Conjmoq Diseases.
Conjmoq Diseases. THE LIVER. The liver is the largest organ in the body, and has multifarious duties to perform in the inter- nal economy of the digestive system. After the stomach it is the most abused of all the digestive organs. It is inflamed and hardened by the abuse of alcohol, and its functions are hindered and impaired by the tannic acid, the outcome of tea drinking. Errors in diet lead to a diminished secretion of bile. It becomes torpid and sluggish and the defects re-act on the blood current—deleterious products are car- ried into the circulation-the skin becomes muddy and yellow, the tongue furred. Life becomes a burden, and the victim says "Life is not worth living." He flies to drugs, blue pills, and other quack nostrums, and finds a tempo rary relief, and a rebound to a state worse than before; destroys his digestion by nauseous medi- cines and liver pills, and wonders why he con- tinues dull, languid, cranky, and out of sorts. He never pauses to consider the why and the wherefore, but continues to either doctor him- self or is doctored by others into a confirmed TrUelanctholy invalid, who invariably shuffles off the mortal coil of a miserable life through making his stomach a receptacle for all the so- called liver cures in the pharmacopoeia. There is only one method to maintain the liver in good working order, an dthat is atten- tion to Diet and Exercise. Happy is the man or woman who does not know they have a liver. Unless this mighty organ duly performs its principal function of secreting bile, a whole army of troubles arise. It cannot be done with medicine. It can. however, be done with a perfect food beverage, such as Dr Tibbies' Vi-Cocoa, which possesses exceptional vitalising properties. It will save your digestion part of its work, and is far more nourishing and sustenant than tea or the ordinary cocoa, whilst it possesses a tonic and recuperative force possessed by neither. Dr Tibbies' Vi-Cocoa. is pleasant and palatablo and embodying: as it does the numerous principles contained in Malt, Hops, Kola., and Cocoa., it imparts nourishment and builds up strength. As a Food Beverage it is invaluable. Dr Tibbies' VLCocoa is made up in 6d. packets, and 9d. and Is 6d tins. It can be ob. tained from all chemists, grocers, and stores, or from Dr Tibbies' VLCocoa, Limited, 60, 61, and 62. Bunhill Row, London, E.C. As a test of its merit a. dainty sample tin of Dr Tibbies' Vi-Cocoa will be sent free on appli- cation to any address, if when writing (a nost- card will do) the reader will name the "Glamor- gan Free Press."

MOUflTAIfl ASH DISTRICT COUNCIL. The Collector's Salary. HIS CLERKS SAID TO BE UNDERPAID. DR MORGAN, J.P., ON "CLAP-TRAP." A SCENE—AN EXPLANATION-SATIS- FACTION. The bi-monthly meeting of the Mountain Ash uistrict Council was held on Monday, under the presidency of Dr Morgan, J.P. There were also present Councillors W. Little, J. Powell, M. Morgan, J.P., T. Jones, William James, Rev J. F. Williams, Isaac George, G. Jones, E. Morgan, Rees Price, and Adam Clark; to- gether with the Clerk (Mr H. P. Linton), and the surveyor (Mr J. Williams). INFECTIOUS DISEASES. Dr E. P. Evans, the medical officer of health, reported that the following cases of infectious diseases had been notified during the last fort- night: Two of scarlet fever at Abercynon, one of membraneous croup at High street, Mountain Ash, and one of erysipelas at Paget street, Ynysvbwl. THE WATER SUPPLY. The surveyor (Mr J. Williams), in submitting his report said that during the last fortnight there had been an abundant and continuous supply of water, and that the reservoirs at pre- sent were nearly full.. The total rainfall dur- ing July had been 3.42; for the corresponding period of last year it was 3.11. CONDITION OF THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE. Mr J. W. Johns, the sanitary inspector, re- ported that all the slaughterhouses in the dis- trict had been inspected during the last fort- night, and all were found in a clean and whole- some condition. The scavenging of the district had also been can-ietl out satisfactorily. THE SALARY OF THE COLLECTOR. In accordance with a notice of motion, Coun- cillor Rees Price moved that the resolution passed on the 12th July, increasing the collec- tor's salary, txTrescinded, and that the matter be left over for the consideration of the new council when elected. Councillor Powell, in seconding, said that it was said about the town, and from very import- ant sources, that the collector only paid 10s and 3g each a week to his two clerks. He was of the opinion that the collector should explain these matters. Councillor Little moved a. direct negative. They had only increased the salary by JE50 a year, and he did not think it was too much of a remuneration for the responsibility and work which their collector had to undertake. In seconding the negative Councillor A. Clarke said It was none of the business of the Council what the collector paid his clerks, and it was of no importance to the Council how the work was being done, so long as it was done satis- factorily. Councillors M. Morgan and T. Jones also spoke in favour of the increase of salary. .Cfun&llor Powell .expitessed his desire to know the salaries paid by the collector to hie clerks. To pay £ 275 a year—which was a large amount—to the .collector, and he only pay £ 33 out of that to his clerks, was a little unreasonable and inconsistent with the usual order of things. The Chairman said they should not listen to the "clap-trap" of people outside. They should be above such things, and he was surprised that some members of the Council should be guilty of such acts. Councillor Powell: We are here representing the people. Although we have little discretion- ary powers, yt, when the electors wish a cer- tain thing, we should do our utmost to carry out their wishes. Ultimately the collector (Mr Evans) was called and asked if it was true that he only paid JE33 to his clerks.. Mr Evans replied that. he paid over £ 33 to one clerk, and the allegation was, therefore, un- true. Councillor Powell expressed his satisfaction with the collector's reply. On the motion being put to the meeting it was lost, by eight votes to four. MOUNTAIN ASH WATER. Mr William Jones, Aberffrwd road, Mountain Ash, wrote a letter calling the attention of the Council to the condition of water in that dis- trict, it being quite unfit for domestic use. After every shower of rain, it resembled the mud of the roads. On Sunday last the water could not be used for any mrpose, thus caus- ing great inconvenience to families. It was evident that there must be a great defect in the filtering, if there was any filtering at all done. He had been requested by several of the inhabi- tants to forward samples of the water to the County Medical Officer of Health. He trusted that this matter would be attended .to at once. B was resolved that Mr Mansard, the en- gineer, be instructed to make inquiries into the matter, and to hurry on the construction of the new reservoir. Included in the correspondence was a letter from Mr Creed, of the Powell Dvrffyn Steam Coal Company. The writer stated that the Ton Coch Reservoir had been made on a site different to the one originally intended, but as this deviated approach would seem to be more suitable and more convenient for farm purposes, he was instructed by his company to give sanc- tion to the deviated approach. EXCELLENT ADVICE. The Clerk read a letter from the District Councils' Association which stated that certain companies were applying for powers to supply electricity for lighting and other purposes. The Association, therefore, wished to impress upon the Council the importance of keeping those powers within their own control. The Board of Trade would always g-rant, those powers to a Local Authority in preference to a company. Any further information that the Council would require the association would be pleased to supply. ABERCYNON SANITARY SCHEME. The Clerk read a letter from Mr James Man- scigh, C.E., London, arpr0ving of the- idea of first securing the land from the Aberdare Joint Board before dealing with the sewerage of Abercynon. AN INTERESTING INCIDENT. The business of the meeting having been con- eluded, the Council members and officials to- gether with members of the Press, repaired to a position outside the hall, where they were photo- graphed by Mr Powell, photographer, Aber- cynon.
I Can Do As I Like."
I Can Do As I Like." A PENTRE HAULIER'S DISCOVERY. Before Alderman R. Lewis, and County Coun- cillor DJ. Thomas, at the Ystrad Police Court on Monday, Thomas Watkins and John Yeoman, two Pentre hauliers, were summoned for steal- ing several glasses and other measures, etc., the property of Mr John Davies, JanJlord of the Gelli ITotel, Ystrad. The prosecutor said that on the 31st ult., the two defendants came into the passage of the hotel and were served with a. half pint of beer each. Some time afterwards he missed several half pint measures and some glasses. ■P.O. White, late cn the night in question, saw Wat-us coming out of the hotel with a half pint glass in one hand and a tumbler in the other. He also saw Yeoman coming out with a half pint measure in his hand. Both de- fendants walked down the road, and Wat-kins threw the tumbler and smashed it. On being asked by the constable why lie did it, he replied" "I can do as I like with my cwn." Roth defen- dants then said that they had bought the measures at the Gelli Hotel.. A fine of 20s each was imposed.
