Notes and News.
Notes and News. After the discord of a General Election, let us prepare for an harmonious gathering of all Welsh parties on St. David's Day. London will celebrate the memory of the Patron Saint by holding two religious festivals and two sumptuous dinners The annual national feast will be held at the Trocadero this year, when Sir E. Vincent Evans will preside, and a large number of political celebrities, of both parties, will be present. Lord Cawdor has been the chief ruler of Wales for the past four years. In the pre- sent Parliament, however, his work will be taken up by the two Conservative M.P.'s in the lower house. Will the Liberals create more Peers ? It is a remarkable fact that nearly all the extreme Tories in the House of Lords at present were created by Liberal ministries. During the recent campaigns in Wales one of the Liberal members who was seeking re-election had a torchlight procession formed by the local Liberal Association in his honour, in a certain town within his constituency. As the member had not visited the town during the past four years, one of the Con- servative tradesmen facetiously remarked that "the poor beggar does not know his way about here, so his friends must show him the way." We shall have a repetition of the General Election oratory in London during the next fortnight. The fight for the County Council will be one of the most stubborn in the history of that body. The Municipal Reform party is on the defensive this time, neverthe- less it means to maintain its strong hold on the metropolis that it secured three years ago. Many well-known Welshmen are in- cluded among the candidates for municipal honours. In the middle ages the village of Islington, then about a mile outside London, was a favourite resort of Welsh City merchants. To-day it is within the metropolitan area, and contains a large colony of representa- tives from the Principality. One of the members for South Islington on the L.C.C. is a Welshman-Mr. Howell J. Williams-and we notice that of the four candidates for East Islington in the coming municipal con- test three are Welshmen, viz,, Messrs. Crole Rees, P. Simner, and A. A. Thomas. The General Election was completed on Monday by the announcement of the result of the poll in the Orkney and Shetland Islands as follows — Mr. J. Cathcart Wason (R) 4117 Mr. T. W. Hemsley (U) 994 Majority 3123 The election of Mr. Wason makes the state of parties in the completed House as follows:— Liberals 275 Labour 40 Nationalists 72 Ind. Nationalists 10 Unionists 273 This means a majority of 124 against the House of Lords. Mr. Keir Hardie declared at Mountain Ash last Monday that, So far as we-the Labour members-are concerned at the present time, my own opinion is that we shall support the Government in any course it may take in connection with the Budget or the House of Lords. That is to say, whichever they choose to take first is no concern of ours. But one thing we shall try to do when the question of the House of Lords comes before the Commons, we shall once more give the country a lead by de- manding that not only shall the veto be modified, but the House of Lords itself be swept away." In Wales, as in other parts of the United Kingdom, St. Valentine's Day is almost dead." With characteristic enthusiasm the Cardiff Cymmrodorion have taken up the question of a Welsh Secretary of State in a practical manner. The Cardiff Cymmrodorion are a fighting body, and are doing splendid service for Welsh Nationalism. Welshmen must fight if they are to get their national rights. Reforms are secured only after persistent agitation. Much indignation has been caused in Football circles of South Wales, and an in- quiry by the Welsh Union is being demanded into the cause of, and the responsibilities for, the extraordinary exhibition of rough play and ill temper in the match between Newport and Cardiff at Newport on Saturday last,
