A WELSH MINER= VIOLINIST. An Appeal for Funds. In our last issue we made an appeal for funds to assist the young Welsh miner- violinist, Tom Jones, to complete his studies at the Hampstead Conservatoire. Several friends have promised their assistance to the movement, and by the middle of September we hope to be able to announce a long list of subscriptions. As this fund is likely to extend over a period of two years or two years and a half, promises will be thankfully received for payment during that period. It might be added that Mr. Tom Jones has had an offer from the Institution, at which he is studying, for an extended term of his scholarship, therefore it is hoped by those interested, that the fund raised will be sufficient to enable him to accept this kind offer. Notes and News.
AT the monthly meeting of the Welsh Club, held last week, thirty new members were enrolled as a commencement for the third year series. Only a few of the old members have been unable to continue their support to the institution, and if a substantial increase of new members can be secured for the coming winter session, it ought to enable the directors to make the club a decided success. THE new Fishguard route of the G.W.R. has been very well patronised during the present season in spite of the unsettled state of the weather. Touring in Ireland as well as in Wales will become an easy as well as a moderately cheap holiday with these new and improved railway facilities. This week's issue of Y Goleuad is printed with deep rules, as if the paper was in mourning after some departed friend. On looking through its pages we notice that the leader is an article on the proposed English churches for Welsh Methodists in London. Are we to infer that the proprietor is in mourning already after the departure of the Welsh London churches? If such is the case, we can assure him that they are very much alive, and that the advocates of the English element are very few and quite insignificant. As the Emlyn Evans Testimonial has to be closed in time for the Swansea Eisteddfod on the 20th of this month, we trust that all our proposed subscribers from London will send their mite without delay to the local secretary, Mr. E. Vincent Evans, 64, Chancery Lane, W.C. It will be gratifying to Mr. Emlyn Evans's admirers to hear that the sum already in hand amounts to nearly five hun- dred pounds. MR. W. EVELYN EDWARDS, the Welsh Tenor at St. Benet's church, played an important part the other day in saving a life at the Surrey Commercial Docks. A man was dis- covered in an unconscious state in one of the Docks, and after being brought to the bank efforts were made to restore animation. Mr. Edwards applied the Howard method to the case, and after about twenty minutes' effort the patient began to breathe regularly. The system was continued for another hour, when the doctor present declared that the man was well enough to be removed to the Infirmary. It will pay all interested to get Allen Pearce's catalogue.
