Ton-Pentre Police Court. Monday.—Before the Stipendiary (Mr. D. Lleufer Thomas), Mr. T. P. Jenkins, Alderman Wm. Morgan, Alderman Richd. Lewis, Alderman E. H. Davies, and Mr. W. T. Jones. COMPLIMENTARY BANQUET TO MR. L. W. LLEWELYN. Mr. D. W. James, Tonypandy, applied for an extension of license for the White Hart Hotel, Tonypandy, on Thursday evening next, on the occasion of the Mid- Rhondda Horse Show Committee's com- plimentary banquet to Mr. Leonard Llewelyn. The police offered no objection, and the Application vvas granted, Mr. T. P. Jen- kins* remarking: It must be a respect- able function; I have had a complimen- tary ticket myself (laughter). SALE OF SUNDAY NEWSPAPERS. Wm. Jas. Morgan (16), Blaenycwm, was summoned for a breach of the Rhondda District Council Bye-laws for employing a person under 16 to sell newspapers on Sundays. P.S. Edwin Williams said that in October last he saw a boy selling papers on Sunday in Tynewydd. In reply to questions, the boy said that he was 11 years of age, and sold the papers for his brother. On the following Sunday, wit- ness spoke to defendant, and his mother, who was present at the interview, eaid that they were not aware they were doing ■any wrong. Defendant's mother, who answered the oharge, said that the sale of newspapers had been discontinued since they were spoken to by the officer. Similar charges were brought against Joseph Harris, Blaenycwm, and John Lewis, Ynyswen Road, Treherbert, and after being cautioned, all three defen- dants were discharged. MENE, MENE, &c.! Several Mid-Rhondda tradesmen were charged with using unstamped or unjust I weights and scales. Mr. D. W. James, Tonypandy, appeared to defend in all the .caaœ. The. first case heard was against the Blaenclydach Branch of the Mid-Rhondda Co-operative Society, who were charged with having two unstamped, weights in their possession. Henry Hill, Inspector of Weights and Measures, sai7l that on 14th December he visited the stores at the back of defen- dants' premises, where he saw^two 561bs. ■weights unstamped. In September last, he gave notice to defendants to produce all their weights and weighing instru- .ments for verification, and the whole of their instruments and weights except fthese two weights were correct. Asked \why these weights had not been submit- ted along with the others, the manager said that they must have been overlooked. In reply to Mr. James, witness said that he did not think defendants had any .,intention to defraud, and the fact of the weights being unstamped was due to neglect. Two charges were preferred against Ivor David, grocer, 157, Court Street, Blaenclydach. The Inspector said that he found two weights-2m. and 8oz.—on defendant's counter. The 2oz. weight was 6t grains short, and the 8oz. weight half a dram short.. the latter weight being also unstamped. John A. Davies, 12, Court Street, Tony- pandy, was next charged with having in his possession a 41b. weight which had been previously condemned, and which was 2oz. 3t drams light. Mrs. Davies, to whom the Inspector spoke about the mat- ter, said that the weight was not in use, but that she had picked it up from the floor and had placed it on the counter. Two charges of having an unjust and unstamped scale were preferred against Harry Davies, also of Court Street. The Inspector warned defendant in September last not to use the scale until it had been repaired, and affixed a label upon it. When witness visited defendant's shop in Decem- ber, the scale was still being used. It was several ounces against the purchaser in the maximum weight placed upon it, and nro rata with lesser weights. Lewis Lewis, Court Street, was charged with having an unstamped machine. Defendant said that he had had the scale adjusted three years ago. Incorrect scales brought David Howells, general dealer, 8, Court Street, to the bar of justice; whilst Daniel Thomas, .grocer, 89, Court Street, had two unjust weights, and an unstamped scale upon his counter. The Stipendiary said there was proof 'of neglect on defendants' part in the cases he had heard, which showed that they were prepared to take any advan- tage that might accrue to them through keeping these inaccurate scales and weights, and the following fines would be imposed, with a view of enforcing a higher standard of care: -Co-operative Society, 10s.; Ivor David (two charges), 10s. and 5s.; J. A. Davies (two charges), 10s. in each case; Harry Davies (two ■charges), 10s. in each case; L. Lewis, lor,. David Howells, 15s. Danl. Thomas (three charges), £ 2. PEDLAR'S THEFT. John Brinkworth, a pedlar, was dis- charged with a caution for stealing a loaf of bread, value 6d., the property of Mary Ann Howells, Ystrad. SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST TREHER- BERT MAN. William Griffiths, Charles Street, Tre- herbert, was charged with having carnal knowledge of Margaret Jenkins (14), of Dumfries Street, Treherbert. Mr. W. T. Davies, Porth, appeared for prisoner Complainant said that on Saturday evening last she went to prisoner s house to see a person named Wakely, who was in apartments with him. Prisoner came to the door, and said that Mr. and Mrs. Wakely had gone out. She then went in, and put prisoner's children to bed. lie told her he would marry her, and he gave 'her a ring. He then went out, and returned in about two hours. He then called the children down, and shortly afterwards told her to take them to bed aieain When she took them up, he fol- Kd' her and committed the offence.. Neath Woman's Child. Ciydach Vale Collier Refuses to Pay- At Neath on Monday, David John Shepherd, collier, Ciydach Vale, was summoned by Letitia Hinder, a married woman, of Alexander Street, Neath, to show cause, &c. Mr. Matthew Arnold appeared for the applicant, who said that her husband had been out in South Africa fcj the last three years. Defendant had legged with her. He had told her that he was getting married and would then take the child away. Defendant said his case was useless, because too many lies had been told. The Bench made an order for the pay- ment of 3s. 6d. per week, costs and an advocate's fee. Defendant: I have never been in gaol, but before I pay a penny towards that child I will go down for a month every time for the next 14 years.

Old Age Pension Anniver- sary. Interesting Celebration at Treherbert. To celebrate the anniversary of Old Age Pensions Day, a banquet was held by the Blaenycwm Orchestral Band at the Fern- hill Workmen's Institute on Friday after- noon, to which all the old age pensioners of the locality were invited free. It did one's heart good to see the old folk thus gathered together for the celebration. About 25 pensioners out of a, total of 60 in the locality attended. Prominent in the work was County Councillor Enoch Davies, J.P., who said that it was one of the pleasantest moments of his life to be with them that afternoon, in order to join in the commemoration of that excel- lent idea of their noble countryman, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (hear, hear). They should thank God for such men as Mr. Lloyd George, who provided a weekly pension for those who had striven for themselves throughout their lives. He (the speaker) knew of people who would rather starve than enter the workhouse, and it was those people whom they should look after. On behalf of the committee and friends, he wished the pensioners a very happy time. Six tables were spread with a sumptuous fare, which was thoroughly enjoyed. The attendants were:—Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Lewis (Stuart Hotel), Mrs. L. Thomas, Mrs. M. Davies, Mrs. M. Jones, Mrs. M. Davies, Mrs. J. Griffiths, and Misses E. Thomas L. Shep- herd, L. Thomas, Davies, N. Rees, M. M. Thomas, Griffiths, Jones, Powell, E. Mor- gan, Davies, and L. J. Thomas. After the banquet, several of the pen- sioners made speeches, and spoke feel- ingly about the kindness which had been shown them there that afternoon. A vote of thanks was enthusiastically accorded the providers of the banquet; to Mr. Asquith and Mr. Lloyd George in parti- cular, and to the Liberal Party for bring- ing about the Old Age Pensions Act. Most of the speakers hoped the Liberal Party would be again returned to office, and one pensioner went as far as to say that if he had 50 votes he would record them all in favour of the Liberal Party. Selections were played during the ban- quet by the Blaenycwm Orchestral Band, under the leadership of Mr. Wm. Davies, A.T.S.O.

Obituary. Mpti Gwendoline May Davies, Tonypandy, With deep regret we chronicle the death of Mrs. Gwendoline May Davies, the wife of Mr. Henry Davies, iron- monger, Tonypandy, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Samuel, M.A., County Schools, Porth, which took place very suddenly at her father's residence, Dolavon," Porth, on Boxing Day. Deceased, who was only 23 years of age, was spending Christmas Day at home with her parents, and was taken very ill in the evening. The following morning her condition improved somewhat, but the change for the better did not last long, for she died at 10.15 that evening. Mrs. Davies had only been married two years, and was very well known throughout the locality and much esteemed. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, the Rev. J. E. Dennis, of Bethel (E.B.) Chapel, Tonypandy, officiating at the house and graveside. Among the mourners following the corpse were:—Mr. H. Davies, Tonypandy (husband); Mr. E. Samuel, Porth (father); Mr. Reginald Samuel, Porth (brother); Mr. Samuel Davies, Tonypandy (father-in-law); Mr. Samuel, Porth (brother); Mr. Samuel Davies, Tonypandy (father-in-law); Mr. J. Treherbert. The annual meat supper of the Bethany (E.B.) Chapel Choir (conductor, Mr. Sol. Watkins) took place on New Year's Eve and was a brilliant success. A very large number sat down to the well-spread tables, and the attendants were kept busy for about three hours. Following the supper, games were indulged in until midnight. Mr. Arthur Davies proved a very ener- getic secretary. The treasurer was Mr. Wm. Morgan.
