Local Wedding. BONNER—GRIFFITHS. On Wednesday of last week, the wed- ding of Mr. David Bonner, Brynafan House, Gilfach Goch, and Miss Lizzie A. Griffiths, Erwyd House, Penygraig, was solemnised at Pisgah Chapel, Penygraig. The ceremony was performed by the Revs. Jaines Morris, Llanstephan, and John James, New Tredegar. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. B. E. Griffiths, was charmingly attired in an Empire dress of cream striped voile, trimmed with real lace insertion and white silk. She wore a, large cream picture hat with ostrich feathers. There were two bridesmaids—Miss M. Bonner (sister of bridegroom) and Miss Katie M. Jones. Both wore Empire gowns of cream canvas, artistically trimmed with lace silk and I bob fringe. Miss Bonner wore a~" Merry Widow hat of wine-coloured silk, with an ostrich feather of same tint; and Miss Jones had on a black picture hat, with black ostrich feathers. Mr. J. Mid-Rhondda Powderhall. Sportsmen in Mid-Rhondda may look forward to great things in the near future. During an interview with Mr. David Llewellyn, the late secretary of the LIwynypia. Football Club, and the pre- sent secretary of the Mid-Rhondda. Social and Athletic Club, we learn this gentle- man is of the opinion that, seeing the Welsh Powderhall at Pontypridd has been a great success, the same could be done in Mid-Rhondda, for the reason that the ground and all the railway facilities can be obtained; and with, the assistance of tradesmen and the inhabi- tants generally (which is already p i-o- mised), this fixture should prove a huge success. This event is likely to take place in August next. From April onward throughout the season there will be sports hekl monthly, at which the best sporting talent will appear. We congratulate Mr. Llewellyn on being appointed secretary and treasurer of the above club. We understand there were. no rower than 167 aoilicatio-ns.

Welsh Topics. Rhor.dda Place-Names. I. VILLAGES. 6. Cwmparc; the valley of the pare, a word which means an enclosed piece of ground. Pare, the Welsh form of the Engj ish word park, is a, word common to both the Teutonic and Celtic tongues. It is one of the words found in Glamorgan due to the Norman influence. A farmer well, acquainted with this spot once in- formed me that he well remembered such an enclosure in this date. The village name is thus clearly derived from thus little plot which was walled in. It was once thought that the word pare was only common to Carmarthen and Pem- broke, where it means a field; but its presence in this valley gives denial to that fact. There are two farms which bear the name pare—Pare Islia and Pare U elm. 7. Ystrad means a flat valley, or low- lying country beside a river. It bears the same meaning as strath (cf. Strath- more, in Scotland). The word has no connection, as is sometimes thought, with the Latin strata, a paved way; but is rather derived from a Celtic word mean- ing first the river in the valley, and secondly the land beside the river. The name is also, found in Ystrady- fodwg" Ystradfechan, and Ystrad Ffyrnol (or. as written, Ystrad Ffernol). Ystrad was once applied to the whole Valley, as may be seen from the fact that the Valley was called Cwm yr Ystrad, and the inhabitants Gwyr yr Ystrad." 8. Pentre, a compound word formed from pen, meaning chief or first, and tre, tref meaning a village or township. Need- less to say that this is a very common place-name in Wales. First given to a farm, then to the few homesteads near by, and now to the district around. ■Pentre contains the oldest dwelling-places of the Rhondda, for formerly it was known as Pentre'r Ystrad. It must not be thought, though, that this is the only I Pentre in the Valley; there is Pentre Agil, Pentre Cegil, and a Pentre above Penygraig. D. Gelli or Gelly. A very common place- name in Wales, signifying a. grove or bower. Cr. Gelliwen, Gelliwastad, Tref y Gelli. Gelliwig, and in the Rhondda itself Gellifaliog or Gellifaelog, and Gelligaled. It was variously spelt by the Norman- Frenfh. e.g. Kethly, Kelle, Kolli, and by the Welsh scribes" Celli," as may be seen from Pencelli and Celiigaer." The presence of the K has caused some critic's to believe that the true form should be Celli," and thus connect it with cell," meaning a sanctuary or a place of worship. This is done to please nre-conceived notions regarding the name, and thus they are contorted to suit the fancies of the writers. 10. Bodringallt. Here is a word which has puzzled many who have attempted to solve it. Many reasons have been given for the explanations advanced, but so far very unsatisfactory. "Bod" is easily ex- plained as a dwelling-place or residence. The difficulty lies with ringallt." Here are a few of the solutions :-(1) Bod- rhwng-dwy-allt, i.e., a dwelling-place be- tween two copses of wood. This cannot —————m + he accepted, for at one time the whole of the Rhondda was one extensive wooded glen. (2) That "ringallt" is a corrupted form of "rhingyll," and that the true and only way of spelling it is Bod- rhingyll," in honour of Cadwgan the j Battle-Axe, fa'ho is said to nave lived there. This, too, must be refused, as by no possible means can ringallt" he derived from "rhyngyll." (3) Another author explains it as Bod-reynallt (¡;;ic\ i.e., the fox's abode, because the Valley was noted for the haunts of Reynard. Like the second, there is 110 phonetic reason given at all. If these place-names are to be satisfac- torily solved, then the rules regarding sounds and changes must be fully recog- nised. We believe that the proper mean- ing is Bod-Reinallt," the abode of Reinallt. But who was Reinallt? He was a hard of the sixteenth century who lived in this Valley. We learn that he was present at a gathering of the bards held on Craig y Dinas. His name appears last on the list, and it is conjectured that he was the secretary of the movement, which accounts for his placing his own name last. There were present: —Dafydd Benwyn, Shon Morys Lwyd, Dafydd Llwyd Matthew, Llywelyn Shon Llangewydd. Antoni Powel the historian, Gronwy William, Morgan Powel, and Harri Reinallt. But here is the difficulty. The place- name to-day is "Ringallt," as in Bod- ringallt and Nant Ringallt," while the person's name is "Reinallt." There are two things to be accounted for; first, how came ei into" i," and secondly, whence came the "g" in "ringallt." As to the first, it is well known that in the dialect of Glamorgan an ei of the first syllable in dis-syllabic words becomes "i," as eira is now ira, peidio is pido, gwreiddiau is gwridda, &c. Regarding the g," one finds it a common thing to find it inserted after n," as prin becomes pring (scarce), Lladin is Llading, and mwswn is now mwswng, &c. Those two reasons dispose of the ei and the presence of the g." The "steps towards the formation of the present form would be thus:—(1) Bod- Reinallt, (2) Bod-Rinallt, (3) Bod-Ringallt. The site of the old house is the present residence of Councillor Thomas Thomas. Next article, Place-names of Mid- Rhondda. New Player for Mid-Rhondda. We learn that Tommy Williams (late of Llwynypia), who has been playing for Salford and Swinton. has been transferred to the Mid-Rhondda Athletic Football Club, and will turn out in the match against Barry on the 23rd inst. There is no doubt that all his local admirers will be pleased to see him once more amongst us. It is gratifying to note that he is in excellent form, and there is no doubt that he will prove a great acquisition to the local team, as his knowledge of the Northern Union game is par excellence. Opium-Taking in Many Lands* PERIL OF OLD COUGH-CURES." SCIENCE REVEALS A UNIQUE NOVELTY. The degenerate Chinese smoke their opium; the Turks eat tlielrs; but in England it has, in the past at any rate, been largely drunk in liquid mixtures, with the erroneous idea of curing coughs and colds, while all the time it is merely the nerves that are" drugged to sleep." At the back of the mouth are two tubes, one the gullet along which all food is .conveyed to the stomach; and the other, consisting of the throat and windpipe, organs used solely to take the breath of life to the lungs and send the bad "air out. Between the stomach and the lungs no passage whatever exists. Hence to get at the root of throat and lung troubles it becomes necessary to alter the form of the medicine itself. The accomplishment of this in Peps and the freedom of the of this in Peps and the freedom of the Peps medicine from opium gives this remedy its unique character and its extra- ordinary success. A Peps tablet, divested of its preserving silver wrapper, is placed on the tongue, and as it dissolves, certain rare medicinal fumes are given off which can thc-n be breathed quite easily down the throat and windpipe into the lungs. These. delicate air-passages which have been irritated by frequent coughing and got clogged with phlegm are soothed, cleared, and strength- ened the lungs are invigorated, and all germs likely to provoke inflammation and disease are destroyed or expelled A few Peps tablets before going to sleep, and occasionally during the day, will end the most hacking cough, make one's breathing easy, and bring oomfort to the chest. At the same time, there is the happy consciousness that no dangerous and nerve-depressing drugs like opium, morphia, chloral, or menthol are being taken into the system, but. instead, only the purest and most novel breathe-able- essences that were ever concentrated and locked up in a handy, compact tablet. Peps bring new hope to chest sufferers, for cases are on record showing that neither age nor the long-standing nature of the trouble is any barrier to relief and cure.
