Ogmore Vale. Obituary.—We regret to chronicle the death of another old inhabitant of the Valley in the person of Mrs. Jones, the aged mother of Mr. John Jones, butcher, Oaedu House. The old lady, who was in her 90th year, passed away in the early hours of last Wednesday morning, after a brief but severe illness. The interment took place on Monday, the 13th inst., at Llangeino.r Churchyard, there being a good attendance of local agriculturalists, among whom the deceased was well known. The last rites were reverently performed by the Rev. Charles Williams (Hermon) at the house, and the Rev. A. J. Edwards, M.A. (vicar) at the grave- side. English Congregational.—On Saturday night, the 11th inst., a very interesting and edifying lecture was delivered by the Rev. J. M. Jones, M.A., Aberdare, at the English Congregational Chapel. He took as his subject, "What is Chris- tianity? and the audience was treated to an excellent address. The lecture was held under the auspices of the Young People's Guild, and was presided over by Mr. Joseph Abel. A collection was taken at the. close towards the Guild funds. On Sunday night, at the same place of wor- ship, the rev. gentleman preached an eloquent sermon on What do youi think of Christ? to a large congregation. Billiards.—The first billiards tourna- ment to be held at Mr. Chas. Rattray's saloon proved to be a very successful one, and was brought to a close last week. There was a good number of entries, the players being divided into two classes. The handicapping was very equitably car- ried out, with the result that several games provided close and exciting finishes. The prize winners were as follow —First Class: 1st, A. Mayo; 2nd, T. Evans; 3rd, D. Rees. Second Class: 1st, O. Lewie; 2nd, H. Osborne; 3rd, H. Rees. Special Services.—On Monday and Tuesday, the 13th and 14th inst., special preaching services were held at Calvary (E.B.) Chapel. Excellent sermons were delivered by the Rev. D. Griffiths, the popular blind preacher of Colwyn Bay, North Wales. The attendance at both meetings was good, and it is hoped that a substantial sum will be added to the funds.

Maesteg. Parochial Festival.—On Monday, the second annual Parochial Missionary Fes- tival was held in connection with all the churches in the Llangynwyd parish. In the afternoon, a meeting was held in the New Church Hall, over which the Vicar presided, when the Rev. F. R. Williams, M.A., vicar of Llansannor, and other gentlemen -addressed a good gathering. In the evening, evensong and sermon was held in St. Michael's Church, when the Rev. Minor Canon Lewis, of Llandaff, preached an excellent sermon to a large congregation. The proceeds of the tea and the collections at all the services were and the collections at all the services were devoted to home and foreign missions. Debate.—On Wednesday evening (last week), an interesting meeting was held in connection with the Mutual Improve- ment Society at Oarmel Vestry. The chair was taken by Mr. Edward Richards, Oak- wood House. A short programme was provided. Solos were rendered by Messrs. Roland Morgan and W. J. Thomas, and a recitation was given by Mr. J. Wil- liams. A debate, entitled Is Smoking a Sin? also took place, the affirmative being taken by Mr. Morgan James and the negative by, Mr. W. J. Thomas. Several members also took part in the discussion. Town Hall.—On Monday night last, the Town Hall Theatre was occupied by Mr. Fred L. Connyngham's company in their famous domestic comedy drama, entitled "His Convict Wife." On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the same company performed A Mother's Love," which was quite successful. Missing Girl Found.—Rose Owen, aged 16, whose parents reside at Caerau, left her home on Monday (last week) and could not be traced for several days. The police received information on Wednes- day that she had slept in Bridgend, and on Saturday evening she was found at Barry. The. girl was sent back to her parents' on Monday. Public Meeting.—On Thursday evening (last week), a crowded assembly listened to an excellent address by Sir S. T. Evans, K.C., M.P., Liberal candidate for Mid-Glamorgan, in the Town Hall, Maesteg. The meeting was presided over by Councillor John Howells, J.P. Amongst those on the platform were: —Lady Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Gibbon, Messrs. W. G. Roberts, Granville Davies, Alfred Griffiths. Jenkin Jones, T. Rees (Garn- lwyd), D. Rees, D. Beynon, Joshua Wil- liams, Lewis Jones, the Revs. W. Bowen (Carmel), W. H. Thomas (Tabor), Ior- werth Jones (Bethania), W. R. Watkins (Tabernacle), D. Gwilym Jones (English Congregational), and T. Jones (Moriah). In the evening, Sir Samuel addressed a meeting: at Caersalem Chapel, over which Councillor Jenkin Jones, M.E., presided. Liberal League.—On Tuesday evening last, a public meeting was held in the Dorothy Restaurant, Maesteg. under the auspices of the Young Men's Liberal Association, with the intention of form- ing a League in the Maesteg district. Judging by the attendance, there is every hope that a very successful League will be formed in the district.

Dinas. An interesting personality has passed away in the death of Mrs. Jane Jones, an old lady, known locally as Grannie Jones," residing at 3, White Rock Row, Penygraig. Deceased, who was a native of Rhayader, Radnorshire, came to reside in the locality over 40 years ago. She had reached the ripe age of 80 years, and remained very active until a fortnight previous to her 'demise, which occurred on Thursday, the 9th inst. Mrs. Jones had been a most energetic worker in con- nection with Mount Horeb (P.M.) Chapel, Dinas, ever since its inception, and a very faithful attendant at all the ser- vices. For many years she had solicited the provisions for the school children's yearly treat, and always undertook to personally supervise the making of the tea for them. Her son, Mr. J. Jones, is the conductor of the Primitive Methodist Choir, a position which he. has held for nearly 25 years. The interment of the mortal remains took place on Monday last, when a large procession of friends attended. The corpse was taken into Mount Horeb Chapel, where a service was held. Mr. R. Thomas, Tonypandy, officiating. The following also spoke of the good work done by the deceased: — The Revs. J. Lamb, Evans (curate), Messrs. J. Gifford, Trealaw, and George Durnell, Ystrad. The procession, re- forming, then wended its way to Llethr- ddu Cemetery, Trealaw, the choir singing appropriate hymns en route to the grave- side. The scholars of the Sunday School also attended. The chief mourners in- cluded the following —Mr. Nehemiah Gould (son) and family; Mr. James Gould (son); Mr. John H. Jones (son) and family; Mr. Richard Jones (son) and family; Mr. Edward Jones (son) and family Mrs. Ford (daughter) and family; Mr. Thomas Coleman (son-in-law); Mrs. Nicholas (grand-daughter and family); Mr. T. Coleman (grandson) and family; Mrs. Kelly (grand-daughter) and family; Mrs. Woods (grand-daughter) and family; Mrs. Jones, Trehafod (grand-daughter); Mr. Enoch Gould, Trehafod (grandson). Amongst the beautiful floral tributes adorning the coffin was one sent by the members of Mount Horeb. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. J. Griffiths and Sons, Tonypandy.

The funeral took place on Thursday, the 9th inst.. at Treorchy Cemetery, the Rev. J. J. Williams, of Siloh, Pentre, officiating at the house and graveside. The cortege, which included the choir, under the conductorship of Mr. D. Davies (Siloh), was exceptionally large. The coffin, which was of beautiful oak, with heavy silver-plated mountings, was conveyed in a hearse, while the chief mourners occupied four carriages and com- prised the following: -Mr. Wm. Howells (husband); Messrs. Gwilym, David, John, Thomas, and George Howells (sons); Mm. Bradford, Barry (sister): Mr. and Mrs. Rees (brother and sister-in-law) Mr. and Mrs. Jones (brother-in-law and sister); Mr. and Mrs. Tiller (brother-in-law and sister); Mr. and Mrs. Prosser (broth. in-law and sister); Mr. and Mrs. Maine (brother-in-law and sister); Miss Mary, Howells, Carmarthen (sister-in-law); Miss Howells, Carmarthen (niece). A number of relatives, consisting of nephews and nieces from Cardiff, Maesteg. Mountain Ash, Penygraig, and Treherbert, were also present. Floral tributes were sent by the family and friends. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Howell Williams and Son, funeral direc- tors, Ystrad-Rhondda.

Treorehy. Coroner R. J. Rhys held an inquiry, at the Workmen's Institute on Thursday! of last week into the circumstances attending the death of Trevor, aged 3 years (son of Mr. James Cleaver, Dum- fries Street), whose death, consequent upon swallowing a sweetmeat which he got in a lucky potato," we announced last week. A verdict of "Accidenfsi death was returned, with a rider con- demning the practice of putting such articles in sweete. The funeral, which took place on Friday last, was well at- tended, and deep sympathy is extended the relatives in their sad and sudden bereavement. The Rev. J. E. Thomas (Ramah) officiated. Miss E. G. Wallis, of the Teachers' Training Institute Bournvillet gave the final public demonstration of a new method of teaching the primary depart- ment of the Sunday Schools last Satur- day evening at the Treorchy Boys' School, and before an appreciative assembly. There is a growing desire to give the new method a trial at some Sunday Schools. Although generally approved, many think the method impracticable within their own buildings. Mr. Howell Howells (Treorchy Schools) was respon- sible for the arrangements, and much credit is bestowed on him for the success achieved. Miss May Isaac and a number of the day school teachers of Treorchy assisted Miss Wallis throughout the demonstration, and are entitled to con- siderable credit, as also is Miss Minnie Ashton, A.L.C.M., for her services at the pianoforte.

Llwynypla. The Rev. John McNeill conducted a 3-days' mission at Salem on Wednesday,, Thursday and Friday. The meetings were well attended. The missioner delivered inspiring and edifying messages, and the manner in. which the. passages from Scrip-1 ture were explained and illustrated was undoubtedly new to many in the con- gregation. It is earnestly hoped, that the churches in the immediate vicinity will largely benefit and that much good will j be derived from the famous evangelist's i visit. j Pontrhondda. The Rev. James Morris, Llanstephan (late of Penygraig), delivered a lecture upon the "Three Heroes of Babylon" at Penuel (C.M.) on Saturday evening last. The Rev. T. G. Jenkyn, Salem, occupied the chair, in the absence of Oouncillor James Evans, Clydach Vale. In the course of the lecture Mr. Morris said that it was a matter for deep regret that I young people did not read more of the Bible and less novels of an inferior nature which were only fit to be thrown upon the fields as manure. The lecture was very much appreciated, the sparks of humour and wit thrown in here and there being, as the chairman remarked, like currants in a cake making it all the more tasty and palatable. Votes of thanks to the lecturer and the chairman brought the meeting to a close.

Trealaw. On Saturday evening last, a supper was f t held at the Miskin Hotel in connection ii with the Miskin Homing Society. After f an enjoyable repast, admirably catered < by the host and hostess, the tables were ¡, cleared, and the party settled down to a 1 smoking concert, over which Mr. Alec 1 Bernard presided. 'Ynyshir. A successful performance of Challinor's sacred cantata, The New Eden,' took place at St. Anne's Parish Church Hall, Ynyshir. on Thursday evening last. There was present a large and appreciative audi- ence, and there was evidence on all sides of the pleasure obtained from the per- formance. The artistes were: Soprano, Miss Mary French, Hopkinstown; tenor, Mr. David Thomas; contralto, Miss Esther Cooper; baritone, Mr. D. Price Howells, Porth. The first part of the woeramme was distinctly interesting. E French rendered The Vesper Praver in a manner that earned un- stinted praise. Return unto thy rest' was sung by Mr. D. Price Howells with Salient Esther Cooper sus- tained her increasing frj.' splendid renditions of Jhe Lost Chord and He was despised. The recit. and aria, Comfort ye and Every Valley, and also "Waft her angels," saw Mr. David Thomas (Wattstown) at his best, and stamped him again as the accom- plished tenor that he is. The book was divided into three Darts— Eden Lost, New Eden Promised," and "New Eden Revealed."1 The headings indicate the character of. the work The solos, it goes without saying, lacked nothing, and the

The meeting, which was fairly attended, was held under the auspices of the local branch of the Independent Labour Party. At Ebenezer Chapel on Thursday, a splendid rendering of the cantata, en- titled The Good Shepherd (T. Mee Pattison), was given by the Ebenezer Juvenile Choir before a large audience. Dr. D. C. Williams took the. chair. The choir, ably conducted by Mr. Ben Jones, L.T.S.O., gave a most enjoyable perform- ance of the cantata, and the audience, in turn, expressed its appreciation in hearty rounds of applause. The singing was generally admired. Preceding the performance of the book, a miscellaneous programme was gone through, to which the following artistes (who also took part in the cantata) contributed: —Sopranos, Madame M. Squires, and Misses Cassie Evans and Edith Griffiths; contraltos, Miss Gwen Squires and Master Glyndwr Evans; tenor, Mr. E. T. Todd; bass. Messrs. John Jones, R.W.M.C., and Arthur Jones. Miss Gwennie Evans, A.R.C.M. (pianist), and Mr, Wm. Jones (organist) discharged their duties in a very efficient manner. The proceeds were in aid of the Ebenezer Sunday School Fund. Another successful pictorial concert was given at Hope (E.B.) Chapel on Wednes- day evening. A good audience, mostly children, was in attendance. The follow- ing items were beautifully illustrated with coloured slides: Buy Your Own Cherries," Condemned to be Shot," and The Lighthouse Keeper," by Mr. Evan Rees; quartet, Throw out the Life- line," by Misses Edith and Milly Rees, and Messrs. David Rowlands and Walter Rees; quartet, "The Great Physician," by Miss Kate Jenkins and party; solo, "For all Eternity," by Miss M. Rees; and a gramophone selection, Excelsior," Mr. H. Roberts manipulated the lantern, with the assistance of Mr. Manly. ) The recently opened Fernhill Work- men's Institute has been a great boon to the workers of Blaenrhondda,, Tynewydd, and Treherbert. Since Thursday last entertainments have, been arranged each evening to take place in the spacious hall of the Institute. The entertainments are very similar to those which are held at the Workmen's Hall, Ton. A series of interesting films are shown nightly, the property of the Treherbert and Blaen- rhondda Biograph Company (newly formed). Bright and enjoyable variety turns are also introduced. Last week, the varieties were Mr. Godfrey Price, Ferndale; and the Minervas, expert diaboloists. These performances will be continued throughout the winter season. Mr. Richard Harris is general manager, and Mr. I. Bowen is a musical director. The hall has been furnished with rows of comfortable easy chairs, and the platform has been converted into a stage, with footlights. The Rev. L. Ton Evans, missionary from Haiti, addressed a large audience on missionary, work at Bethany School- room last Sunday afternoon. The mis- sioner was accompanied by a negro girl, who was the daughter of the chief judge in Haiti; who is also a deacon of one of the native Baptist churches. The Rev. S. B. John, Blaenclydach (who was offi- ciating at Bethany that day) occupied the chair. The Rev. Ton Evans made a most eloquent address. He presented a vivid picture of the present sad state of affairs in Haiti, and emphasised the good work already accomplished by missioners there. The second lecture of a series drawn up for the present winter session by the Ebenezer (W.C.) Young People's Literary Society was delivered on Tuesday evening (last week) at Ebenezer. The Rev. J. Dyfnallt Owen, Pontypridd, was the lec- turer, and he greatly interested the audi- ence by his edifying; discourse on Ceiriog, Bardd y Bobl." The Rev. J. C. Jones (pastor) occupied the chair. An interesting billiard tournament is now taking place at the Fernhill Work- men's Hall and Institute. The first com- petition took place last week. There were seventeen entries, the games being 100 up. Councillor W. H. Morgan and Mr. John Morgan are the handicappers, whilst Mr. T. Phelps officiates as referee and marker. On each night last week the billiard room was crowded, and the games were watched with much .interest and excitement. The first round ended as follows: —H. Husband (receiving 5) beat L. Wolfe T. Cwmparc. The Thespian art is rapidly dominating the temperaments of Cwmparc folk, and the name of the little village will per- haps be enrolled on the scroll of fame as having produced a dramatist of no mean order all on its own." We refer to Mr. Bonvil Davies, who on Thursday and Saturday evenings of last week produced on the Park Hall stage to an eager pub- lic a Scriptural drama (in Welsh), en- titled Y Wraig o Ddyffrn Sorec." The plot was woven around the ensnaring of Samson by Delilah, his downfall, im- prisonment and magnificent" revenge upon the Philistines, when he slew more in his death than in his life." Mr. Davies has long been known as an eisteddfodio poet of considerable pretensions, and his present work, although in some parts reminiscent of the "Samson Agonistis" of Milton, shows a fine faculty of imagination, a good command of pure and powerful Welsh, and more important of all, a good grasp of the exigencies of dramatic development. The five scenes were presented as follows: —1, the Vale of Sorec; 2, the House of Samson and Delilah; 3, the Prison at Gaza; 4, Dagon's Temple; 5, the Ruins of the Temple. The chorus included Philistine lords and ladies Philistine warriors, Israelites, &c. It may be said at the outset that the acting of the several characters throughout was excellent, a pleasing feature being the naturalness of the pose of each actor and the fact that every performer was word-perfect." The composer acted as stage, manager, and the scenery was appropriate and the cos- tumes not anachronistic. The chorus music was rendered by a well-balanced choir, and the original compositions of Mr. Davies were tuneful and pleasing. Miss Davies as Delilah was in parti- cular well received by the audience, and the chorus of maidens behind the scenes, who sang in encouragement to the im- prisoned hero, was pretty and effective. Mr. Tom Lewis as Samson in orison was at his best, and acted with a nath^ti^ fervour which was highly effective, although a slight inclination to indulge in the monotonous intonation character- istic of the Welsh nulpit marred its com- plete success. Messrs. Griff. Thomas and David Jones deserve special mention for good work. It may be added that all the parts were taken by Cwmparc residents. 1

Porth. We deeply regret to record the death of Frederick William Stacey. son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Stacey, 11, Britannia Street, Porth, which occurred on Thursday morn- ing last under rather tragic circum- stances. The deceased, who was only 20 years of age., had recently been ill, but his illness was not considered of a serious nature. On Thursday morning last, despite the remonstrations of his parents, he proceeded to his work at the Trevor Pit of the Lewis Merthyr Colliery Company, from whence an hour or so later he was carried home a corpse, he having collapsed at his work and expired immediately. At the inquest held on Saturday, death was attributed to heart failure, accelerated by bronchitis. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, a large number of relatives and friends being present. The Rev. Wm. Thomas, vicar of Porth, officiated at the house and graveside at Llethrddu Cemetery. Among the mourners were:—Mr. and Mrs. F. Stacey (parents); Mr. and Mrs. Spiers, Porth (brother-in-law and sister); Mr. and Mrs. S. Jones, Porth (brother-in-law and sister); Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kittey, Porth (brother-in-law and sister Mr. and Mrs. E. Heafield, Porth (brother-in- law and sister); Mr. and Mrs. Busaiss, Porth (brother-in-law and sister); Misses S. Stacey, D. Stacey and R. Stacey (sister); Masters C. Stacey and W. Stacey (brothers); Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stacey, Trealaw (uncle and aunt) Mr. and Mrs. James Herapath, Blaengwynfi (cousins). Among the several wreaths was one from his chums. We extend our deepest sym- pathy to the bereaved family. With deep regret we also record the death of little Margaret Ann Williams, aged 12 years, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Williams, of 61, Primrose Ter- race, Porth, which took place on Thurs- day evening last, after a long and pain- ful illness. Possessing a nice disposition, the little child was beloved by all who knew her, and her premature death is deeply lamented. The interment took place on Wednesday afternoon at Llethr- ddu Cemetery, Trealaw, the officiating minister being the. Rev. R. E. Salmon, Porth. —— Mr. Samuel Parr presided over the P.S.A. meeting held at the John Pugh Memorial Hall on Sunday afternon last. Previous to an explanatory address by the president upon the P.S.A. movement, the following gentlemen contributed to the afternoon's entertainment: —Mr. W. G. Jones rendered some very choice, solos, while instrumental duets and quartets were given by Messrs. R. H. Evans, M. J. Jones, R. J. Williams and D. Griffiths, accompanied by Mr. T. W. Abraham. The attendance was fairly good and the meet- ing an enjoyable one.

Worthy of particular mention is the air sung by Miss Cooper, The sun shall be no more thy lioht," the airs sung by Mr. Thomas, and the chorus, And lo! a great multitude." If fault there was, it was in the bass part of Blessed are they." The voices lacked that strength and force needed. The last part ended with an excellent quartet and chorus, And they shall reign for ever." The whole effort is worthy of a special meed of praise and reflects the greatest credit on Mr. David Thomas, who was, as well as being tenor soloist, the conductor and the promoter of the event. Gifted with a splendid voice, Mr. Thomas can also now claim recognition as a conductor. No report would be complete, without men- tion of the organ accompaniment. This was a feature of the whole event, and those concerned should congratulate them- selves on securing the services of so able a player as Mr. David Jones, the organist of St. Peter's, Pentre, whose playing heightened the tone of the performance. The gramophone concert held in con- The gramophone concert held in con- nection with, and for the funds of, the new Wattstown Institute came off on Friday evening last at the Workmen's Hall, Ynyshir. Despite the extreme inclemency of the weather, the attendance was an exceptionally good one. The task accorded Mr. Enoch Lewis. A.C., Tylors- town, that of adjudicating the very large number of entries in the whistling solo, sentimental and comic songs classes, was not an enviable' one, but he acquitted himself in a highly creditable manner. The whistling solo was won by Mr. Dd. Jones, Porth, whose record was "Students' Revels the sentimental song was won by Mr. Morgan J. James, Ferndale, with Kathleen Mavourneen and the comic song nrize was divided between the same two competitors. Added interest was given to the proceedings by Mr. James Rosser singing Baner ein Gwlad," and Mr. David Thomas Once again and "Llam y Cariadau." Very kindly and unexpectedly, Mr. Bynorth allowed the showing of some excellent bioscope pic- tures, which gave great delight. The concert was admirably presided over by Mr. J. Kane, M.E., the president of the Institute. Mr. D. Phillips (Council Schools) and Mr. John Vaughan respec- tively proposed and seconded a vote of thanks to the chairman, and Mr. Kane responded and expressed the meeting's thanks for the use of the bioscope. The secretaries responsible for the event were Messrs. E. T. Woods and W J. Parry.

Mr. Rees Davies' local orchestra ren- dered invaluable assistance, and the work of Mr. Gwilym Jones at the piano was of a high order. The president on Thurs- day was the Rev. J. Davies (Salem); on Saturday, Mr. Ben Rees, M.E. and on Monday, Mr. Evan Middleton, M.E.
