Commons last week, Mr Gladstone referring to the Tithe Bill, said that the Hoose ought to be prepared to approach any reasonable proposal in the reverse of a captious spirit There was in the House those who considered tithe the sacred and indefeasible patrimony of the Church, and there was another body hold- ing the directly reverse opinion but whethe it was the property of the Church or the pr p rty of the nation, it was a property of which Parliament was a steward, for the custody oi which members were responsible, and for the preservation and maintenance of which they were also responsible He hoped that it woul • be in that spirit, and not in the spirit of sim- ple condescension to the difficulties of tht moment, that they would approach the coubi- deration of the proposals of the Government.
