Cricket. LLWYNYPIA v. LLANTRISANT. The cricket (season at Llwynypia was opened last Saturday with a. match versus Llantrisant. It being the first match for both te>ams, the cricket was not of a very high standard, although there were a few very creditable displays. Isaac Edmunds rattled up his 48 in commendable style, very creditable displays. Isaac Edmunds rattled up his 48 in commendable style, and it must have pleased the home selec- tion committee, who are in rather a fix with regard to bowlers this season, to see W. G. Morris bowl so well. He bowled unchanged and captured six wickets for 5 runs. Brychan Jones also had the good analysis of three wickets for 2 runs. If such form can be kept up, then the loss of two such fine players as F. Bennett and H. M-. Watkins will not be so much felt as was once anticipated. Scores:- LLWYNYPIA. The Upper Rhondda Tennis Club.
The Upper Rhondda Tennis Club. The grounds of the Upper Rhondda Tennis Club, which comprises three tennis courts, a croquet lawn and bowling green were opened on Saturday last. Favoured with beautiful weather, a goodly number gathered to participate in the opening games of the season. The gentlemen of the club had arranged a free-and-easy tea for this auspicious occasion, which was served upon the grounds by several lady members. The only fly in their honey was the absence of the respected presi- dent—Mr. G. H. Smith, Maindy Hall- who is, unfortunately, confined" to his rooms through illness. The committee and the secretary are to be complimented upon the success of the proceedings. Amongst those present we noticed Major R. Letters to the Editor.
Letters to the Editor. Letters on any subject of public interest are cordially invited. The insertion of a letter does not vecessarily mean that the Editor agrees with the views ex- pressed therein. Correspondents should write on one side of the paper only, and 110 letter will be published unless the writer sends his name and address, not necessarily fur publication, but as a guarantee (f good faith. An Appeal to the Workers. To the Editor of the Rhondda Leader." Sir,—At the risk of being voted a nuisance, I desire to reach the minds of my fellow-workers, and in order to make this possible I shall esteem it a favour if you will insert this in your puper. A great deal of valuable time and labour, of both man and beast, is wasted daily by the thoughtless way in which my neighbours are dealing with a very necessary section of the community—the grocer's haulier. The cause of this waste is an old one, viz., late shopping, and until we realise that a deluge of orders being handed in at a late hour must inevitably result in a loss of time and labour, we shall not get any nearer the remedy. It is no use growling at the grocer he is in the hands of hie patrons to a very large extent, and would gladly do all in his power to improve the present state of affairs. It is hard to believe that a great number of those who are to blame are social reformers, or their wives, whilst others are ardent agitators for the cause of the workers in other spheres. N inty- nine out of every 100 of the late orders come from the homes of working men. Fellow-workers, the remedy is in our hands. We seek justice and fair dealing from our masters. Shall we then refuse these things to our servants? I could tell a long story of hardships to man and beast, but I am convinced that just a little thought will set the matter right at the cost of a slight effort to hop early. —Yours obediently, EX-HAULIER.
"Dea rth of Curates."
"Dea rth of Curates." Sensational Allegations. To the Editor of the "Rhondda Leader." Sir,—I notice in your last issue you publish extracts from the Church Maga- zine of Clydach Vale, written by the vicar of that parish, in which he com- plains of the dearth of curates, and that it is nearly impossible to get a hard- working, earnest man as curate. Un- fortunately, I must admit he is correct. They are few and far between; but there are a few still to be found in the Rhon- dda. The strange part of it is this—that where these few labour, their work is not recognised or cared for. The good they try to do is frequently counterbalanced by the actions of certain cliques which are to be found in every church. The clergy- man, to please or get into the good graces of these few, would be required to preach a religion made specially to suit their views; and what man with any respect for Christ, himself, or humanity would descend to this, especially when supposed to be labouring in Christ's vineyard? The fact remains that this is so, and because curates object to this kind of treatment, eveyrthing connected with their church is made to go wrong; their every action is deliberately misunderstood; their char- acter blackened to the congregation, and every effort made to hound them from their curacies. The worst of this state of things is that the actions of these cliques seem to be upheld by their vicars, so what else can be expected but that there should be a shortage of curates in the Rhondda? Curates are domineered over by the so-called Christians who form the cliques. The vicars, falling in with their views (perhaps afraid of losing their so-called patronage), compel the curates to bend to these Christians, or look out for a fresh place. The congregations are thus penalised by the loss of a man they like for the sake of a few. There have been curates in these Valleys labouring hard for their Master; good nreachers of strong personal character at whom no one could throw stones. Yet these have been ousted from their places by the actions of a few persons professing Christianity. Were every vicar of the type of the Clydach Vale vicar, these Pharisees would be deprived of the power they hold at present, and accusations made against their clergy would have to be proved and not taken for granted, as seems to be done at present. The laws protecting (?) the subordinate clergy should be revised and not allowed to remain as they are at present, as it's all fairplay for one and the opposite for the others as it now stands.—I remain, A CHAMPIONER OF OUTRAGED JUSTICE.
