New Empire, Tonypandy. Formal Opening. Guests Entertained at Luncheon. Over a hundred guests sat down to an excellently catered luncheon to celebrate the formal opening of the New Empire Theatre of Varieties, Tonypandy, on Fri- day last. The capacious stage of the new musical hall had, for the nonce, with the assistance of a profusion of flowers and other decorations, been transformed into a sumptuous banqueting chamber that would have done credit to the Frascati and other equally reputable palaces of fashionable restauranteurs. Mr. Leonard W. Llewelyn, M.E. (managing director of the Cambrian Combine), preeifled, sup- ported by the Rev. D. T. R. James (vicar of Llwynypia), Alderman W. H. Mathias, J.P., District Councillors W. D. Wight, M.E., D. C. Evans, Dr. A. G. Tribe, J. D. Williams, J.P., Thos. Griffiths, M.E., J.P., Griffith Evans. Tom Evans, L. P. Griffiths, and Thomas Harris. Messrs. Dd. Roberts and Wm. Morgan (chairman and secretary of the Empire Syndicate), Dr. J. R. Armstrong (director), Mr. J. T. Jenkins, Porth (architect), Mr. E. Evans (builders), Mr. Young (of the London Syndicate), Mr. W. J. Jones (Rhondda Council's Surveyor), &c. Mr. WILLIAM MORGAN. The loyal toasts having been honoured, the Chairman proposed the toast of the founders of what he termed this magni- ficent palace," and said he considered it a great honour to be asked to preside over the first function held in the new hall. He did not know why his name was down to propose this particular toast, unless it was due to Mr. Wm. Morgan's sense of humour, who wished to proclaim the fact that he was not a shareholder. He had been asked to take shares, but not having a great deal of money at his command—(laughter)—he had refused. He now wished that he had invested in this magnificent building, and the probabilities were that he would soon have more money (laughter and applause). Mid-Rhondda viewed the new Empire with particular pleasure, and the founders had done them honour to erect such a palace in the heart of the Metropolis (laughter). In times gone by, they had had to go to the suburbs, such as Pentre and Porth, to get their entertainment, and the money earned in the district was being spent elsewhere. Everyone now recognised that Tonypandy was the metropolis of the Rhondda—(laughter and applause)—and splendid shops, bearing the names of tradesmen known over the whole of the United Kingdom, that had been erected in the town, was a proof that these had recognised the fact that money was to be made here. As one of the residents, and also President of the Chamber, of Trade, he welcomed the enterprise of the pro- moters and wished it every success (ap- plause). Dr. J. K. Armstrong, ireorchy, re- sponded, and said that the large gather- ing that had assembled at their invitation was a proof that they approved of the scheme. The promoters were convinced that Tonypandy was the best centre for such a building, and he hoped that the performances that would be given here would be equal to what,, they would get in Cardiff or London (applause). No ex- pense had been spared in the erection of the building, and one of the architects occupied a high standard in the theatrical world. It had been let to a syndicate of high standing, which was a guarantee that the performances would be of a high character. Mr. David Roberts (chairman of the building syndicate) submitted The Lon- don Syndicate." The new Empire, he said, was situated in an advantageous position, and in the heart of a great population &nd if it did not prove a success, it would be the syndicate's fault. He was of the opinion that the syndicate would secure the heartiest support of the whole dis- trict, and would thus be able to cater for such quality that people would have no need to go to Cardiff or elsewhere. Mr. Young, on behalf of the London Syndicate, assured them that that body was in a position to secure the best talent available, and they would do all in their power towards that end. He had no fear they would be pleasantly surprised at the companies that would come to Mid- Rhondda. They had already done their best to get the best talent available, but that was a difficult matter, as the date of opening was so very uncertain, and the fact that the leading artistes booked ahead for so many years. Mr. William Morgan, in submitting the toast of The Architects and Builders," said he regretted that Mr. Ward was unable to be with them that day. The construction of the hall was a good testi- mony to the intellect of the architects. Mr. Ward was a gentleman of the widest experience, both in London and the pro- vinces, in theatrical architecture; whilst with regard to his colleague, Mr. J. T. Jenkins, Porth-he was glad to see that gentleman's father in the gathering—he was sure that Mr. Jenkins, senior, was proud of the fact that his son had had such a large share in the construction of that hall (applause). The site of the hall, proceeded Mr. Morgan, was, up to a few months ago, occupied by eyesores in the shape of three tumble-down cottages, but thanks to the ingenuity of Messrs. Ward and Jenkins, the cottages had been sub- stituted by a building of which he was particularly proud. The greatest use had been made of the space at their command. Underneath the stage was an engine of the latest type of 42 horse-power, and a dynamo, which cost £ 960. They had also in the front of the stage what no other theatre or music hall in the Valley pos- sessed-a -ifreproof curtain, whilst the whole building was fitted throughout with the latest water appliances in case of fire, which had been satisfactorily tested by the Rhondda Council, and there were, moreover, separate exits constructed on the most modern pattern. In his opinion. the most responsible part of the business was in the hands of the syndicate, who had taken the building on a 21 years lease. He had tried to impress upon them that they were to cater for the most intelligent portion of the country, and it would be their aim that every perform- ance given at that house would be such that no husband or father of children need have any scruples with regard to bringing his children to witness them (hear, hear). Even that morning, when the question of engaging a certain pugilist had arisen, he had insisted that the less of such performances in that hall were mest (applause). On the other hand, the best talent had been and would be engaged for the performances. In conclusion, Mr. Morgan declared he was proud to see such a large representation of the Rhondda Council present. He certainly thought that, at any rate, they were not antago- nistic to the enterprise, otherwise they would have not graced the proceedings with their presence (applause). Mr. J. I. Jenkins (architect) and Mr. Evans (contractor) responded. Mr. Young proposed the toast of "The Visitors," in the unavoidable absence of Mr. Burney. He remarked that the Tony- pandy Syndicate and the London Syndi- cate were delighted to see the visitors there, and hoped to see them as patrons of the hall (applause). Mr. J. D. Williams, in responding, said it had struck him that the directors ought to have this function annually. He thought it would not be a bad idea (laughter). In referring back forty years, Mr. Williams said a great alteration had taken place in the Valley, but he knew of no portion of the Valley which had improved so much as Mid-Rhondda. He was extremely pleased, to see the Empire in Tonypandy, and hoped it would be a benefit to the district. Mr. Wm. Morgan had taken great interest in it, and he (Mr. Williams) thought the syndicate had proved} very fortunate in securing the services of such a man as Mr. Morgan. He thanked the directors for the kind invitation to the luncheon, which he had enjoyed (applause). Mr. R. A. Lewis (Lloyds Bank) also responded. At this juncture Mr. D. Roberts, on behalf of the Empire Syndicate, made a small presentation to Mr. Wm. Morgan. It was through Mr. Morgan's instru- mentality, said the speaker, that they had had a new lease from Lord Dunraven, and everything had gone on in the most amicable way. All the arrangements had been brought about by Mr. Morgan, and they had decided he should not do this for nothing, so they were going to make him a little presentation. He had asked Mr. Morgan for a blank cheque, which had now been filled in, and he was very proud to hand to Mr. Morgan the cheque on behalf of himself and colleagues (ap- plause). Also he had great pleasure in handing Mr. Morgan an auctioneer'S ivory hammer, silver-mounted, inscribed as fol- lows :—" To Mr. William Morgan in recog- nition of his valuable services, November, 1909." (Cheers). In replying, Mr. Morgan said that his work had been a labour of love, and he was glad that they had been able to pro- vide a suitable hall for that neighbour- hood. He thanked them all for their kind gifts (applause). Mr. D. W. James (solicitor) next pro- posed the toast of The Secretary (Mr. Wm. Morgan), and eulogised that gentle- man, attributing the Empire to Mr. Mor- gan's business acumen. Mr. Morgan had told the speaker that he had many times awoke in the middle of the night with the Empire on the brain (laughter). Mr. Morgan suitably replied. The toast at the bottom of the list was that of "The Press," proposed by Major Hill-Male, and responded to bv Mr. Geo. Warrington ("Western Mail "). At 3 o'clock, the Empire was formally opened by Miss Annie Morgan, who per- formed this ceremony with the use of a gold key, supplied by the Mirror of Gems, Tonypandy. A programme of music was rendered, contributed to by the Mid-Rhondda Orpheus Glee Society (conductor, Mr. Emrys Richards) Miss Phyllis Novinsky, the remarkable child violinist, who com- pletely captured her auditors; and Ap Tydfil, violinist. A series of living pic- tures were shown on the Empireoscope.

The acci- dent happened on November 29th at the Maindy Colliery. Ystrad, when a stone fell on the man's hand. Mr. Atkin, K.C., and Mr. Hill Kelly appeared for the appellant workman, and Mr. C. A. Russell and Mr. Vaughan Wil- liams represented the Coal Compaitp. The appeal was dismissed.
