Mid-Rhondda Musings
Mid-Rhondda Musings Disaffection still exists among the Glamorgan Colliery employees. -+-- A meeting of the workmen was held on Monday evening, but the reporters present were asked to leave. Talking of reporters, a good story was told the other day by one of the tribe. Me is the Rhondda representative of a Conservative daily paper, and on Tuesday evening, in the absence of the appointed chairman, ho was asked to preside over a Liberal meeting at It was this gentleman who some years ago sub-edited a Radical weekly and acted as the local correspondent of the organ he is now connected with. One of his friends, rather mystified by this mixing up of connections, asked him one day, "What are your politics, Mr. ]I'm zb Journalist," promptly returned the Pressman. -+-- Representations are being made to the Admiralty that in future C> new warships should be christened with Welsh names. "Teare informed on good authority that no Jack Tar considers his education com- plete until he is able to command a fluency in Welsh swear words. A County gentleman, always thirst- ing after a joke, was evidently amused at seeing a number from each of the various chapels—wise splits and otherwise— meet together recently to hear a popular lecturer, and enquired' waggishly of his friend, "Is this "heaven? for Ave are all here Hia intended prey must have scored heavily, for not a smile crossed the wag's disc when tho prompt reply came: No, this is not heaven! In heaven there are many mansions—a building for each lot there, too! --+- We learn with, pleasure that, after a considerable absence, Mr. Marks Harris has returned to manage the furniture establishment known as The Bristol Fur- nishing Company, Pandy Square.
Penygraig Peps.
Penygraig Peps. The Rev. J. O. Evans has had a call to tho pastorate of Soar and Trehil. We hear that he is giving it a most earnest I consideration; --+- A daring motorist recently, in order to escape the mud of Hendrecafn Road, took Lis cart with lightning ispeed along the pavement. Mothers,: beware! or it will fae a case of where-be the children. --+- The singing school at Pisgah Chapel is proving a very great attraction. Many come to hoar the choir practising St. Paul." The prospects of an excellent concert are very promising.. --+- Mr. Augustus Lloyd, son of Mr. R. Lloyd, chemist, has returned from Aus- tralia, after spending many years there. He looks well and intends going hack again,
Pentre Pellets.
Pentre Pellets. Now that juvenile smoking is about to be suppressed, wo venture to ask, Can a 1110ther-tsoil '■ a cigar to her offspring? Perhaps one of our friends from the land o' cakes could enlighten us upon this I)urii-rw question. Someone has been" sponging again, for a, local hairdrooser bewails the loss of a dog collar. Were he to advertise the fact, he would doubtless receive many callers," who would deposit a good crop of the missing article. It is rumoured 'locally that a member ef a well-known family intends embark- ing upon a stage career. He evidently thinks that cutting a dash before the lootlights will hint him better than •scraping for a living. i *S, ^"tairJ'y an annoying experience ,0 3-6 taken 011 a tramcar a hundred 01 wo yards beyond your destination v^orrectly speaking, we should say thai this is carrying things too far Tho budding philosopher who, at r Acntro social the other evening made the startling remark that if Moses was the fiort of Pharaoh's daughter, he must have been the daughter of Pharaoh's son," was quite correct. Read his sentence care- fully. We are rather surprised to notice that lentre lacks the loyalty to unfurl the Standard from the flagstaff of her Mansion House, for a member of the Roy all family is invariably found within its chambers. -+- Margaret Ann had spent her "Sunday night out" at the Tivoli, and after wit- nessing the remarkable earthquake film exclaimed Well I never! Don't those earthquakes make an awful house/' --+- Don't forget that dirty windows keep out trade as well as light." There are a few shopkeepers at Pentre who could note this ada,ge to their advantage.
Porth Jottings,
Porth Jottings, We would very respectfully draw the attention of the powers that be to the JiCI T .c ,'so aspect of the lower gate at the Llethrddu Cemetery. We think it manifestly unfair to the public that gates which were placed there for their con- venience are continually closed to them. Most of the interments take place in the area below the entrance to the ceme- tery, and when people have walked from .Wa.ttstown, Tylorstown, Ferndale, and from Trehafod—as is the case nearly every day-it is certainly an injustice that they are enforced to walk nearly three- quarters of a mile further became this gate (that should be the exit) is shut and Jocked. -+-- We trust that this grave" matter will shortly be attended to. Thanks to the unstinted zeal and energy of Dr. R. D. Chalke, M.A., the Porth Harmonic Society are shortly going to perform Stabat Mater and The Last Judgment" at the Park Hall, Cardiff. --+-- This announcement was hailed with delight by the choir on Sunday evening last. There is no reason why Porth and district should not exclaim "Excelsior." --0-- It is gratifying to learn that the recent house-to-house collection to aug- ment the funds of the Dr. Barnardo's Homes has been attended with excellent results. The secretary, Mr. Wm. Evans (Thomas & Evans), has been enabled to hand over zC20 to that noble institution. --+-- The Porth Thursdays are rapidly ac- quiring fame as exponents of the Soccer* game, and are fast setting an enviable record. Inspired with recent successes, they met and thoroughly vanquished Treore-by oii Thursday last. The feature of the game, however, was the remarkable exhibition of clever foot- ball, by Evans, the Porth centre. Roberts and Jones were also very smart at back, their defence being particularly fine. The latest in "adverts." is to be seen in a local chemist's shop window, which reads: Spanish Juice, 2d. per Stick." Probably we shall next hear the milk- man calling out: "Milk! Milk! 2d. a yard," or, perhaps, the butcher: "Pork! 2d. a pint," Any of our readers in search of a real bargain in blankets, quilts and sheets, should not fail to read what Morgan's, 73 and 74, Hannah Street, Porth, are offering.
