Determined Suicide. Mardy Man Crawls to River. After having been| Run Over. The body of a young man identified as that of Thomas Purchase (21), a collier, living at 8, James Street, Mardy, was found in the Rhondda Facli river, be- tween Mardy and Ferndale, on Sunday morning. It appears that the young man left home on Saturday and visited Cardiff in the evening. The following morning a letter was received by his mother at Mardy, which stated that before she received that he would be gone. On Sunday morning: his body was found in the river by a Taff Yale Railway em- ployee. Upon examination it was found that he had been injured on the line. It is presumed that he attempted to commit suicide on the railway line. In this he failed, but sustained severe injury, and the desperate man is then supposed to have crawled from the rail- way track and thrown himself into the river and thus ended his sufferings. GOOD-BYE TO ALL." The inquest upon deceased was held at Mardy on Tuesday by Mr. R. J. Rhys. coroner. The evidence showed that deceased left home about 4.15 on Saturday afternoon, and a letter was received on Sunday morning by his mother from Cardiff, stating that he need not be expected home, as by the time it was received he would be gone. The letter added that "hecoulcl not show her his money on Saturday. It was only 16s.-he enclosed 10s." Owen T. Williams, an engine cleaner, who found the body, said his notice was attracted to a coat under a brake van, a stocking, a foot, and a piece of skin on the line, and a paper on which was written, "'Good-bye to all. Good-bye. I have thought of this a long time. I have gone for ever. Good-bye." Dr. Glanville Morris gave it as his opinion that death was due to shock and exposure from the injuries received by being run over on the line. It was pos- sible for him to have crawled to the water and fallen in. A verdict of Suicide whilst temporarily insane was returned.

I Penygraig1. This week we have to -record the death of Mrs. Evans, the wife of Mr. J. Evans, undertaker, Penygraig, after a short and severe illness, leaving a husband and three children to mourn her loss. Mrs. Evans was the daughter of the late Dafydd Jones, fireman, Penygraig, who lost his life at the Penygraig explosion and who was the founder of the Llanfair- ar-y-Bryn Church. Mrs. Evans, like her father, took a keen interest in church work at Dewi Sant Church, Tonypandy. She acted as organist for over 16 years. The funeral took place on Thursday, the 20th inst., at the Trealaw Cemetery. The officiating clergy were the Vicars of Llwynypia, Penygraig, and Resolven, the Revs. E. W. Hughes (Dewi Sant), 1. J. Williams (All Saints'), J. R. Pugh, H. Parry, and W. Bice (Penarth). The choir, numbering 400, sang appropriate hymns at Dewi Sant Church, en route, and at the cemetery. The mourners were as follow —First coach—husband and three children, Misses Jones (sisters), and Mns. Roberts, 112, Tylacelyn Road; second coach—Mrs. Rowlands (sister), Mrs. Davies (sister), Mrs. Owen and Miss Owens, Ystrad (sisters-in-law), and Misses Davies, Field Street (nieces): third coach —Mrs. Jones, Treorchy (cousin), Mrs. T. P. Thomas, Hafod (aunt), Mrs. Rees (niece), Mrs. Thomas, Tonypandy (cousin), Mrs. Davies, Tonypandy (cousin), and Mrs. L. Thomas, Tonypandy (cousin); fourth coach-Mrs. Williams, Treorchy (cousin), Mrs. Davies, Treorchy (cousin), Mrs. George, Caerphilly (cousin), Mrs. Phillips, Mountain Ash (cousin), and Miss Bonnie Jones (niece); fifth coach—Rev. T. P. Thomas, Hafod (uncle). Mr. John Thomas, Rhymney (uncle), Mr. T. J. Davies, Field Street (nephew), Masters D. Jones and Douglas Jones (nephews); sixth coach—Mr. J. D. Jones (brother) and family. The churchwarden, Mr. T. Jones, and sidesmen of Dewi Sant acted as bearers. Mr. D. James, Penygraig, played the Dead March as the funeral were leaving the church. Wreaths were sent by the husband and children Mr. and Mrs. Rowlands, Cardiff: Dewi Sant Church, and the Band of Hope. The coffin was of unpolished Welsh oak, with heavy silvered fittings.

Pontrhondda. A very successful and well-attended competitive meeting was held at Penuel (C.M.) on Saturday evening. The chair was occupied by Mr. B. Thinking that I was inlside a Tariff Reform den, I hurried upstairs, where the first object my eye alighted upon was a case containing Mudie's books. Most of these books were in a battered condition, and were a dis- grace to the body having the ordering of ) same. It would be far better if such books were sold, and replaced by new volumes. Upon inquiry, I found that all past periodicals were piled away to rot. Would it not be better if they were dis- tributed among the sick and injured? My observation of the contents of the bookcases leads me to the following con- elusions as to the nature of the books stocked: — Fiction.—Too expensive. I Biography.—Sparingly. History.—Poor.
