Notes and News.
Notes and News. THE new flying machine has proved a success. Motor cars will soon be out of date. THERE was as much Welsh heard at Swansea this year as there was at Carnar- von last year. It is evident that the Eisteddfod is doing some good work. No M.P.'s were present at this year's gathering in Swansea save those who had been asked to take part. Only one or two remained at their posts in the Commons, but what had become of the remainder ? THE Church Commission evidence will be published at an early date. This will give no indication as to the recommendations, and it is doubtful whether anyone will care much what those will be when they are made public. COAL is still going up, and bread has advanced in price. Soap, however, is going down. Thank heaven for a reduction some- where. We shall be able to freeze and starve clean anyway. Miss MARY DAVIES and the late Madame Edith Wynne were the great stars at the London Eisteddfod in 1887. Who will take their places in 1909 ? MR. G. BERNARD SHAW'S escape on the Welsh Hills was greatly exaggerated in the English press. It was a simple case of not lost but gone before," and he asked the faithful to follow, but as usual they did not. LIMERICKS appear to be all the rage just now, and our englyn-makers had better turn to it. We, however, must protest when a South Wales journal calls its missing line competition as cystadleuaeth y llinell goch." THE Rev. R. J. Campbell objects to charges being made for seats in any building where he preaches. He wants the gospel to be made free, and all he expects to make out of any engagement is his railway fare. THE captain of the Pontardawe Football Club is Islwyn B. Phillips. He is not, how- ever, a relation of the great Welsh poet. IT is not only in Wales that two languages are taught in the schools. English and French are taught in Canada and Mauritius, English and Dutch in the Transvaal and Cape Colony English and Irish in Ireland, and English and Gaelic in the Highlands of Scotland. MR. JOHN GIBSON, of Aberystwyth, now calls himself a Welsh Nationalist." Heaven preserve us! THE Rev. Thomas Levi, the veteran Welsh Calvinistic Methodist minister of Aberyst- wyth, is described as the Grand Old Man of the Methodists of Wales." As editor of the TrysorfcCr Plant, Mr. Levi is known to Welshmen all the world over. MR. DAVID EVANS, Mus. Bac., Cardiff, who conducted the great Methodist Cymanfa at Swansea Eisteddfod Pavilion, was, prior to his removal to the Welsh Metropolis, choir master and organist at Jewin Chapel, London. A SWANSEA daily relates a good story. It seems that a Clydach tailor recently sup- plied a Skewen pastor with a new suit, and this was how the latter acknowledged the receipt of it:- Daeth y siwt yn sydyn iawn, Braidd heb wybod; Ynddi cafwyd llwyr foddhad, Fel un barod; Nid yw'n ormod na rhy fach, Mae yn ffitio Derbyn ddiolch calon iach, 'Rwyn ei leicio. If, however, we are to judge the garment by this example of poetry," it must have been awful. EVERYTHING is made the subject of a picture postcard these days. The Eistedd- fod Gorsedd is the latest. AMONGST recent visitors to the Devil's Bridge Falls, Cardiganshire, was Mr. S. L. Hughes, Sub Rosa," of the Morning Leader. It is stated that the brilliant journalist was impressed with the beauty of the Falls. MR. 'EVAN ROBERTS'S (the Revivalist) grandmother recently died at the ripe age of 92 years. THERE is a striking revival of Welsh nationalism at Pontypridd. The local Cymmrodorion Society is growing rapidly, and there is renewed interest being taken in Welsh national questions.
