and thermometer, free. H 5102 Ferndale. An accident which proved fatal occurred at Messrs. D. Davis and Sons' No. 1 Colliery, Ferndale. A young man named David Davies, of Commercial St., Blaenllechau, was riding on the Bute journey (the regular rider not being in work), when the rope was jerked off one of the sheaves in going around a bend in the road, and threw him off. He fell under the trams, and was dragged by the trams for about 60 yards. The un- fortunate man received terrible injuries, from which he expired. At the inquest, which was held at the Salisbury Hotel, a verdict of Accidental death was re- turned. On the day of the funeral, work was stopped at No. 1 Colliery half-an- hour before the usual time. A very large number of workmen attended the funeral. Deceased was buried at Llanwonno Ceme- tery. The funeral took place last Thursday of Miss Mary Benjamin, daughter of Mr. Evan Benjamin, of Rhondda Terrace, Ferndale. Miss Benjamin had resided for some considerable time in London, and had only been ill for a few days. The corpse was conveyed to Ferndale, and the funeral procession was preceded by the choir of Penuel Chapel.

Hockey. PONTYPRIDD COUNTY SCHOOL GIRLS v. PORTH HIGHER GRADE, A very pretty exhibition of hockey was witnessed in the above match on Satur- day afternoon at the School Ground, Porth. The visitors' captain won the toss and elected to play down the slope. For the first ten minutes the visitors played a strong attacking game, and the home- sters were fortunate that their team in- cluded a few cool defenders, especially the centre half, Bessie Jones, and right back, Lizzie Evans. Afterwards the game was more even, the. home forwards fre- quently going right up the field, display- ing good combination and excellent judg- ment. The attack on the right wing by Nellie Ross and Rebecca Evans was delightful to watch. Persistence was rewarded by a splendid eoal scored by Blodwen Rees, as the result of a difficult centre by the left wing. Half-time arrived with the score unchanged. In the second period of the game, the home girls were clearly the better, but their shooting when inside the circle was not good enough to snatch more thali one goal scored by Mary Annie Evans. It must be admitted that the Ponty-- pridd girls played a hard game, and their defence was excellent throughout. The duties of referee were carried out by Mr. Thomas, Porth. After the match, both teams enjoyed a tea at the school.

Ogmore Vale. Liberal Meeting.—A meeting of the Ogmore Vale Liberal and Labour Asso- ciation was held last Tuesday night at Bethlehem (W.B.) Vestry. The business was to select officers for the coming year, and the following gentlemen were elected —President, Alderman Wm. Llewellyn, J.P.; vice-president, Mr. Wm. Jones; treasurer, Mr. Jeremiah Lewis; and secretary, Mr. T. W. Job. Representa- tives were also appointed to attend the Central Conference of Mid-Glamorgan Liberal and Labour Association to be held shortly ai Port Talbot. Cantata.—A very successful sacred can- tata, entitled The World's Redemp- tion," was performed on Wednesay night, the 24th ult., by the choir of Wesley Church, assisted by' local friends. Mr. Harry Osborne deserves to be highly com- plimented for the fine performance of his choir before a large audience, who signi- fied their approval in frequent outbursts of apolause. The principal parts were taken by the following artistes: Soprano, Miss Rees, Pontycymmer; con- tralto, Miss Mary Richards, Rhymney; tenor, Mr. Wm. Rees, Kenfig Hill; ana bass, Mr. Tom Jones, Pen coed; while Mr. T. D. Jones, Morriston, presided at the piano. It is anticipated that a good sum will be realised towards the trust funds. The meeting was ably presided over by Mr. F. Pevott. Hockey.—After effecting a well-deserved draw at Cardiff against the Y.M.C.A. on Wednesday, the shoppers were at home to Swansea on Thursday, and won by 3 goals to 1, the scorers being Ivor Harry, Will Thomas and Ben Richards. On Saturday, Ogmore entertained Nantymoel at the Crossing Field. A very pretty and hard-fought game was fought, ending in a win for the homesters by 4—0. The scorers were Clemetts, Cole (2), and Wil- liams. It is only fair, to state that Nanty- moel played one short throughout, and were thus handicapped. The return galne will be eagerly waited for by both sides. Conservative Meeting.—A well-attended meeting under the auspices of the Mid- Glamorgan Conservative Association was held on Thursday night, the 25th ult., at the Aber School to support the can- didature of Mr. H. Godfrey Williams at the next election. The meeting was addressed by Mr. M. Campbell Johnstone, who spoke chiefly on Tariff Reform. At the close, numerous questions were asked, but in a very orderly manner. With regard to the vote of thanks the speaker met with an unusual and perhaps unique experience. The vote was proposed by Dr. R. A. Williams J.P. (the chairman), seconded by Mr. John Hodgson, a Radical, and supported by Mr, E. Edwards, a Socialist. New Chapel.—The inaugural meetings of the new English Calvinistic Methodist Chapel (Presbyterian Church of Wales) were held on Sunday last. Services were held in the morning and evening at the Old Workmen's Hall, and in the after- noon at Hermon (Welsh C.M.) Chapel, sermons being preached at each by the Rev. E. R. Harries, Aberavon. Juvenile Choir.—On Friday night, a concert under the auspices of the Juvenile Choir was given at the Wesleyan School- room. The chair was taken by Mr. Wm. Lewis before a good gathering, the pro- ceeds being devoted towards defraying the exoenses of the choir to Newport on Saturday. The programme was a good one and consisted of solos by members of the choir and friends, and also choruses by the choir, among which was The Liang of the Forge," the test piece at Newport. The journey of the choir to Newport Semi-National Eisteddfod on Saturday was not in vain, for they suc- ceeded in capturing the first prize, Barry Boys being seconds The prize was seven guineas and a beautiful clock-set for the conductor, Mr. W. H. Capel. In the adjudication, Mr. Coleridge Taylor did not hesitate in awarding the prize to Ogmore, remarking that he had never before seen a choir so well controlled. This is the third Semi-National success for the choir, and the 22nd success out of 27 competitions—a fine record. Mr. Cartel has hopes of winning a National, and if he does at Colwyn Bay next year, it will not be more than he deserves. Draughts.—On Saturday, the 20th ult., the Ogmore Draughts Team went to Garw to play the Pontycymmer team, and won handsomely by 35t points to 12t. Ap- pended are the Ogmore scores:-Evan Rees, 4; Wm. Nicholas, 2; J. Rees, 3; J. Richards, 3; J. Thomas, 4; T. Ware- ham., 3: Tom Waters, 3t; A. Clare, 3; H. Osborne. 3 J. Moss, It T. Morgan, H-: W. Cabbie, 4; total, 35t out of a possible 48. Free Church Council.—Under the aus- pices of the Ogmore Valley Free Church Council, the Rev. Thomas Phillips, B.A., of Bloomsbury. Baptist Central Church, London, paid a visit to Ogmore Vale on Tuesday, the 30th ult. In the afternoon, a sermon was preached at Bethlehem (W.B.) Chapel (kindly lent for the occa- sion), and in the evening the rev. gentle- man. assisted by Sister Maggie, lectured on the Sins of the City and the Grace of God," being an account of rescue work in Bloomsbury. The attendances were good, and substantial collections were made. towards the Bloomsbury rescue work. The meetings were presided over bv Mr. Edward David, Nantymoel.
