Notes and News. A large number of Welshmen from lands across the seas are on a visit to the old country this month. The proclamation of the National Eistedd- fod at Carmarthen proved a great success, and has given the Welsh tongue a new lease in Merlin's old town. It is hoped to secure the presence of the Prince of Wales to lay the foundation stone of the National Library at Aberystwyth next year. There is a keen contest among would-be Parliamentary aspirants for the coming vacant seats in Welsh constituencies. It is anticipated that, at least, six vacancies will occur at the next General Election. It has been arranged that a deputation on behalf of Welsh Nonconformists will visit the Welsh Parliamentary Party at an early date in order to press the urgency of a Chapel Sites Bill and the Welsh Disestab- lishment Bill. Lord Tredegar was in a happy mood at, the annual Cymmrodorion conversazione held on Tuesday last, and made a neat little speech of thanks to the Drapers Company for lending their spacious hall for the event, and for their continued support to Welsh education. The Gorsedd of the Bards of Brittany will be held at Nantes on the 1st of August this year. The bardic fraternity of Llydaw have sent a cordial invitation to a number of representatives from Wales to be present on the occasion. Sir T. Marchant Williams is one of the most ardent Eisteddfodwyr we have to-day, and his address on the maen Hog at Car- marthen was highly appreciated by the huge crowd that listened to it. A new feature in the Carmarthen Eistedd- fod prize list is a literary competition con- fined to Welshmen from across the seas. It is an essay on the opinion of Welshmen abroad of the land of their birth. Evidently it ought to produce a number of interesting essays. It is hoped that a number of the London Eisteddfod prize poems and essays will be published in time for distribution at the Colwyn Bay Eisteddfod. Many of the prize essays at last year's gathering are of very high literary merit. Madame Clara Novello Davies's musical talent is not solely confined to teaching music and the conductorship of choirs, for we find that she has recently composed some very pleasing songs. One of her latest, "Dear Memories," was sung with much effect at the Cymmrodorion conversazione last Tuesday by a pupil of the gifted Welsh- woman Mr. Wilfrid Douthitt a very pleasing and gifted baritone vocalist. The Wiltshire County Education Autho- rity propose to teach village scholars plough- ing, thatching, agricultural hedging, pruning, tree planting, &c., as part of the regular curriculum. Why cannot Cardigan- shire, Carmarthenshire, and other Welsh county councils, follow suit ? The Baby's World, the new sixpenny illustrated monthly magazine started by Mr. Berry, of London (and eldest son of Alder- man J. Berry, J.P., Merthyr), is proving a big success. It has had a rapid sale all over the country. The magazine is well edited and an exceedingly interesting journal. The Army Council have approved of the Territorial battalions of the Army troops attached to the Welsh division being bri- gaded and designated the South Wales Brigade." The brigade to take the place of the South Wales Brigade in the Welsh division will be designated the Welsh Border Brigade." Modern Society remarks :—" It is interest- ing to note that Mr. Lewys James, the well- known Welsh baritone, who appeared in the title-role of "Figaro" last Wednesday at His Majesty's Theatre, received his musical education entirely in England, having studied from the commencement-and is still studying-under Mme Clara Novello Davies, the well-known voice trainer." Madame Clara Novello Davies is the founder of the original Royal Welsh Ladies' Choir, and the daughter of Mr. Jacob Davies, Cardiff. Mr. Justice Lawrence, in charging the grand jury at the summer assizes at Mon- mouth, said that although there were only four cases, the calendar was "the most
