach to wantonness, are, never- theless, imbued with a species of meretriciousness, which gives the beholder an idea of indelicacy in the exhibition whereas those by Baily. "Tho* naked as she Who rose from the sea," never seem to assume any appearance of concealment, and thus never awaken an idea that the laws of modesty or the rules of propriety, are either outraged or infringed by the exposition. To make myself more particularly understood, Baily's Psyche seems the incarnation of the spirit within, which scorns to be confined, and Canova's Venus the Ex- posure of bodily voluptuousness, which ought to be con- cealed. The former rivets the mind, and the latter ex- cites the passions. At the one, some modest men would feel ashamed of being seen steadfastly looking, at the other the most unsullied maiden might gaze without a blush. But wide as the difference between these two celebrated artists is, the subjects of the one are equally as inoffensive as those of the other, and the truth is, that the dissimi- larity in the effect produced depends entirely on one par- ticular, viz., the degree of purity in taste, which is exer- cised in the treatment of the work selected. Hence he who possesses: this qualification in the highest degree, is ul- timately sure to obtain the most conspicuous pedestal in the temple of fame. Paul and Virginia, by W. C. Marshall, is a sweet idea tastefully executed. The next in order by the book is a marble statue of Ophe- lia, from Shakspeare, by J. G. Lough, which is without any exception in this department the very worst work in the room, yet this gentleman possesses talent of a very high order, for the group of Bacchanalians revelling, would if it had been as well carried out as it is beautifully con- ceived, have left nothing to have been desired. A Sleeping Falconer, by J. E. Carew, is deserving of par- ticular attention, not for the figure, which has nothing above inedioricity to recommend it, but on account of the dead heron which lies dead on the ground beneath the wearied sportsman, for the latter is, unquestionably, the most wonderful production in its kind, both in conception and finish, which has ever been executed in marble by ancient or modern artists; but to be rightly appreciated it must be seen. Arethusa, by F. Thrupp, is not without merit, though that merit is not of the highest order. ° Cupid with the attributes of Mars. by E. G. Papworth and which is described in the catalogue as au unfinished sketch, would have been, if the intention had been carried out, one of the prettiest things in the room. It is really a pity that a gentleman who could imagine so well had either so little leisure or so much indolence, that he conld not afford time to complete a work so nobly begun. On Tuesday se'nnight the police received information that on the 22nd ult. the throne-room in the palace of Holyrood, Edinburgh, was entered by thieves, and a variety of articles stolen therefrom, the property of the managers of the Exche- quer of Scotland. The property stolen consists of six yards and a half of rich silver lace (gilt), 38 silver tassels, and 16 or 18 imitation pearls. THE DgVII. AND DR. FAUSTUS.—The tradition of the Devil and Dr. Faustus is said to have been derived from the odd circumstances under which the Bibles of the first printer, Fust, appeared to the world but if Dr. Faustus, and Fust the printer, are two different persons, the tradition becomes suspicious, though in some respects it has a foundation in truth. When Fust had discovered this new art, and printed off a considerable number of copies of the Bible, to imitate those which were commonly sold as MSS., he undertook the sale of them at Paris. It was his interest to conceal this dis- covery, and to pass off his printed copies for MSS. But, enabled to sell his Bible at sixty crowns, while the other scribes demanded five hundred, this raised universal astonish- ment, and still more when he produced copies as fast as they were wanted, and even lowered his price. The uniformity of the copies increased the wonder. Informations were given to the magistrates against him as a magician and on searching his lodgings a great number of copies were found. The red ink (and Fust's red ink is peculiarly brilliant) which embellished his copies was said to be his blood and it was solemnly adjudged that he was in league with the Devil. Fust was at length obliged, in order to save himself from a bonfire, to reveal his art to the parliament of Paris, which discharged him from all prosecution in consideration of this useful invention. For several days the Artesian well of Grenelle has thrown up small blaek fishes, which have no apparent eyes. This phenomenon was observed last year at the same period. TiiE WAR IN CHINA.—A parliamentary return of the sums paid on account of the war in China, so far as they can be made out, and of the sums received or due from China under the late Treaty of Peace or otherwise, has just been published, from which it appears that the total expenditure, including £1,ODû,41G by estimate for 1842-3, is E4,215,413, and the actual receipts t2,537,504, whereof £ 1,237,504 is Canton Ransom; and 1:1,300,000 the first instalment paid under the treaty with China. The amount due from China is stated thus:-Tii June, 1843, 3,000,000 dots.; January, 1844, 3,000,000 dol,. June, 1845, 2,500,000 dols.; June, 1845, 2,000,000 dols January, 1846, 2,000,000 dols.; total 15,000,000 dols.; equal, at 4s. 4d. each, to £ 3,250,000. This added to the amount received, makes the aggregate £ 5,787,504, leaving a balance over the expenditure of £ 1,572,091. There are, however, in addition, the following claims to be provided for: Ist Opium claims, 6,000,000 dols. 2nd. Hong merchants' debts, estimated at 3,000,000 dols. 3rd. Such sums as may be due to the East India Company for expences connected with the war, not yet brought to account, and for which no estimate can now be formed. SINGULAR PHENOMENON.— A short time since a very remarkable appearance of the electric fluid took place at Mr. Hurst's mill, Eastbourne. The attendants, warned by the appearance of the sky of an approaching storm, hastened to take in the sails. Before, however, this work was com- pleted, the wind blew violently, with heavy showers of sleet, and on a sudden the sweeps of the mill became brilliantly illuminated with a blue lambent fire, which continued flit- ting about the frame-work for nearly 10 minutes, at the end of which it gradually disappeared. Doubtlessly the pheno- menon was produced by a quantity of the electric fluid, which settled on the mill; and there being no conductor to carry it away, it remained till it was absorbed by the at- mosphare. EXPLOSION OF A SHIP LADEN WITH AMMUNITION.— Shortly before 11 o'clock on Friday morning the town of Southampton was thrown into great consternation by the re- port of the Tartar brig in the docks being on fire, and that she had, in addition to a great quantity of ammunition, two tons of gunpowder on board. As soon as it was known that he vessel was on fire she was deserted, as was also the John King, lying near her. Hundreds of people left the town, and many of the shops were shut lip. The Sappers and Miners forming the surveying corps stationed at this place were requested to attend to fire into her, so that she might be sunk, and a party of about 30, under the command of Lieutenant Jolland, were speedily on the spot, a 24-pounder 1. d 19 1 1. (0 r- ueuig dragged trom ine pnuiorm tor use. (J p to this time the flames had just begun to rise above the deck, and several shots were well fired between the wind and water. The preparation for firing occupied some time, the dock ground being very unfavourable, and by the time that some eight or nine shots told, the flames had extended fore and aft, and the rockets and loaded shells flew about and exploded in every direction. Of course the Sappers were called off, and the immediate neighbourhood abandoned. The sight at this time was grand and imposing, vast numbers of the rockets going up simultaneously, and many of the shells exploding in the air. Some pieces of the iron fell a third of a mile from the vessel. About I o'clock the mainmast went bv the board, dragging with it the foremast, but the flames raged furiously beiow, at no great height, however, from a strong wind blowing at the time; about 2 o'clock a further and more powerful series of discharges and explosions took place, and at 20 minutes to 3 she sank in deep water. LIQUID MANURE.—The employment of liquid manure (though little at present in England) is very extensive on the Continent; the Swiss farmers call it guile in France it is denominated ZiLier and by the Germans mistwasser. They prepare it throughout many of the German States, and in the Netherlands, by sweeping the excrements of their stall- fed cattle into underground reservoirs, mixing with it four or five times its bulk of water, according to the richness of the dung five rbservoirs are generally employed, of such a size that they each take a week to fill, and thus each has four weeks allowed to ferment before the mass, which in this time becomes of an uniform consistence, is removed hy means of a portable pump, in water carts, or large open vessels. A similar plan is adopted in the north of Italy, and from time out of mind has been practised by the Chinese. In that empire, however, the cultivators chiefly employ night soil, which is made into cakes for this purpose with lime or clay, in all their large cities, to prepare their liquid manure. DREADFUL RAILWAY ACCIDENT. A fatal accident oc- curred oil Thursday evening on the Arbroath Forfar Railway, near Forfar. A carter from Glammis, named Bunch, had, it appears, delivered a load of wood at the depot adjoining to the Red-road, within a short distance of the railway terminus, and was about to return, when the up-train whistle sounded; but in place of stopping, he urged and hurried on his horse, putting it into a trot, with the view, it is supposed, of getting across the railway before the train. He was called to repeatedly by a person who saw the danger he was running into, but the warning was unheeded. The engine came up just as the horse was in the middle of the railway, or nearly so, with the man at the horse's head, when dreadful to relate, both were killed on the spot. The cart was dashed to pieces, but no damage was done to the train.—Dundee Warder. SUPPOSED MURDER OF A SON BY HIS FATHER.—Last week the neighbourhood of Wymesvvokl was in a state of considerable excitement, caused by the discovery of the body of a gentleman named Isaac Kettleband, of Wysall, in a pond on the farm of Mr. Hebb, m the parish of Hegworth. Cir- cumstances subsequently transpired which led to tho nppre- hension of the father of the deceased, on suspicion of having committed the murder. On Wednesday and Thursday last an inquest was held before Mr. Swan, coroner, when it ap- peared that the deceased was last seen alive with his father near the pond in question on the 12th instant. Mr. Brown, of Wymeswole, surgeon, was of opinion that the neck of the unfortunate youth had first been broken and that his body was afterwards thrown into the pond The inquest was adjourned to the 30th instant, and the father of the de- ceased was committed to Nottingham Gaol to await the result, i .(

Had the electors of Merthyr and Dowlais been habituated to scenes of moral depravity, or skilled in threading the devious paths of political treachery they may have expectell, or at least been better prepared, to (ind your pledge as the repre- sentative ot their wants broken, and their opinions unex- pressed. But proverbial for the singleness of their purposes, and the simplicity of their hearts, honour, justice, and pity, should lirve induced you to treat them with integrity, when they reposed in you a confidence so unlimited. Having once been deceived, tliev will be loath to intrust you again with their confidence, though interest may incline ilir iu to support you by their votes. Is net this a rotten borough ? Accustomed to think well of all men, in whatever the sphere they moved, your supporters were impressed with the con- viction, that your elevation to knighthood, «as a tu.u k ol no ordinary merit;—a deserved tribute to superior worth. Under this generous impression of the unsullied character oi national honours they may for years longer have remained, had you not taken eilective measures, to expose the fallacy ot their expectations, and to show, that the exalted virtue to which they paid homage so sincere, was a phantom of their own creation; unsubstantial as a shadow and equally un- founded. Does the title Baronet" with which you have been invested, necessarily imply that fcfie hearer has divested himself of all the feeling of humanity, and been released from all moral and civil obligations? Was the condition upon which you received it from Lord John Russell, that you should countenance the follies as well as the chance wisdom of that little-minded statesman that you should not support any measures to which he was opposed, how ever accordant with your own views and agreable to the wishes; of your constitu- ents? They have not it is true spirit enough openly to express their sentiments, but though they belie their real feelings, you are not beheld with those of admiration. The sincere homage of a feeling heart is worth more than the ap- plause of a world of sycophants. Probably not from men of integrity we are (satisfied to receive their bare word, without requiring in addition the sanctity of an oiitli considering that he who would break through a moral obligation, incurred between him and other men, would not be I ss scrupulous in cancelling an engagement to his God. Lavyets generally the last people in the world to sanction improvement, have discarded their old forms, and now admit, that a simple de- claration carries with it as much importance as an oath. Here is no avenue for escape. After having been equally regardless of pledges given to ten thousand, as to two men, you must be prepared to meet the feeling which it has called forth. t:! Why is it that you have never voted upon any great ques- tion '? Is it want of courage or of intelligence? If a man is afraid to express liii opinions or render the assi tance of his vote, he has not the courage, which in a representative ill required, and would wisely stay at home. If, oil the contrary, a great question is too gigantic to be adequately reflected upon lhe mental retina, or it its importance is not sufficiently appreciated, then it is evident that that inau is not only unfit to become the representative of the opinions and necessities of 35,000 people, but his own. The time is come when we want bold men and true, and we must have them. You are altio a friend to the education ot the working classes have given prizes for competition at the Abergavenny periodical assemblages; have contributed towards the main- tenance of a National School at Dowlais; anil have volun- teered your services to prevent the Dissenters' petition against the Factory Bill. All this you are thought and said to have done, but by one act of either constitutional weakness or political treachery, you have undone that and more. The friend and supporter of the working classes has forc,hly demonstrated, that the first lesson in national education, is to belie the most solemn declarations, break the most important pledges, and declare independence of every obligation which governs and sustains society. EXTRAORDINARY ROBBERY.—Considerable excitement has prevailed at Market IIarborough for some days past in con- sequence of a report of several lead coffins having been stolen from the vaults in St. Mary's Church. An investigation was immediately set on foot by the churchwardens, and from the information obtained, several persons were taken into custody on suspicion of being concerned in the robbery, who on Saturday last underwent a long and searching examination before Mr. W. De Capel Brooke, when sDtne of them were discharged and others remanded until Monday, on which four of them, named George Cooke (the foieman of the gss works,)Thomas Garlic William Garlic and AVilliam Bassett were fully committed for trial at the Leicester assizes. It appears from the evidence adduced that the old church of St. Mary-in-Ardeu (which is now only used for the purpose of funerals, and is situated about a quarter of a mile on the eastern side of Harbrough) was undergoing repair, the floor being in a very dilapidated and utieven state, and the pri- soners Bassett and Thomas Garlic were employed in relaying the same. In consequence of information received from a person named Cotton, to whom a quantity of lead had been offered for sale under suspicious circumstances, added to the fact of one of the prisoners having been seen to put some cakes of lead into a common stage wagon consigned for x Birmingham the vaults beneath the church were examined, when it appeared that one belonging to the Farrcr family had been completely gutted, two or three coffins which had lain there a great number of years having been abstracted and carried off and the outer shells broken into innumerable fragments and in another vault, belonging to the Harpur family, the lid of a lead coffin had been cut off and taken away, and a hole cut in the inner shell, from which such an offensive effluvium arose as doubtless saved the remainder of the coffin in fact, it has been since ascertained that one of the prisoners was taken ill in the night the robbery was sup- posed to have been committed, and obliged to have recource to medicine to counteract the effects of the stench. There is every reason to believe that had not the matter been found out at this time, many other coffins in the burial-ground would have shared a similar fate, as one of the prisoners is stated to have said to the party to whom the lead was dis- posed of that he could supply him with two or three tons more if required. Great praise is due to the churchwardens and police-officers for their indefatigable exertions in bringing this matter to light, and we trust, should the parties accused be found guilty, that they will be visited with a degree of punishment commensurate with the enormity of the offence, as scarcely any punishment can be too severe for characters so depraved and hardened who dared to violate the sanctity of consecrated ground, and commit to the flames the ashes of the dead.—Northampton Hcarld. THE SCOTCH CIIUR ;H.—The number of clergymen who have seceded from the Church of Scotland is now 450; and there cannot be a question that by the middle of the week the number will be close on 500. This is nearly the half of the entire clergy, the number being under 1,200. Anion" the leaders will be found the name of almost every minister distinguished for talent, moral worth, or weight of character. THE REPEAL ALARM. —A considerable decline has taken place in the English securities, which must be attributed solely to the vague fear which is entertained as to the issue of the present state of affairs in Ireland. The facts that were brought forward in the debate tend to increase the general uneasiness, and some arc of opinion that in addition to the "Registration of Arms Bill," a "Coercion Bill" will be found necessary. The more timid capitalists are sellin" under the influence of the alarm, but it must not be sup- posed that the measures ot the Government are regarded with displeasure. On the contrary, in such a state oHhin^s it is felt that security can alone lie in the adoption of the bill now before the Legislature. — Times. THREE SUICIDES BY THE WIVES OF ONE HUSBAND. On Thursday Mr. Baker held an inquest at the Seymour Arms, Seymour-place, Bryanston-square, on the body of Mary Salmon, aged 44. Evidence was given to prove that she had separated from her husband, had since lived a dissi- pated life, and that she had committed suicide by taking laudanum. Verdict-" Temporary insanity." SUPERSTITION.—A frightful death occurred at Hanwell Lunatic Asylum on Sunday. Miss Jane Sarah Collins, whose mind had been wandering oil religious subjects, came to visit her brother-in-law, Dr. Conolly, on Saturday. Next morning, it being daylight, he was awakened by her comino- into the room and asking for a light, as she thought it ne- cessary to burn herself; and she added, that she had been thinking of throwing herself out of the window. Seeing him make a motion to get out of bed, she ran up stairs. He slipped on a dressing-gown and followed her, and 011 reaching her room, found her in the act of springing out of the win- dow. lie caught her by the wrist, held her as she hung for twenty minutes, screaming for help; but no one came to him, and he was obliged to let her fall a height of fifty feet. She never moved again. She had a notion that if she had destroyed herself 011 Palm Sunday she would be saved. A Coroner's Jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death."
