EDITORIAL NOTES.
EDITORIAL NOTES. In the death of King Edward VII., we venture to assert with the greatest con- fidence that one of the most popular Monarchs that has ever eat on a throne, and most emphatically the British Throne, has passed away. In cottage and palace there is equal and universal sorrow. The blow is all the more hard because it came in a way with a tragic surprise. The King is dead. It is easy to write the words, and easy to phrase them; but what a depth of significance rests in the mean- ing. Even on Thursday and Friday of last week we were more or lesebuoyed up by the thoughts that the illness was but temporary, and as he had publicly ap-1 peared iSo_ late as Monday of that week, apprehensions were not unusually roused, But when the bulletins contained the information that there was "grave anxiety," then alarm began to develop. The- nation had good reasons to appre- ciate the good King Edward, and though hifi reign was short in point of years his name and doings will have a high and honourable place in the long line of dis- tinguished rulers who have occupied the British Throne. What was the secret of the immense popularity of King Edward? Not only was he popular in his own realm, but he had won for himself a great position among the rulers of the world, and it is not overstating the fear that the removal of no other Monarch in Europe will have a greater possibility in disturbing the existing amity prevailing. Unquestion- ably his popularity was exceptional, because it was broad-based upon his per- sonality, a personality which was due, not to striking abilities, or to great energy of character, but to his natural shrewd- ness, his judgment, his good sense, and above all, consummate tact. His record service to international good feeling, and his triumphs for international peace, will always award him the great and eharac' teristic title of Peacemaker, and U Blessed are the peacemakers" will be his reward in history and in the great hereafter. King Edward was a People's Monarch. He had no side, and those, fortunate in the inner circles of the Court knew that homeliness with dignity was the desire of King ^Edward in all his public func- tions. Those who were present at the garden I)arties of Windsor felt that the ,secret of his popularity was easily, ex- plained when they saw him cracking jokes with Mr. Crooks, or talking familiarly with Mabon. Though there is a big gulf between the Monarch and the plebian, the late King had a way with him which could bridge the distance gracefully, and yet without endangering the dignity of the exalted position he held. The Labour Party recognised his great social genius. Very recently, one of the Labour members, touched by his wide humanity, his admirable tact, his infectious good humour, and his ever- ready sympathy, said in the House of Commons that the people of these isles recognise that Monarchy is far better for their prosperity than any form, of govern- ment." And the reason was, as Mr. Seddon put it, because the present atti- tude of the country towards, the Crown, especially among the labouring classes, was one of dee" affection, and that was not influenced by the prerogatives of the Crown, but had been created and developed by the present illustrious occu- pant of the. Throne and his illustrious mother, by their interest and kindly sym- pathy in the trials and sorrows and well- being of the people. His constitutional characteristics were very marked, and his absolutely impartial attitude to prominent men of all parties was a very marked virtue in his treatment of Government matters. When Prince of Wales, he showed very great, friendship for the late Grand Old Man"—William Ewart Gladstone, and likewise for Sir Henry Campbell-Banner man. When we know from history how some Sovereigns took sides with political partisans, the good sense of King Edward understood that such a thing would not do in this age- He followed worthily the Victorian tradi- tion, and if is the right one. A Monarch. should not interfere in politics, and should be very sensitive in observance of the constitutionalism which has been laboriously built up in this country. The, King is dead," but the very mean- ing carries with it its correlative formula, Long live the King." It is a funda- mental principle that lives though the "art may have different castes in differ- ent times. We welcome King George. He enters upon his great responsibility at a critical stage in the history of the country, and has in front of him' peculiar difficulties. Still, we have confidence that this son of a worthy father will, by wise judgment and noble precedent, not dic-, appoint us.
Penygraig and District Chamber…
Penygraig and District Chamber of Trade. The monthly meeting of the above Chamber was held on Friday last at the Dinas Institute. Mr. T. D. Evans, Dinas, presiding. Among the correspondence, the Secre- tary (Mr. D. R. Watkins) read the fol- lowing interesting letter from Mr. W. E- Bradshaw, of the Great Western Rail- way — v Dear Sir,—Referring to correspond- ence and interview in 1908, I am now pleased to say that it has been decided to run the 7.42 p.m. from Llantrisant to Penygraig, and the 9 p.m. back from Penygraig on Mondays, Thursdays, .and Saturdays,—Yours faithfully, W. E. BRADSHAW. The additional train service will be a great advantage to these localities. A communication was received from Mr. W. P. Nicholas, on behalf of the Rhondda District Council, inviting the opinion of the Chamber upon the pro- posal of the sub-postmasters throughout the Valley to close their offices for public business at 1 p.m. on Thursdays. After much discussion, it was unanimously decided to sunport the postmasters 111 their endeavour to obtain a weekly half- holiday. It was decided to close the shops throughout the district on Monday and Tuesday (Whit week). The meeting was well attended. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
Trealaw.
Trealaw. The Rev. W. J. Britton. Pentre. delivered a very interesting lecture oil "John Wesley: His Life and Work," at Calvary (E.W.) Trealaw, on Monday evening last. Mr. John Llewellyn, Peny graig, occupied the chair. The attend- ance was rather meagre, but those wo were present were amply repaid for theif presence. An open-air meeting in 0011' nection with this church is held everY, Saturday evening opposite the Colliers Arms, Trealaw, and very good results accrue therefrom.
