MR. J. HOPKINS. (Great Western and Metropolitan Dairies.) LONDON AND ITS MILK SUPPLY. The thirty-second annual Dairy Show that will be held at the Agricultural Hall, London, during the coming week promises to be of unusual interest to the dairy trade in general, and to the London milk retailer in particular. The question of the regulation of milk supplies, and the much discussed State or municipal control, will have particular atten- tion during the week, while the several new improvements, both in appliances and the method of preparing milk for distribution, will have due prominence at the many exhibits that have been arranged for the public. That the milk trade has been in a state of unrest for some time past is generally ad- mitted, and the severe strictures that have been passed on some retailers in London during the past few years have been the means of causing a great deal of unnecessary suspicion and uncalled for denunciations of the trade as a whole. No one would venture to suggest that the trade is free from blemishes, but1 the defects are rapidly dis- appearing, and we doubt if any other trade or industry has made such rapid strides towards perfecting its system, and maintain- ing a pure quality, as has been done in the dairy trade of London. On all sides the consumer is, protected by elaborate and stringent laws, and the system of milk sampling and cowshed inspection, under the direction of so many medical officers of health, is most perfect. This is how it should be, and no one welcomes the strict enforce- ment of such laws as the dairyman himself. The main trouble that the London milk vendor has to contend with in these days is the unfair enforcement of the many regula- tions that have been applied to the supply of milk. Though every borough in London has adopted all the recognised rules for the safeguarding of a pure supply, it is a notor- ious fact that in many rural parts-districts that supply London with milk-many of these regulations have not been enforced., Consequently should a tradesman in London be found to be in possession of impure milk, and condemned by the London authorities, it is unfair that the local farmer, who is the real culprit, can escape scot free. There are many modifications required in the present administration of the Acts that apply to the trade, and no doubt due consideration will be given to them at the many conferences that will be held during the coming week. DISTRIBUTION OF MILK. One of the chief agencies for the distribu- tion of milk in London to-day is The Great Western and Metropolitan Dairies, Ltd., of Harrow Road, W. This concern has secured the sole milk product of many of the counties within easy access to London, and its ex- tensive factories are equipped on the most up-to-date system. Every morning hundreds of their vans congregate to the several rail- way headquarters, and are despatched with their heavy loads of milk to all parts of the Metropolis. The firm gives employment to a large number of Welshmen, and two of its directors hail from the Principality, viz, Mr. William Price and Mr. Thomas Davies. Its general secretary, Mr. Hopkins, will be happy to give full particulars as to the method of supply, &c., on receipt of applica- tion. MR. H. WILLINGS. Messrs. Willings C- Co., the well known Dairy Ageiits, will have a prominent stall at the Dairy Show during the coming week. All intending purchasers would do well to 19 consult Messrs. Willings, inasmuch as their wide experience and practical knowledge of the Trade would be of great value in deciding upon the many concerns that are to-day in the market. During the last few years a large number of businesses have passed through their hands, and the many recommendations they secure is sure proof of their straightforwardness in all their dealings.
