IBritish Widows Assurance…
British Widows Assurance Company. The quarterly meeting of the Porth and District Branch of the above company was held last Thursday at the Park and Dare Workmen's Institute, Treorehy. The proceedings were prefaced by a knife and fork tea, which was richly enjoyed. In the absence of Mr. W. H. Owen, Ynys- wen, the appointed chairman, the Rev. O. Waldo James, D.D., Porth, was voted to the chair. The report for the year ending 31st December, 1908, stated that in the indus- trial branch the premium income amoun- ted to E46,347, an increase of t2,535 over the year 1907. The claims of the branch amounted to £ 17,688, representing the moderate ratio of 38 per cent, of the premium income. A gratifying progress was recorded in the assurance tea depart- ment of the industrial branch, whilst a corresponding increase was shown in the premium income in the ordinary branch. The average sum assured retained at the company's risk under the Dolicies in force in this branch on 31st December, 1908, was £ 76. The aggregate premium' income of both branches for the year was t47 618 whilst the total amount of claims paid from the establishment of the company up to 31st December, 1908, was £ 68,673. A valuation of the company s liabilities to its policyholders as at 31st December, 1908, is being made, and falls to be pre- sented to the Board of Trade before 30th September next. The statements made in previous reports shew that these liabili- ties are amply covered by the deposit of £ 20,000 with the Government, the guarantee fund of t5,000 standing in the names of two trustees on behalf of the policyholders, and the other assets amounting to R8,658 included in the balance sheet of the life assurance funds —irrespective of the further security- afforded by the uncalled capital of the company and shareholders' fund. In common with other similar institu- tions, continued the report, the company had felt the effects of the general decline in employment during 1908, but never- theless, the directors weive pleased to report a substantial increase in the premium income. The Rev. O. Waldo James, D.D., pro- posed the toast, The British Widows Assurance Co., Ltd. and said that the company was considered by its rivals to be a growing company. He had himself been an assurance agent, and he was in deep sympathy with the work of such institutions. As he looked round on the faces of the agents present, he thought that they were a. fine lot of fellows who ought to do well for the company. He f wished every success; to Mr. J. P. Wil- liams (superintendent, Porth) and to Mrs. Williams. As for Mr. Williams, lie was a man of moral value, and above all, he had a backbone (cheers). He also wished the success of the agents. Continuing, he said that the people of the Rhondda, recently had the honour of a, Royal visit. The Princess and her hus- band had a grand reception and a "golden" time. The people had been loyal, but what had they received in return? The agents were not thus. for they were going to give gold as well as to receive it (hear, hear). To insure was a political duty which the people, owed to the State. It was also a social duty, and it was a religious duty, for they who did not insure and provide for their families were infidels. It afforded him the greatest pleasure to propose the success of the British Widows Assurance Company (cheers). Mr. Roderick Morgan seconded, and said it gave him great pleasure to find that the gentleman who was at the head said it gave him great pleasure to find that the gentleman who was at the head of affairs in Wales under the company was a Welshman (hear, hear). It was said that the Welsh were business men by nature (laughter). Welshmen to-day were at the head of all great institutions; as a matter of fact, one of the greatest financiers in the country was a Welshman (cheers). He knew that the company were anxious to transact business in a straightforward manner (hear, hear). Most of those present were young, and they all appeared to be men of vigour, who ought to do well. Competition, he con- tinued, was, just as keen among assurance companies as among other businesses, so that to succeed it was imperative they should throw themselves into the work. He urged the agents to be faithful to the company and to themselves, and never to forget that the strongest weapon they possessed was a strong moral character (hear, hear). Mr. D. Davies (South Wales manager) responded. He stated that they had en- listed the best men, and, generally speak- ing, the South Wales staff were doing splendidly. They had increased their business 60 per cent.. and the Rhondda superintendent, Mr. J. P. Williams, had assisted very materially towards that end (cheers). Because of their success they were being attacked by a few people who had no respect for the truth. The speaker quoted several Press extracts, all of which testified to the straightforwardness and strong position of. the company. He further declared that Mr. Winston Churchill wanted the word" assurance" printed on the blotting-paper of every- business man. They wanted it printed on every packet of tea which entered the home of the industrial classes (applause). Mr. J. P. Williams also responded, and said he was glad to say that he had paid hundreds of pounds in claims in the Valley, not one of which had ever been denied. He hoped that the agents would do their duty to himself and to their company. He then read the following letter from the general manager, Mr. R. Sewell: London, Juily 15th, 1909. Dear Sir,—I shall be glad if at your quarterly meeting you will express to your staff my keen satisfaction at the results they have attained during the current" year, and offer them" my heartiest wishes for their continued success. If they will but keep up the strenuous efforts they have made in the past six1 months, there is no reason why Porth should not figure at the head of the districts in South Walesi for increase. SEWEILL. The following prizes were then awarded by Mr. D. Davies :—For best collection in the whole district: 1st prize, Mr. Isaac Davies (Cwmparc); 2nd, Mr. Howell Jones (Porth) 3rd, Mr. W. Rowlands (Porth). For best collection by spare- time agents: Messrs. Harris, Dd. Evans, J. Morris, and Raymond. Mr. Evans (Porth district) won va cheque for kl 10s., a pocket book and a fountain pen; whilst Mr. D. Bumford (Cwnmarc) won a cheque for zCl 10s. Messrs. J. Broad and D. Bumford so won prizes of fountain pens for biggest increases. Prizes were sent from the head office to Messrs, H. Jones, D. Eivans, D. Bumford, and J. Evans. The next toast, The Porth District of the British Widows Assurance Com- pany, Ltd. was proposed by Mr. Tom Evans, and seconded by Mr. W. Lawrence. This was responded to by Messrs. R. W. Rees (assistant superintendent) and W. Rowlands (district agent, Porth). Vocal items were contributed during the evening by Miss Lewis (Cwmparcf and Mr. D. J. Thomas, and a. violin solo by Mr. L. Jenkins, accompanied by Madam M. J enkin-Huo:he.s. The meeting wound up with the singing of Hen Wlacl fy NhacIau." Mr. D. J. Biumford was responsible for all the arrangements.
