1Ø;mw:- TRIBUTARY To the Rev William Rowlands, late Vicar of Fishguard. He's dead 'tis folly thus to speak Of one whose life was not a maze, Nor e'en a hollow sullen creek, Fit only for a demon's gaze Where spluttering chips of exile race, So densely fogged 'neath foamy shroud, Boisterously dupes in hideous chase, The shadow of a passing cloud. He lived, but sure enough his life Was not a frolicsome display, Whose musive whims engender strife, And priceless virtues thrown away Higher and nobler, yea by far, Was this life's pathway bravely trod, He shone as radiant as a star, And ever lived at peace with God. He craved no marvellous completion Of some sublime gigantic fete, Nor e'en a crazed inebriation, Thus to procure life's subtle greet; Such bubble hues and toadish taint Were ever foreign to his breast, He lived a man and died a saint, 'Twas surely thus he gained his rest. He sleeps, but not 'neath iron spell- The heritage of sin's domain, Whose withered hopes and stories tell Of wasted jife and endless pain But sure 'tis on true virtue's bed He rests awhile in sweet repose, Where Jesus once laid down his head, But conquered all and boldly rose. He speaks, but not in gallish tones That mar the peace of spicy breeze, And thus intensify the groans Of staggering souls that seek release But 'tis in words of mellowness, Of Christ-like precept and delight, That angels well might e'er caress, For such were heavenly, pure, and bright. So, fare-thee-well, dear Christian friend, Thou noblest son of boundless worthy For we must now our friendship end, As wishful pilgrims on i his earth 'Twill not be long, we'll meet again, With raptured souls and spirits free, Where peace is perfect, loss is gain, In your blest great eternity. 1- A CHURCHMAN.
