Ogmore Vale. Omission.—La.st week we ommitted to state the success of the Ogmore Vale Mixed Choir at Blaengarw Eisteddfod, held on March 22nd. The test piece was "Lead, kindly Light" (Pughe Evans). The "Lead, kindly Light" (Pughe Evans). The choir was successful in capturing the first Prize of £10. and a chair to the conductor, Mr. W. M. David. The choir are natur- ally much gratified at their continued suc- cess, and intend making, a bold bid for the prize at Mountain Ash on Easter Monday. --+-- The soprano solo prize, at the same ttieeting was won by Miss Lizzie Kinsey. This young artiste lias already gained nearly 40 prizes in the eisteddfodic arena. --+-- .Mr. Glyn Palmer was successful in win- ing two first prizes, viz., the baritone aild championship solos. --+-- Mission.—The mission which has been "5fld at Bethel Primitive Methodist ^hapel during the past week has been highly successful. Sister Elen, concluded her mission on Monday evening, when .he delivered a touching address to a iarge audience on the Mission work car- *']ed on in London.: She gave a. graphic description of the work in the slums of the Metropolis, and of the hardships wMch Miss(ioners had to endure in these places of sin and vice. At the close a collection was taken in aid of the Sisters Settlement, in connection with the South East London Mission. —— Funeral.—On Saturday last the -mortal •'?9mainy of Miss Blodwen Davies were in- terred at the Ogmore Vale Cemetery. De- ceased was the only daughter of Mr and Mrs. W.^ Myrnach Davies. Death took place ax Maesteg, where the family now lesme, and it i,s only within the last few Montiis that the family had removed Aiom Ogmore Vale. Deceased, who was +i s .°f age, had been a member of ?e English Congregational Church, and Played in the string band there. The day fine, a 'large crowd, awaited the 3 clock train, by which the remains were l'ought from Maesteg. Mr. Joseph Short, 11, Hendrefadog Street, was accidentally killed while following his employment as rider at one of Messrs. D. Davis and Sons' collieries on Monday last.

TonyrefaiS. On Wednesday last, the funeral of the late Mrs. Edwards, wife of Mr. John Edwards, contractor, Tylhvyd, took place at the C.M. burial-ground, Tonyrefail. There was a large number of relatives and friends present, in .spite of the inclement weather. Deceased was an old and faithful member of the local C.M. Church. The Rev. R. Morgan officiated. On Wednesday of last week, the ad- journed monthly meeting of the Chamber of Trade was held at the Institute. The Chamber for some time past have been considering the formation of a Rate- payers' Association for the district, and on Wednesday it was decided that Messrs. D. Enoch and Levi Morgan should con- vene a public meeting to finally discuss the matter. This meeting was held on Tuesday evening at the Institute. There was a good attendance, and very instructive addresses were given by Messrs. Isaac Edwards, Merthyr, and H. Sheppard, Penygraig. After the meeting, it was decided to form the Association, and a committee of thirteen were appointed to draft rules, &c. On Thursday evening, at the C.M. Chapel (kindly lent), a musical treat was afforded the residents of Tonyrefail in the form of a concert held under the auspices of Bethel Chapel. The artistes were Misses Amy Evans and Tydfil Brown, and Messrs. Herbert Emlyn, R.A.M., and D. Brazel. The accompanist was Prof. R. Howells Aberdare. There was a crowded audience. The proceeds were towards liquidating the debt of Bethel Cong regati on a 1 Ch a pel. On Saturday last, the funeral of the late David John, Station Road, took place, the interment' being at Castellan. Deceased was 69 years of age. On Saturday evening, a social evening was spent by the young people of the Bible Christian Church, Penrhiwfer Road. A sumptuous supper was provided, after which those present indulged in games, &c. The proceeds will be devoted towards the chapel debt fund. --+-- It may be interesting to some of the younger residents of Tonyrefail to know that St. David's Church has recently been licensed by the Bishop of Llanclaff for marriages, so that all marriages in the Tonyrefail district can now be performed thereat.

On Wednesday evening, March 21th, the Ystrad-Hhondda Division of the St. John's Ambulance Association, held their annual examination, the examiner being Dr. Armstrong, of Treorchy. Twenty competitors presented themselves, of whom several were new members sitting for their first year's certificate, and all were successful. It is pleasing to note that the Ystrad-Rhondda Division now numbers 39. Great credit is due to the instructor, Dr. E. L. Phillips, Ystrad- Rhondda, and we hear that the division have decided to make him a small remuneration for his valuable services.

WiUSamstown. I We regret to record the death of Mrs. E. Kerslake, Cornwall Road, Williams- town, revealing a very sad state of things. Deceased leaves a weak and ailing husband and also ten little children to mourn her loss. When the circumstances became known, several local ladies became interested in the case, and collected £ 16 3s., out of which £ 14 17s. 84. has been ••spent on the needs of the family, leaving a balance of £ 1 5s. 4d. The collectors desire to thank all subscribers and wish to make a further appeal for useful clothing for these little children, the youngest being only fifteen months old. Hospital for Upper Rhondda. Another meeting of the Upper Rhondda VYorkmens' Lodge was held at the Griffin Hotel on Wednesday. The decision arrived at was to make the whole matter as public as possible during the next month. Each lodge is to do its best to obtain support in its own district, so that the first public meeting at the Assembly Rooms, Pentre, on April 21st, will be as representative as possible of the whole population of Upper Rhondda. The cost of circularising and billposting for the meeting will be defrayed by Mr Tom Evans, D.C., Penygraig, a gentle- man who has shown great interest in the movement from the commencement. We hope that other local gentlemen of in- fluence and wealth will give their moral and financial support to such a deserving cause.

Forth. It is with sad regret that we have to record the death and burial of Mr. John Lewis, late official at the Cymmer col- lieries for 28 years. Deceased was born at Merthyr, and was the son of the late Elias Lewis, of "Y Wern," who served for many years as manager under the Crawsha'y "family, Merthyr Mr. John Lewis came to Porth about 30 years ago, and remained there up to the time of his death, which took place at his resi- dence, Penypound, Cymmer on the 18th iiist., after an illness of some months' duration, borne vith much patience and fortitude. He was a man admired by all who came into contact with him, and the esteem in which he was held was evinced by the large concourse of people who came to pay their last tribute to the deceased on Tuesday. The coffin, which was of unpolished oak, was covered with beautiful wreaths, sent by "The Colliery Officials," Windsor Building Club," and "Mistress and Staff of Cymmer Infants' School," etc. The officiating minister was the Rev. J. T. Davies, who spoke in high terms of the deceased. The chief mourners were Mrs. Lewis (widow); Tom Lewis (son), Misses Amelia. Pentre. About twenty members of the Pentre Branch of the National Association of Prudential Assurance Agents were pre- sent at the usual monthly meeting held on Friday last at the headquarters, Central Hotel, Pentre. An excellent and c very lucid report of the conference held in London, on March lO'th and 11th was given by the Pentre delegate. Mr. D. J. Hughesi. He was accorded a hearty, vote of thanks. A letter from the Pentre Trades and Labour Council was read by the secretary, Mr. Hughes, containing an invitation to the N.A.P.A.A., to unite with the above. There was an unanimous desire in this direction, and the president and secretary were appointed as representatives of the branch at the next meeting of the Trades and Labour Council. It was also decided to hold, the first annual dinner of the branch on April 23rd at, the Central Hotel, when one of the T and L Committee will preside and Mr. Wyatt, Cardiff, a member of the executive council, is ex- pected as principal guest. Obituary.—Pentre resident^ will be sorry to hear of the recent death of Mrs Anthony, wife of Mr J. Anthony, formerly draper, Commerce House, Pentre. On retiring from their long established busi- ness at Pentre, Mr and Mrs Anthony went to live at but unfortunately Mrs Anthony had been in failing health ever since. We extend our sincerest sympathy to Mr Anthony in his great bereavement. Obituary.—After a very long and painful illness, Mrs John Lloyd, 55, Queen Street, died on Saturday morning. The burial took place on Thursday afternoon at Treorchy Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the large number of relatives of the deceased lady. Baker's Success.—We congratulate Mr. E. Anlin, Pentre, upon his successes at the Bakery Jixihibition held at Ponty- pridd on Thursday last. Mr Aplin, who is a baker at the Popular Restaurant, Pentre, secured a gold medal and. diploma together with an electro-plated cup, sup- plemented with a cheque of three guineas. in the class known as the Tin Loaf White Bread Department. He again scored in the counter goods class, being awarded a third prize and diploma, a record of which any person might he nroud. Mr. Apliu, nrior to coming to Pentre, was employed as baker at the Waverely Cafe, Pontvnool, and although of comparatively recent ^importation to the Valley. has made himself very ponular. Rhondda Tennis Club.—The annual meeting in connection with the Upper Rhondda Tennis Club, was held at the Central Hotel, Pentre, on Tuesday even- ing, Major R. C. Dyke presiding. Impor- tant business was transacted, including the election of officers for the ensuing season, which resulted as follows —Presi- dent. Mr. G. H. Smith, Maindee Hall chairman. Major R. C. Dyke. Bank treasurer, fl". Woodward. "Tho.rniea," Pentre; secretary, Mr. T. Llewellyn. Pentre; and committee composed of three ladies and five Qentlemen. The opening of the season, which will be cele- brated with a tea uoon the grounds (weather permitting") will take place on Raturdav, Mav 1st. A successful season is anticipated, and matches are to be arranged with adjoining; clubs. Votes of thanks were accorded the chairman and secretary. (I) Presentation.—A very interesting pre- sentation meeting was held at the Wes- levan Schoolroom on Tuesday evening, March 23rd. when Mr. Jack Cadogan was the recipient of a handsome dressing case as a mark of the esteem in which he was held bv his Sunday School classmates. Mr. Cadogan sailed for Winnipeg, Canada. on Friday last. (I) Pentre folk will undoubtedly be dis- appointed to learn that Colonel Lawley— General Booth's constant companion—will be unable to conduct the forthcoming meetings at the Salvation Army Barracks. The Colonel is at present accompanying the General upon his Scandinavian tour, but an able substitute has been secured in the person of Brigadier Gill, the Young People's secretary. (I) Is the following a record? The number of children orally examined at Siloh Sun- day School last week was only seven short of 200. We should be glad to hear of other similar results. (I)
