Porth Police Court. Thursday.—Before Messrs. T. P. Jen- kins, David Thomas, Wm. Evans, Alder- man E. H. Davies, Alderman W. H. Mathias, Dr. E. N. Davies and Dr. Ivor Davies. STREET BETTING AT PORTH. Albert T. Elson and Herbert Cooper, colliers, Porth, were charged- with loiter- ing in Alier-Rhondda Road, Porth, for the purposes of betting. Mr. David Reels (Messrs. W. R. Davies and. Co., Ponty- pridd) appeared for Cooper, and Mr. W. T. Davies, Porth, for Elson. P.C.'s Ryan and James detailed the movements of the defendants on 30th April, when they were seen taking slips of paper near the Tynewydd Hotel. Later in the day, both defendants were appre- hended in a private room at the Tynewydd Hotel, and slips of paper were found in one of the defendants' cap. When taken to the Police Station, t- 1. 8s. Did., clip- book and a racing paper— The Sporting Chronicle "—were found upon Elsjon; whilst sum of 1<. 8yd., ti^ "Raising Outlook, and a.klip bt,papar.beaming the names of 47 hor&a-; were found upon Cbdpejp. Mr. W. T. Davies (to P.O. Ryan): Is the Sporting Chronicle" a sporting P Viae 70 I see a note on the Budget, cricket and football. Is that sporting?— No answer. If I had this paper in my pocket, would you arrest me ?—Ye. if I saw you taking slips (lalighter'). Elson, on oath, rigorously denied having made or received, any bets, but Cooper admitted having had betting transactions with Elson. Mr. W. T. Davies said that Cooper, in order to get out oi the mess, had put the whole blame on Elson. Mr. Ree-s, for Cooper, said that the police had a pretty shrewd idea who were the men who carried on betting tran- sactions in the streets, and both officers had admitted, in reply to his questions, that they had no knowledge or Cooper being engaged in this practice previous to this charge. The police at Porth were well organised, and in his (Mr. Rees') opinion it was inconceivable that Cooper could have carried on these transactions without the police coming to know some- thing of it. Mr. T. P. Jenkins (chairman) said both defendants were equally guilty, but a distinction had to be drawn between them. Elson, who was the older defen- dant, was fined £10 and Cooper, who the presiding magistrate characterised as a boy, was fined t5. THE EXCISEMAN'S TRAP. Robert Allen, watch and clock repairer, Porth, was summoned for selling silver plate without a. license. Mr. Finucane, Inland Revenue Super- visor, Pontypridd, prosecuted. Inland Revenue Officer Fredk. Baxter said that lie. visited defendant's shop on the 6th March last, and handing him a watch, asked the charge for repairing Nimc. Defendant, after examining the watch, said 5s. 6d., whereupon witness asked him if he had any new watches for sale. Defendant replied that lie had only just removed to the premises, but he had some new watches at his own house, and could have them if witness waited. Wit- ness consented, and defendant sent a girl to fetch the! watches. When she returned, witness purchased a watch valued -at ,32s. 6d., and was given a white metal chain, together with ten years' guarantee. Mr. T. P. Jenkins: Would he require a license for repairing watches? Mr. Finucane: No, your Worship. Defendant said that he had only acted as agent for Mr. Kuf, Porth, and that the original guarantee was signed by that person. Mr. Finucane said that defendant was equally guilty if lie only took orders for another. A fine of 15s., including costs, was imposed. PITCH AND TOSS AT TONYREFAIL. Geo. Moody, John Jones, E. J. Selby, Chas. Hoare, J. Anstie, Alf. Mood v. Wm! Barnet, T'heo. Griffiths, and Wm. J. Beynon were summoned for gaming on a public place on Sunday. Mr. J. Phillips, Pontypridddefended. P.O. Davies said that on Sunday after- noon, 25th ult., in company with P.C. Reed, he kept a watch, on a field near Coedely Colliery, Tonyrefail, where defen- dants were playing a, game ef pitch and toss. When witness and Reed arranged to surround defendants, a scout gave a fgna I, and defendants ran into witness' direction and were caught. Witness added that complaints of persons playing nitch and toss were very general, and the reate.stdifficulty was experienced in bringing them to book, as they kept scouts posted everywhere. They even kept watch on witness' house, and to reach them unawares the police had to take a very circuitous route. P.C. Reed corroborated. The defendants denied playing pitch and toss, and stated that some of them were bird-nesting, whilo others were making whistles out of bluebells. Defendants were fined 5s. each. I
