SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 189S.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 189S. THE period of industrial suspense which has reigned over this district for the last five months has been most trying and critical in the history of many commercial undertakings. Happy has been the directorate which by strength of reserve power has been able to emerge scatheless through the ordeal. We have before us a circular which shows that the Prudential Assurance Company has not only withstood the strain triumphantly, but has even shown strength enough to relax its monetary conditions in order to maintain its relationship with the policy-holders in the fullest measure of increased confidence. It is well known that the Society stands pre- eminent in the amount of its invested Funds, and that without that strong afcichorage it would have been the absurdest of fatuities for the Company to depart from its rules in its sympathy with the miner who was rudely prevented from maintaining compliance with regulations by the painful exigent

THE late Rev. John Davies, Cwmaman, is the subject of the seventh number of the series of publications entitled, "Y Tadau Annibynnol," and written by the Rev. W. I. Morris of this town. The writer had the fullest opportunity to know his subject. He lived in microscopic touch with him, and, in fact, Davies, Cwmaman," was the ministerial Gamaliel from whom he received the earliest breath of encourage- ment himself to accept the calling of a minister of the Gospel. He has written with the fidelity and affection of a loyal pupil. The late Davies, Cwmaman," was of no ordinary type. Un o feibion y daran oedd Davies." He was a student of the most painstaking order. The study and the pulpit were his most cherished places, and, as Mr. Morris says, his brilliancy in the latter was the revelation of his industry in the former. He was ordained at Penygraig, Car., as far back as 1829, and a noteworty fact in relation thereto is that Penygraig was the church which nursed him into the ministry. Few, indeed, are the instances in which churches recall to pastoral distinction one of their own Sunday School scholars, "Davies, Cwmaman," was a great reader, and without this continued sustenance pulpit brilliance is not possible. He read his books thoroughly and with the one aim of assimilating the best in them for his pulpit power. He wrote his sermons in detail, though in their delivery he had no manuscript. To us is still more striking the fact that he even wrote his prayers. Certainly, it is not surprising that J Davies, Cwmaman," was a pulpit stat of brilliant parts. The biography, though brief, is absorbingly interestiDIc The reading of this life must be a stimulus to attempt better things. Vi. have read it with infinite pleasure, an we trust, with still greater helpfu edification. «

THE strike is ended, and the evidence of industry are multiplying daily in or,, valleys. The Shipping World hafe an article in this week's issue whiclfc takes the same hopeful view of be eesult as taken by us last week. Did Mabon and his colleagues leaVf that conference empty? That the question which has exercised tt the minds of many. It is quite tri that in the bulk the settlement wai disappointing. The men went in at one time for a very elaborate pro- gwamme, but in the end everything was reduced to a question of minimutti Our contemporary briefly states the facts: "( 1 ) The men came out fiv months ago earning 2-1 per cent. aOO\1' 2 the 1879 standard, and they hav returned to their work with no or penalised or black-listed, with 17 P. cent. above the standard. (2) Thi came out against a bottomless slidif scale; have returned with a scale tJt, has at least a conditional bottom, a one that will, in our opinion, beco" I permanent and substantial. What » the least that can be said in favour 0 the conditional minimum secured fol the men ? It is this: that whereas under the old scale agreement, withoui the oonditional minimum, the me would have been in honour and eovenat) bound to work until January 1st, 190i for the earnings, however low, that tl1 scale might indicate; they are not entitled, whenever the wages go belo' 12-1 per cent. above 1879 standard aftl 2 September 1st, 1899, to give sixjmontl* notice terminable oit the 1st JanuarYi; July next ensuing, For example Should wages fall below 12! per cerfli between now and the end of DecernWj 1899, the men may bring their a ment to an end July 1st following But without this proviso they we] i bound for over four years by the oper4 tion of a bottomless scale, however 1(1\9 it might sink. But we do not anticipate the emergency between this day a: it the 1st January, 1903, when Clause 6 of the agreement shall be put in opei tion, for the simple reason that wedf not expect wages to fall below 12-1 jiec cent. above the 1879 standard with I Ie next half dozen years." Of cour e, Mabon's Day is the fester of disconten ts But we trust that it will not be alloy d to upset the present arrangement. b would be no use going to the coun;, upon this cir. bJatalto.1

deprivations of an over-prolonged dispute If with his employer. The Company has been generous, and this generosity is the most convincing proof of its well and solidly laid financial structure. We will refer to one departure the Company claims, and it is that in every case where death has occurred, although no claim could be made, the full amount stated on the policy has been paid in each instance without any delay, Mr Williams, superin- tendent of the Rhondda has alone paid in claims the large sum of X6,266 5s. 3d. from the commencement of the strike. Certainly this was a fine contribution to the Relief Funds. We are further assured that every reasonable facility will be offered to revive or recover derelict policies. The encouragement of thrift and pro- viaioas for dark days are elements of social progress which one and all must heartily welcome, and we, theie- fore, gladly contribute our quota of publicity of worthy deeds on the part of the Prudential Assurance Company. ♦
