Notes and News.
Notes and News. The world of politics is at rest, and our Senators are all away enjoying their much- talked-of holiday. This is the season for the big gooseberry or sea serpent, but as such subjects have become so common our leading journals have turned, for a change, to abuse the Terri- torial forces. Mr. Keir Hardie is of opinion that the Crown is again becoming too powerful a factor in our public life. His call to the democracy to assert itself is none too early. The younger section of Welsh politicians did yeoman service during the last Parlia- mentary session, and their activity has created quite a flutter among the old school of diners out and smoking-room habitu- ates." Sir E. Vincent Evans has promised to deliver an address to the Birmingham Welsh National Society at its opening session in October. The subject of the discourse will be The Better Preservation of Welsh Antiquities." The Rev. J. C. Morrice, M.A., curate of Llandegfan, a well-known Welsh author and formerly minor canon of Bangor Cathedral, has been appointed rector of Festiniog cum Maentwrog, in succession to the Rev. C. P. Price, who has been appointed to Machyn- lleth. The living of Festiniog cum Maen- twrog is of the net value of Y,266 with house. Amongst the pictures shown on the panels of the G. W.R. carriages is one of Tyn-y- cornet, Dolgelly." Tyn y cornet is probably the Paddington way of spelling the Welsh name! A splendid old Welsh soldier has passed to his rest in the person of Mr. Charles Palmer, who died at Resolven, Vale of Neath, at the age of 82 years. Deceased was born in Wales. He served with the 43rd regi- ment, and saw active service in the Crimea and the Indian mutiny, and secured both Crimean and Mutiny medalr., the former with three clasps-Alma, Inkerman, and Sevastopol—and came through both wars unscathed. __m_- During a recent visit to Aberystwyth," writes a correspondent, I was struck with the fact that nearly all the people spoke English as they left the Welsh chapels at the termination of the services. Were they too proud to speak Welsh ? 'Twas not always thus. Welsh speaking, alas! is greatly on the decay at Aberystwyth." Mr. J. Kyrle Fletcher, the newly-elected President of the Newport Welsh Society, is a native of Ross. Although an Englishman, he is an intense admirer of Welsh history and literature, and is an authority on anti- quarian matters. He has written several books. His My Lord Worcester" had a big circulation, whilst his Gwentian poems of Dafydd Benwyn," published this year, has also received a good reception. Mr. Fletcher is a genial gentleman, and is held in high esteem at Newport. Senor Jose Canalejas, the Premier of Spain, has confessed to the reporter of a Spanish newspaper that he is a great admirer of Mr. Lloyd George, from whose Parlia- mentary speeches and study of his recent Budget he has learned the theory of un7 earned increment, which he proposes to apply to land tenure. Senor Jose Canalejas is a strong man. It was only a strong man who could deal with the recent crisis in Spain like he dealt with it. A CELT correspondent writes: The toleration allowed in this country was strikingly brought home to my mind the other day. Walking down a public street in Cardiff I saw boldly exhibited for sale in a newsagent's shop a copy of Freedom, the organ of the Anarchist community. Sup- posing they showed that paper in a news- agent's shop in Germany, or even France, what would happen ? The minister in attendance at Balmoral during the first week in September will be the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Mr. Lloyd George will return from his visit to the Continent by the end of this month, and will leave Balmoral in time to attend the Welsh National Eisteddfod at Colwyn Bay. Mr. David Davies, M.P., of Llandinam, is about to make extensive alterations and additions to the famous residence at Llan- dinam. His mother and sister are to reside at Plas Dinam, and the additional premises will be utilised as the home of the young squire and his wife.
