Late Mrs Eliza Evans, Treherbert The funeral of the late Mrs. Eliza Evans, Smith Cottage, Treherbert (whose death we announced last week), took place on Monday. The Revs. J. Pethian Davies, J. D. Evans (vicar), and R. T. Howells, B.A., conducted a service at the house before the body was conveyed to Treorchy Cemetery, where the interment took place. The funeral procession con- sisted of gentlemen only. who rode in seven coaches behind the hearse. An- other service was held at the graveside, the officiating ministers being the Revs. Canon Lewis (Pentre), J. Pethian Davies, J. D. Evans (vicar of Treherbert), and R. T. Howells. The following is the list of coaches —First coach-Messrs. Caleb Evans (son), Geraldus Jones (grandson), Morgan Emmanuel and Capt. Whalquest (sons-in-law); second coach—Messrs. H. Evans and J. Morgan (nephews), George and Richard Evans (cousins), W. R. Davies (Treherbert), and Mr. Ivens (re- presenting Messrs. Morgan, Bruce, Nicholas, and James, solicitors, Ponty- Late Mrs. ELIZA EVANS.

With Fdged Tools at the Theatre Royal next Week. Next week at the Theatre Royal will be produced for the first time in Tony- pandy Henry Seton Merriman's great work, With Edged Tools," which was made into a play last year by Mr. H. Armitage, and which has enjoyed the greatest success during the past year. Henry Seton Merriman is one of the most popular British authors, and With Edged Tools is undoubtedly his most popular work, it having been read by no less than two million people_in the British Isles alone.' It is amazing that an author of the genius of Merriman should have escaped dramatisation before, but so it is, and With Edged Tools is the first of his works to be put upon the stage. Pentre Colliery Dispute. An accident during last week led to a. stoppage of work on Monday last. A steam pipe conveying steam to the upper shaft and engine burst about half-past eight in the morning; the fan engine was consequently incapacitated, with the result that the men underground were obliged to cease work for the day. The hauliers found on Friday evening that their pay was short of half a day's wage, which had been deducted for the above day. This action caused discontent, and the hauliers refused to work on Monday. A mass meeting was held, Mr. Ben Davies (miners' agent) being present. A depu- tation waited upon the manager, Mr. Williams, but it seemed that terms could not be discussed unless the men con- tinued work. On Tuesday and Wednes- day, the men worked as usual, while a conference took nlace with the manage- ment. Another meeting was held on Wednesday night. D'aywage men and labourers-are also involved in the trouble, their wages having been cropped of half a turn.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1909. The Late Mr. C. Edmunds, M.E., Pentre. Biographical Sketch and Funeral A brief report of the sad death of Mr. Caswallon Edmunds, late colliery manager, Pentre, at the comparatively early age of 57 years, appeared in our columns last week. Mr. Edmunds was one of the thirteen children of Samuel and Johanna Ed- munds, Gyfeillion, Pontypridd, and was born on August 14th, 1852. The name of Samuel Edmunds will live for many years in the memory of the Rhondda inhabitants who recollect the first colliery explosion at Walter Coffin's Dinas Col- liery on January 1st, 1844, when twelve men were killed. Sam Hendreforgan," as he was called, was a well-known per- sonality a self-educated man who spent his few leisure hours in teaching music and astronomy. When the call came for a. brave man to descend the shaft soon after the explosion, and while the smoke' was still thick, the first volunteer was "Sam Hendreforgan." He descended by hemp rope wound by a horse, the sur- rounding mass of people crying, and praying for his safety. The first person he met was Mr. Daniel Thomas, the manager—father of the late Mr. Edmund Thomas, Maindy Hall, and grandfather of Mr. Daniel Thomas, M.E., Ynys House, Ton-Pentre. This brave feat has never been excelled, and Mr. Samuel Edmunds was fortunate to return àlive. The Late Mr. C. EDMUNDS, M.E. On June 18th, 1856, there was another explosion at Messrs. Insoles and Sons' colliery at Cymmer, when 114 men and boys perished. Among those who suc- cumbed to the deadly afterdamp was the brave hero of the previous explosion. Mr. Caswallon Edmunds was only four years of age when his father died. It speaks volumes for Mrs. Johanna Edmunds and the children that each one was reared with many advantages over children of ¡ wealthy people. The deceased was a keen and intelligent student of mining from I boyhood, and applied himself successfully I to the study of science. After working j at Gyfeillion for many years, he moved I to Heolfach, and in 1891 to Pentre Col- liery, where he was overman for a period of about eighteen months. In 1882 he gained a First Class Certificate as col- liery manager at his first attempt in the examination-a rare feat in those days. Other' certificates in other sciences, elec- tricity and magnetism, and mathematics and ambulance work were also won by him. He was also a good literary student, having read and studied care- fully most of the best books obtainable, so that he was always a keen debater on a wide range of subjects. He was held in high respect both by his employers— Messrs. Cory Brothers—and by his work- men and officials at Pentre. He had held the office of colliery manager at Pentre for about seventeen years, succeeding the late Mr. John Williams, when the latter removed to Tynybedw. Mr. Edmunds' success as manager may be gauged from the fact that there has not been a single serious accident at the Pentre Colliery for many years. The only one of the thirteen children of Samuel and Johanna. Edmunds now living is Mrs. James R. Evans, whose home for thirty years has been in America, and for the last twenty- one years in Scranton. She arrived in Pentre just a week or so before her bro- ther died, having heard by cablegram from her son that her only brother was seriously ill. As a citizen, Mr. Edmunds was always

Ynyshir and Wattstown. One of the best of the season's attrac- tions locally is the Ynyshir Ambulance Brigade concert to be held on the 17th of this month. The object, which is that of defraying the cost of the uniforms, is a worthy one and deserves support. A distinguished concert party has been engaged for the occasion. The erection of the new Calvinistio Methodist Chapel—Moriah—at Ynyshir, to take the place of the old edifice- Tabernacle-is nearing completion, and promises to be a. handsome building. In addition to the very successful eistedd- fod held recently, a brilliant bazaar is to take place later on to raise funds. A very popular movement at Watts- town is the presentation to Dr. Flack, M.B., who recently left that place to take up a good appointment at Norwich. The doctor had made countless friends locally by his democratic sympathies and his keen interest in all that affected the .people. A strong and representative com- mittee has the arrangements in hand, and a good meeting is looked forward to. Mr. D. J. Ryan, Treorchy, has in hand the designing and execution of the address. The presentation will take place at the end of this month. The workmen and people of Wattstown are congratulating themselves on soon becoming the possessors of a Institute. The building operations are going well ahead, and the roof will soon be on. A good set-off has been given to the move- ment by donations of L500 each from the Crawshay Bailey Estate and the United National Collieries, Ltd. The Institute will fill a long-felt and crying need in the place. The Rev. Christmas Jones, of Penrhyn, North Wales has accepted the call to the Welsh Baptist Church, and will com- mence his ministry the beginning of the new year. He is a powerful preacher, and his advent is looked forward to with great eagerness.

In fact, many an injured miner at the Pentre Colliery re- ceived first-aid treatment at the hands of the manager. The funeral took place on Friday after- noon, the deceased's wish to -be buried with his mother at Glyntaff Cemetery being respected and carried out by the relatives. The funeral was for gentlemen only, proceeding in carnages by road. The Rev. Daniel Davies, of Nazareth Church, officiated, and referred to the many excellent qualities of deceased, and especially to his charitable disposition.
