Notes and News. MR. KEIR HARDIE, M.P., has just com- pleted a new work on Socialism. A MOVEMENT is on foot in South Wales and Monmouthshire to establish a Welsh School for Mining. PRINCIPAL ROBERTS, of Aberystwyth, has been spending the Christmas vacation with Lord Rendel in the South of France. AN article in a South Wales paper was headed "Pontypridd Bill in Parliament." It was not an account of Mr. William Abraham's work during the past session. THE Rev. John Thomas, of Merthyr, was last week presented with his portrait in oils by the members of Soar Congregational Chapel. The portrait was painted by Mr. Christopher Williams, of London. WELSH is gradually becoming a universal language. A telegram in Welsh came all the way from Spain to Criccieth during the Christmas holidays. Mr. D. Lloyd-George, M.P., was the sender. What will Cardiff say to this ? THERE was a bit of a scene at the Court house, Carmarthen, last Friday, between Mr. W. Llewelyn Williams, M.P., and the Earl of Cawdor. The Earl thought he could give a lesson in the law of evidence to the young H.P., but he soon found that he had met with more than his match in the popular and learned barrister that represents that town in Parliament. OWING to the death of Mr. Samuel Smith, the ex-M.P. for Flint, the arrangements with regard to the journey proposed by Mr. Wm. Jones, M.P., to the Khassia Hills and other places, have had to be modified for the present. The friends of the popular member for Arvon are pleased to hear that he has greatly benefited by the will of his late fellow traveller and admirer. BRITISH trade during the past year was the largest on record. Even to speak about Tariff Reform," said an enthusiastic Chamberlainite the other day, has greatly improved our business, but it would have increased fivefold were we to adopt the system." There is no limit to these clever advocates' arguments. A CORRESPONDENT writes Could any readers of the KELT tell me whether Mr. Vaughan Davies now represents Cardigan- shire ? (Yes, we believe that Mr. Davies is still supposed to represent Cardiland.) SOME of the Cardiff people seem to have Mafeking on the brain. One of the newest built streets in the city is called Mafeking Road." IN his last annual report the Tregaron County School headmaster states that several of the girls in the school are wearing blouses made by themselves." Dyna ferched clefar sydd yn Tregaron! THE latest official statistics show that the Welsh Independents have 179,526 members, the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists 189,164 members, the Baptists 146,188 members, and the Welsh Wesleyans 43,618 members in Wales. A PRIZE was offered at Meirion Eisteddfod for the best knitted knickerbocer stock- ings." Why knickerbocer ? THE Vicar of Llanilar's poultry were visited by Reynard at Christmastide, and the sly visitor liberally helped himself to a dozen of the best birds. We are sorry for the genial Vicar. AT Dolgelly Meirion Eisteddfod the competitions included a prize for the best translation of Welsh into French." The winner proved to be Un o Gymry Llun- dain," but his real name did not transpire. Who was he ? WELSH AT CARDIFF.—Considering that Cardiff is a cosmopolitan city, it is a striking fact that over 4,000 parents in the city recently voted in favour of Welsh being compulsorily taught in the local elementary schools. Moreover, had every burgess polled the number in favour of compulsory Welsh would certainly be another 2,000 at least. It was hardly to be expected that a majority of the Cardiff parents would sup- port compulsory Welsh seeing that the place contains thousands of people from England, Scotland, Ireland, and continental countries who have no sympathy with Welsh national interests. But even if Welsh is not taught compulsorily in the local schools in the future, it is certain that the Welsh language will be accorded fair play, and facilities given for its teaching, for the fact that there are several thousand parents in the city who desire to have Welsh taught is a fact that cannot be lightly ignored by the education authority. One thing at any rate is certain, viz., that the Cardiff daily liberal paper, and its evening issue, have shown no sympathy whatsoever with the Welsh language movement. A WELSH society has been formed at Aberystwyth. This is a step in the right direction, and one that ought to have been taken in the town many years ago. But better late than never. THE man who argues that there has been "no undue partisanship" manifested in the creation of magistrates must either be a great joker or a political enthusiast. IT is stated that nothing pleased Mr. Paul Roos, the captain of the South African Football team, more than the pretty little doll attired in complete Welsh costume, which was presented to him at Llanelly. He told the Llanelly footballers that the little Welsh lady" would occupy a permanent place in his South African home. THE two chief Welsh wards of Cardiff are Cathays and Splott. More native Welsh- men live in those wards than in any other part of the City. This is how they voted in the recent Welsh language poll For compulsory Welsh in the Majority Schools. Against against. Cathays 598 734 136 Splott 430 587 157 It is evident from these figures that the Welshmen were strongly in favour of com- pulsory Welsh. ———— The fact that the King and Queen of Great Britain have promised to act as patrons of the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales at Llangollen in 1908 ought to give the gathering a decided fillip. "Royal patronage" still goes a long way even in these democratic days. THE inhabitants of Llandudno are very precise in all their movements. A local tea- party held this week was advertised to commence at 4.29 p.m. Half-past four, we would imagine, would be too late to join such a punctual party. IT is proposed to raise a memorial in Cardiff to the late Sir Edward Reed. Sir Edward rendered many services to the capital of Wales, and as both political parties can claim him as a member the movement is sure to meet with the success it deserves.
