ABERDARE AND THE PEACE PROPOSALS. THE miners of South Wales have by an overwhelming majority decided in favour of accepting the coalowners' terms. The most pronounced dis- sentient note came from the Aberdare district, where several lodges declared against accepting the owners' terms and in favour of a stoppage. For some time matters assumed an ugly aspect, and it looked as if Aberdare were to be the cockpit of a severe struggle. Wiser counsels, however, prevailed, and the men have decided to fall in with the other districts, although under protest. In adopting this course they have doubtless shown tact and discretion. The miners may have a just grievance; and the proffered terms may be unsatis- factory, but it would have been as futile for Aberdare to refuse to fall in with other districts as it would have been for the South Wales coalfield to strike out on its own in defiance of the attitude of the English and Scotch, miners. For the sake of the peace of the district, and the ultimate welfare of the miners themselves, we are glad that the men of Aberdare have decided to adhere to constitutional methods of dealing with the many industrial evils which call for redress.

Aberdare Baby Show. As it was intimated some time ago in, these columns the High Constable has been approached by several medical gentlemen with a view to holding a Baby Show at Aberdare. Particularly interested in the movement is Dr Evan Jones, J.P., and Mrs Jones, the latter having already kindly consented to give prizes to the value of zClO, and several other prizes will be added, The show will probably be held in October, and we have every reason to believe that it will prove the success here that it has proved in other towns", Fuller particulars will appear later.

Scraps. BY "SCRIBE." Half a century ago it was a common' thing for newspapers to undergo oper- ations with the view to obtaining a healthy U circulation." The following appeared in the Cardiff Times" at that period: — "'The Star of Gwent' has undergone another surgical operation without the aid of chloroform, and still maintains a precarious existence. It first started the South. Wales Times," and extended • its circulation to Merthyr, for,, the purpose of cutting out the 'Merthyr Telegraph.' Subsequently it issued the Merthyr and Aberdare Times.' Then ■ coming to Cardiff it issued the 'Cardiff Advertiser.' On this failing it issued the "Bridgend Times' in opposition to the 'Bridgend Chronicle." Now this has failed, and the 'Star' retires once mora to its shell at Newport." But fancy a star retreating, snail-like, to its shell! In these days, when they have spent out their sparks the stars re- tire behind the i-cenes of a music hall, or clear out of the firmament to make room- for some newly discovered comet. n Re the action. taken by the Aberdare Chamber of Trade to have the Aberaman main road watered, we learn that Mr. G. 1\ Treharne, C.C., had already moved in :he matter.
