-ç- Death of Rev. Dr. Parker. Dr Joseph Parker, the well-known Con- gregat,iollal leader, passed peacefully away at five o'clock on Friday evening at his Hampsitead residence, after an illness of some week's deration. The Rev Joseph Parker. D.D.. was born April 9, 1830. of humble parents, at Hexham on Tyne. He studied theology under Dr Cameron, of Moorfields. and ihcii became a student, at University College, preaching at the old Barbican Chapel as a "supply." In 1853 he became pastor of the Congregational Church at Banbury, where he remained five years, becoming minister of the Cavendish- street Church. Manchester, in 1858. There he laboured eleven years, and in 1869 re- moved to London, where he became pastor of the Old Poultry Chapel. By this time. Dr Parker had a-ehieved considerable fame, both as a preacher and a writer. Late in the fifties lie used to hold controversial dis- courses with Secularists in the open air. and his "Help to Truth-seekers. issued in 1857, contains the pith of those discourses. When the late Sir Jolin Seeliev published his re- markable work. "Ecce Homo," which created such a sensation in its day. Dr Parker re- plied with Eccie Deus." and this. in its ■turn, was received with much favourable interest. In 1874 the City Temple, which had been built at a cost of £ 70.000 was opened. and from that day to this the great chapiel has been one of the leading relig ous foci of London, and elosiely identified during eight and twenty years with the name of Dr Parker. During the lifetime of Charles Spurgeon, the City Temple was. perhaps, overshadowed by the Tabernacle, but when Spurgeon died, ten years ago. Dr Parker's chapel took first rank as a centre of Noncon- formist interest in the grleat Metropolis. To hear Parker was what few thoughtful people failed to do of a Sunday when visiting Lon- don. and on the whole he was eminently worth the hearing. His style was declama- tory, and at times sensational. even eccen- tric, but there was no mistaking the earnest- ness and importance of his message or the deep and fervent feeling with which it was delivered. Dr Parker's fame brought him honour after honour in his own denomina- tion. He was at one time or another the chairman of the Lancashire Congregational Union; chairman of the Manchiester Congre- ga,tio,nal Board chairman of the London Con gregational Board (twice); and chairman of the Congregational Union of England and Wales. In 1894 Dr Parker completed the tirtnty-fifth year of his ministry in London. and was presented with a cheque for a thousand guineas. The same year he wrote to ttue Times to point out that the custom of reporting and publishing sermons, is a form of literary piracy against which preachers should protect, themselves. The hon. degnee of D.D. was conferred on h m by the Univer- sity of Chicago. In 1898 he celebrated his jubilee as a ipireacher. Of Dr Parker's very numerous works the one by which he is best known is his People's Bible."Dr Parker was twice married. His first wife whom he married in 1851 was Ann Nesbitt. of Horsley Hills; his second was the daughter of Andrew Common, of Sunderland, sistter of the famous astronomer. Dr A. A. Common, of Ealisg. late president of the Royal Astronomical Society, and of Mr J. F. Common. Cathedral road, Cardiff. 2Irs Parker, who was a most accomplished woman and a devoted helpmeet and to whom he, was tenderly attached, died in 1898, and his references to his late wife made in the pulpit of the City Temple, were almost pitiful in the depth of their pathos Dr Parker paid his last visit to Cardiff in 1D01, when he preached at the Park Hall to a dense and enrapt throng on the occasion of the Free Church Congress. On his seven- tieth birthday, Dr Parker preached on the text, •• The days of our years are three-score year and tien." Replying to the questioRS of an intervic-iver on the higher criticism, the veteran minister said. I am till standing with the Bible in my haaid. The higher cri- ticism ha.s not cost me an hour's sleep. I have been able to eat my iii)Eils regularly, notwithstanding all that. VULGAR ATTACK BY THE TIMES. SPIRITED REBUKE BY DR. LUNN. Preaching at St. James's Hall, London, last Sunday evening. Dr Henry S. Lin.n said that Saturday's Times contained a most deplorable attack upon the Nonconfor- mist oonsciencte and upon one of the "sons of thunder whom Nonconformity were now mourning. This powerful paper, in its obituary of Dr Parkier. had forgotten the great rule against defaming the cead. and in speaking of the City Temple as a, going concern," and a "successful embodiment of the oncon for mist conr/citence." and of Dr Parker as the managing director of that flourishing and strictly limited company, the City Temple," i had made a cruel attack upon Nonconformity in the hour cf a grfeat double sorrow, and had been supremely guilty of that vulgarity and flippancy with which it charged Dr Parker. To state thr. Dr Parker's income exceeded that of the Archbishop of Canterbury was a wild travesty of the truth, As a matter of fact, Dr Parker was a ten times greater man than any ,editor of the Times since Delaue. and received less than Tialf the salary of the journalistic magnate. Moreover, his LV :ier- osity in private life was enormous, and many a poor ipasitor thajt day mourned the loss of his helper. As for the attack on the Non- conformist conscience generally, they had in that hall lost a leader who belonged to a ministry which gave according to its powers, and received according to its needs, and no more. Mr Price Hughes received a > il.ny of f-300 a year, and certain allowances nf house rent. etc. Surely Nonconformity mif'lit 'hare been spared this cruel attack in this time of deep mourning.
