-u- CHARGE AGAINST A MILL MANAGER. At the Salford Sessions, on Tuesday, William Ashworth, manager of the Castletwou Spinning Company, Heywood. was charged with fraudu- lently falsifying and altering items in the books of the company. The accused had been in the employ Of the company thirty years and had been manager avid secretary for seven years. False entries were discovered early this year, and the prisoner at once admitted he had made them. The discrepancies amounted to several thousand pounds. In cross- examination, Mr. Crabtree, one of the directors, stated that the losses were caused by speculations in cotton. If the prisoner's speculations had proved successful, probably the directors would not have complained. The defence was that the prisoner's speculations were made for the benefit of the company, and not for himself, and tbr' there was no fraudulent intent.
