— Hippodrome, Tonypandy. I The position of honour is given this week to Sydney Mason and Theresa Moore's company in an interesting drama- tic episode, "The Usurer." In other words, the plot is written round Herbert Dane, a moneylender, trading as Ben- jamin White and Co., whose wife, coming in contact with an adventurer, forges her fcueband's name on a cheque for a large amount. The piece is full of exciting incidents which keep one on the qui vive till the fall of the curtain. Both Mr. Sydney Mason and Miss Theresa Moore deserve a word of praise for their clever acting, whilst the other participants in the piece display especial merit. The Merrions, the renowned vocal and instru- mental comedy entertainers, are tremen- dously appreciated in a light, varied, novel, smart and original entertainment. The Merrions are old hands in the amuse- ment line, but we never remember seeing them in such a smart show as they give this week. Edmund Caselli, banjo vir- j.tuoso, appears with no little success; and Little Miss Muffett, the Canadian mite, with charming childish naivete, is greatly .enjoyed. Phillips and Bristow, vocalists and expert dancers, are also extremely i-succewful in their efforts to please. The »»pictures axe well up to standard, includ- ing "A Story of Circus Life," "Wild Birds in Their Haunts," &c. For next week, Mr. Stone has been 'fortunate enough to secure Miss May Henderson, the dusky comedy queen. 'Anyone who has not seen this dusky lady has* a treat in store.

Theatre Royal, Tonypandy. Messrs. Green and Hinton are paying a return visit to the -Royal with Home, Sweet H-ome." It is a play of intense interest, of a character always attrac- tive to Rhondda audiences. The inci- dents centre round the daughter of the Duke of Ancaster (Mr. Chas. Clifford), who, while supposed to have perished wheii an infant with her mother in a wrefck at sea, was rescued and brought k-up as an adopted daughter by an old lifeboatman, David Armitage (Mr. F. G. Kay). The old man's son, Stephen Armitage (Mr. Arthur Hinton), falls in love with and marries the heroine, Joan.71 (Miss Florence Zillwood). Events lead up to the discovery by the Duke of his lost fUL:11ter, who leaves husband and child to 1;, palace. She is led to believe iiiey will be well pro- "videel for, but discovering the duplicity of the villain of the piece, Lucas Lisle," the Duke's private secretary (Mr. G. M. Williams), and the illness of her child, "Dora," she leaves the splendour of the palace for her cottage home and her loved ones. The play is well staged, and the capable acting throughout is greatly appreciated. Miss Lizzie Routhe's im- personation of "Gaffer," an old country- woman, causes roars of laughter. Mr. A. iReaufort as The Hon. Percy," and Miss Flossie Hayes as "Sybil Fay," carry out their parts cleverly, and Miss Hilda Vokes as little Dora" also shows exr "Ceptional merit. The attraction billed for next week is The Nihilist; or, A Prince's Secret Wedding."

Tivoli Pentre. The ever-popular pantomime centreing iround "Dick Whfttington and His Cat will attract large crowds to the Tivoli this week. On Monday evening there was ia very large attendance. The production is on a modern scale of lavisl,nesc xeel- lent scenery, magnificent dresses, a large and efficient chorus, as well as a splendid orchestra, all of which spell success. The eleven scenes follow one another in very! quick time, the interval between anv two scenes being extremely short. Thus the pantomime is continuous throughout, pro- Tiding amusement and enjoyment to the (satisfaction of all. As Dick Whitting- ton" MiN. Daisv Yates wa-s a great suc- cess; the participants deserve praise one .and all for their good work. There were jokes galore and smart talk, as well as (amusing situations. One scene will remain in the minds of all who witnessed it, amely, the scene in which Betsy VNfr. Dan Thomas) and "Dick Whittiiig- I 'ton rehearse a duet and dance as Irish comedians. In the last scene there is the Lord Mayor's procession, in which a stage -coach is drawn by four black ponies, and Dick Whittington" arrives upon his (spotted charger. One must not forget a few words of praise to the Cat, whose antics; aret very funny. Very clever fdanoeo. were executed by the Olga, Belles.

Palace Porth. Topping the bill at the Palace this week is the popular comedian, Harry Grey, the Australian nugget, who cap- tures the audience immediately with his witty sayings, smart jokes, and catchy songs. He is responsible for roars of laughter. The Denars Brothers are also greatly appreciated, their gymnastic and acrobatic feats being exceedingly clever. They are accorded loud applause. Phil Parsons, comedian, needs no special com- ment, as he is well known to Rhondda audiences. He is, as ever, in loud demand. Violet Armidale is a very artistic and dainty soubrette, possessing a charm that is most taking, and easily captivated all hearts. The celebrated Paul Kramer Troupe, including Miss Martha Kramer-one of the greatest lady gymnasts on the stage-is exceedingly clever. Their feats of skill are almost beyond description, and they are awarded a well-deserved applause. The Sisters Indiana, the flexible ladies, are also smart, their twisting ability having been remarkably developed. Walter Stanley, comedian, possesses originality and is greatly appreciated. The Palascope tableaux are, as usual, up to date and augment a good show.

Cardiff Empire. The popular vocal comedian, Whit Ounliffe, is due at the Cardiff Empire on Monday next, with his latest song suc- cesses. Mile. Irma Lorraine, assisted by Marjah, late principal dancer from the Harem of the deposed Sultan, Abdul Hamid, and Mile. Leonv, will give an entirely new and beautiful performance in living pictures and in artistic Eastern dances. Reichen's wonderful /'performing dogs will go through a most remarkable per- formance, evincing an almost human intelligence. The Courtiers, under the direction of Paul Mill, will give a miniature musical comedy entertainment; the Barowskys, from the London Hinpodrome, in an acrobatic act full of novelties; Adey Spencer, the Girl from the Hat Shop Sisters Storm, duettists and dancers; Barrington, at the piano; and Kisbey the call-boy are other items of the programme.

New Workmen's Hall Ferndale. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday eveningis, crowded houses witnessed the popular pathetic 'drama, How Girls Are Brought To Ruin," by Mr. Morton Powell's company. The play is written by Mrs. Morton Powell, who takes the chief role, Miss Winnie Waters," with great effect. Miss Isla Garnet Vayne was great in her interpretation of Jessie Burton," the work-girl. Miss Kateryne Eckhart, who took the part of Mrs. Annie Burton," looked an ideal step- mother. Harry Hailing," a sailor in love with Jessie," was ably acted by ott, and showed a splendid grasp o: .9 r.icter. The heavy part was exceedingly done by Mr. Edward M Hearley, whose acting was excellent. Mr. James Turner as Sergt. Pride also did his part well, and Jack Jossie, the London Lad," had an able exponent in Mr. Sydney Bryant. The play arrested the attention of the audience from begin- ning to end, and the scenic effects are capitally worked, the Court scene being most realistic.

Opera House, Treherbert. Mr. Chas. W. Poole's well-known ex- hibition visits the Ouera House during next week. Mr. Poole's entertainments are so well known in the Rhondda, as elsewhere, that, like good wine, they need no bush. It is claimed for this year's production that it is the grandest and most sumptuously produced exhibition of its kind in the world. In addition to this unique entertainment, there are the Royal Banzaie, a well-known troupe of Japanese performers; W. R. Rowlands, a comedian of the first order; the Cairo Trio, in an Oriental musical act; Sydney Bach, the renowned Welsh entertainer; Inez and Pim, gymnasts; Bros. Rees, military athletes. A series of the latest bioscope films will also be shown. A matinee will be held on Saturday after- noon at 2.30. At the Pavilion, Tonypandy, large crowds are to be seen every evening, enjoying themselves to the full. Peach, manager of the above Rink, who has given exhibitions at some of the largest Rinks, and is recog- nised to be England's most graceful gentleman skater, will, during the month commencing March 7th, on two nights per week, viz., Wednesdays and Fridays, and until further notice, give an original performance, unequalled in any other Rink in the district." x x x Mr. Peach, in our opinion, is one of the finest skaters in the Kingdom, and an exhibition of skating from him will be of marked interest. XXX The fascination attached to roller skating continues to attract large 'num- bers of enthusiasts to the Olympia, Pentre, for the daily sessions. x x x In the evening, the floor is fully occu- pied by graceful skaters, and the manage- ment, under the guidance of Mr. Studd, successfully endeavours to secure maxi- mum comfort and enjoyment for all. x x x The social event of the rinking season will undoubtedly be the grand Carnival of All Nations at Olympia on the evening of St. David's Day. A happy thought, this, and a wonderful sight it should prove—quite a pageant of nations. At the last Carnival, many of the cos- tumes were really magnificent, and re- flected the greatest credit upon their inventors; in fact, visitors from Cardiff familiar with Cardiff Carnivals, gave it as their opinion that nothing finer has been seen in or out of Cardiff. x x x We are pleased to note that Miss Lilian Ryan, Treherbert, was successful in win- ning a first prize in her novel and attrac- tive costume representing the Rhondda Leader newspaper, at the Pontypridd Carnival last week. XXX We learn that Mr. Herbert Homer, of Pentre, who won a valuable gold watch at the Pavilion, Tonypandy. has also won first prizes at Pentre and Pontypridd Skating Rinks with his extremely novel and original costume. XXX We are making arrangements to re- produce a photograph of Mr. Homer attired in this novel dress in our columns next week.

I Crushed between Tram and Side. On Saturday evening last, Bert White (27), Bodringallt Terrace, Ystrad-Rhon- dda, was fatally injured at the Bod- ringallt Colliery. It appears that the deceased was crushed between a tram and the roadside. Deceased, who was a native of Birmingham, died on Monday morning.
