Owing to the death of the King, the luncheon proceedings at the Pavilion Skating Rink (kindly lent for the occa- sion) were very brief, the speeches, ex- cept that of the Chairman, being entirely dispensed with as a mark of sympathy Mth the Royal mourners. Mr. Leonard Llewelyn, who presided (in the absence of Mr. D. A. Thomas, M.P.), Proposed the loyal toast, and remarked that everyone knew that, had it not been J^r the express wieli of His Majesty King ^fcorge Y. that no holiday engagements be postponed on account of the ^ath of the King they would not be able Jo hold the show that day. He was sure that their niost heartfelt sympathy went Out towards the Royal Family in their Sreat bereavement, and they all trusted that King George V. would follow in the "IDOtsteps of the great Monarch who had Just passed away. He regretted also that president of the show, Mr. D. A. Thomas M.P., was unable to. be present Owing to the death of his brother, who buried only on Saturday last. Mr. %mas had asked him (Mr. Llewelyn) to express his great regret that he could 1l.ot be with them that day. Ferndale Horse Show.
Ferndale Horse Show. Record Entries and Exhibits The sixteenth annual horse show under the auspices of the Ferndale Horse Show Society was held on Whit-Monday last on the beautiful Darran Lake Grounds, in glorious weather, before a record attend- ance. The number of entries this year was a record one, and the quality of the exhibits was excellent, and included prize- winners at the Hackney and Olympic Shows. Great interest was evinced in the jumping competitions, the entries for this class numbering over 50. Other items which proved very interesting "were ambu- lance, shoeing, and the rope splicing com- petitions. The Ferndale Prize Band (under the conductorship of Mr. S. Rad- cliffe) was in attendance, and gave a fine selection of music throughout the day. The show was a huge success in every detail, and reflects the greatest credit on the indefatigable secretary, Mr. W. J. Davies, Brynbedw, 'rylorstown, and all those who took part in the arrangements. The programme was adhered to with a precision which made it easy to follow the long list of competitions. Judgets: Saddle horses: Messrs. Francis C. James Thomas, J.P.) said that all felt deeply the loss the country had sustained in the death of the late King, wno had gained for himself the title of '• The World's Peacemaker." They all sympathised with the Queen-Mother in her sad bereavement, and trusted that Almighty God would give her strength in her dark hour of trial. They were to be, however, congratulated upon the fact that in King George V. they had a worthy successor who would follow the footsteps of his illustrious father. The toast of Long life to the King was then enthusiastically drank. The President then proposed the Fern- dale Horse Show Society, and said that in the year 1903 the entries were only 251 and the prizes amounted to only £198. This year the entries had increased to 415 and the prizes to £ 325 (loud applause). He was told by the judges that theirs was a difficult task, as they naa oeiore IJUöm that day the best horses in Great Britain. iVIr. D. Rees (veterinary surgeon) re- sponded on behalf of the committee, and thanked the company for the way they had received the toast. The Ferndale show, he said, was still on the increase, and the title a Wellli Islington would shortly fail to convey its importance. Seventeen years ago, the judges at their ishow declared that the horses then shown were the best they had seen, but to-day those horses would not receive a com- mended card (laughter and applause). Dr. W. W. David proposed the toast of The Judges," and Messrs. Carnley and Alexander responded. Dr. T. W. Parry proposed The Presi- dent," and Mr. Thomas briefly responded. At the conclusion of the proceedings, the Ferndale Prize Band played the National Anthem, and the large attend- ance bared heads in sympathy with the Royal Family. Awards — CART HORSES.
