He conducted the young people's prayer meetings on Saturday evenings for upwards of thirty years. The funeral took place on Wednesday, Tre- orchy being the scene of interment. On Saturday evening last, the Rev. T. Eynon Davies, London, delivered his very interesting lecture, John Jones," to a large gathering at Bethania. The Rev. D. Rhagfyr Jones occupied the chair. Cricket Club Supper.—The first annual supper of the Ogmore Valley Cricket Club was held on Wednesday night, the 17th inst., at the headquarters, the Ogmore Valley Hotel. The genial host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Rees Thomas, provided an excellent spread, which was presided over by Dr. R. A. Williams, J.P., and between ÕO and 60 sat down. Amongst those pre- sent were Dr. B. Jones, and Messrs. Dd. Llewellyn, T. Llewellyn, W. Hawken and Heal-Brown. After supper, a smoking concert was held, presided over by Mr. D. Llewellyn, when musical items were provided by the following local artistes: —Messrs. Geo. Morgan, Gwilym Kinsey, Geo. David, Dave Walters and Arthur Evans. Mr. Joe Woods ably filled the role of pianist. Reference was made to the good financial condition of the club but funds were proposed for the purpose of clearing the out-field of the new ground, and building a pavilion. It was suggested that this object might be achieved by holding a series of whist drives, and by getting a benefit concert by the Minstrels. A pleasing function was now performed by the chairman, viz., the presentation of bats to the bats- men holding the best averages for last season. Mr. Ivor Evans received the bat for the first eleven, and Mr. Tom Webster for the second eleven. The bats were presented to the club by Messrs. T. Redshaw and D. Ll. Richards respec- tively. Lecture.—A very interesting and highly instructive lecture on Rescue Work in Mines" was delivered by Mr. Henry Davies, County Mining Instructor, at the Wesleyan Schoolroom on Thursday night last. There was an excellent attendance, the chair being occupied by Mr. John Howells (in the unavoidable absence of Alderman Llewellyn, J.P.). At the out- set, Mr. Davies emphasised the need of p safe timbering, since a large percentage of the accidents in mines was caused by falls. Dealing with explosions, he men- tioned the great difficulties that rescuers had to contend with, but these were being minimised by the invention of rescue apparatus. The lecturer exhibited two models of this apparatus, and showed, by means of lantern views, how rescue work was carried out. At the close, the Chair- man presented the certificates gained by the successful students at the last Mining, Mathematics, and Ambulance examina- tions. The large number gained plainly showed the excellent work that is oeing done in the Evening Classes. Political Meeting.—An enthusiastic meeting in support of Mr. Vernon Hartshorn, the adopted Labour candidate for Mid-Glamorgan, was held on Monday night at the Tynewydd Schools. There was a large number present, and the chair was taken by Mr. Tom Lucas (miners' agent). The Chairman apologised for the absence, through illness, of Mr. Tom Richards, M.P., and a resolution, approv- ing of the excellent work of the Labour Party in the House of Commons, and pledging itself to support Mr. Hartshorn, was proposed by Mr. D. J. Thomas, and seconded by Mr. Edwin Jenkins. Speeches followed by Mr. Hartshorn, Mr. William Harris, Abertillery, and Mr. C. B. Stanton. Aberdare, all of whom em- phasised the need of a stronger Labour Party in Parliament. At the close, numerous ouestions were asked, but the resolution was carried by an overwhelm- ing majority. What may be described as a delightful entertainment to music lovers was the concert held under the. auspices of the Llwyncelyn Orchestra on Thursday even- last, at St. Luke's Schoolroom. The con- ductor, Mr.. R. Worden, has certainly spared no effort in raising the status of his orchestra, and that his labour has been rewarded is very evident to lovers of good music, as was shown on Thursday evening. The schoolroom was packed and many were turned back, unable to obtain a seat or standing room. The orchestra were assisted by some of the. best local artistes, while the accompanists were Mr. Beth Griffiths and Mr. D. J. Isaac. In the absence of Mr. J. W. Hutchinson, the Rev. Wm. Thomas presided. After a few appropriate, words by the chair- man, the orchestra gave a magnificent rendering of Strauss," which was fol- lowed by a solo by Mr. Tom Richards, of Cymmer, who is a very promising young tenor. The valse, "Danua Wellin, was. next played by the band, its bright, quick movement giving lustre to the entertain- ment. Miss Jones (soprano), of Peny- graig, captured all hearts with her ren- dition of the Italian salad, II Bacio," and an encore was loudly demanded. She responded with Macheroni's For all Eternity." Mr. W. D. Lloyd (the Welsh Signor Foli) sang to great effect. The overture, Pique Dame," brought forth loud encomiums from the audience. Mr. D. J. Rees, a local comedian greatly enhanced his popularity, being demanded time after time. Miss Annie Jacobs also gave a pianoforte solo that could not fail to please the most critical ear. Among other items contributed by the orchestra were "Light Cavalry" "and "Amblin Ambrose," two items that were accorded rounds of applause. Additional solos were also contributed by Miss Jones, I Messrs. W. D. Lloyd, Tom Richards, D. J. Rees and W. Morgan. The entertain- ment terminated with the National Anthem. Clydach Vale.
