FRENNI FAWR NOTES. SOUTH AFRicA.The Rev. E. Rees (Dyfed), Cardiff, delivered an excellent lecture on this subject at Newchapel on the 14th inst. It was thought the ronowned poet would express his views on the present war, but he avoided making any remarks thereon, which greatly surprised both Jingoes and Pro-Boers. Mr Jonah Evans, Pontseliy, took the chair, and the vote of thanks was given by Mr W. Hughes, Blaen- ffos School, and the R-ev. J. Coedfryn Davies, Cilgwyn. GRAMAPHONE.—The Llanfyrnach Company of Gramophonists have been busily engaged in giving entertainments at different places. The Hermon concert was presided over by Mr J. Davies, School- master; at Treleoh Mr Thomas" Jones, Pantyffynon, was chairman while Mr E. H. James, J.P., Ponty- gafel, was president at Glaadwr. At the two former places the usual trio of Davieses performed, while Mr D. Stephens was stage-manager at the latter. The entertainments, hitherto, have been thoroughly appreciated. SCHOOL -BOA.UD. -The members of the Clydey School Board have chosen a new member to fill the vacancy caused in their quorum by the death of Mr T. Evans. Mr D. Griffiths, Star Factory, was unanimously voted to the seat. This board, after the usual custom, is formed upon sectarian linep and now consists of one Methodist, one Baptist, and three Congregationalists. The Church'of England, it will be seen, is not represented. Would it not be fairer to have one Churchman thereon, instead of three members from another religious body ? POPERY.-Roman Catholicism is on tJ,¡,G increase in Wales, and at present there are 93 causes in the Principality, between churches and missions. The nearest one to this vicinity will be found at Llechryd, in the vale of Teify, where a priest occasionally comes to administer. Time will prove if a suitable building for ceremonial purposes will be built at the village. WELCOME HOME.—The Rev. W. Griffiths, Amana, Carnarvonshire, is retiring from the ministry after serving over 40 years, and will make' his residence at Glogue Station with his sister. Mr Griffiths was very popular in North Wales, and on his departure was presented with a beautiful oil of himself. Years ago he was also the recipient of an illuminated address from the members of his churches. May the evening of his life be calm and peaceful. "WAS.—Mr H. E. H. James, of the Cardiff University, will soon deliver a lecture at Glandwr Vestry on the Transvaal war. Mr James holds different opinions to the majority on the causes of this terrible disaster, and at the end of the meeting questions and criticisms will be invited. Liberty of speech is one of the great blessings we enjoy in Britain, and fair play should be given to all ex- presfckms that tend to the enthroning of Truth. MONUMENT.—The movement to raise a fund for the purpose of erecting a monument on the grave of the late Mr John Owen, Glogue, it is feared, is as dead as Queen Anne. No whisper is beard about it nowadays, and it is likely to be useless to wait any longer for an awakening. The responsibility of letting the matter drop lies entirely on two or three shoulders, from whom better things might be expected. PABO.—Readers of Pabo'r Offeiriad" will prob- ably be unable to know what place is the one called Dingeraiiit in page 110. Dingeraint is an ancient narnt; for Kilgerran, it being called so in Brut y Tywysogion" and the "Red Book of Hergest. the meaning thereof being Dinas Geraint. The proper form ot the present name is Cilgeraint, but who this Gerai&t was historians do not tell. Kilgerran is a lively village. Not lonlg since a military tourn- ament was held there, and in a few weeks hence a grand eisteddfod will come off at the same place to celebrate the closing century. BHOSLYN.—The Rhoslyn Gramophone Society is in full swing, it3 head member being Mr John Tlio-na^, Tvcwtti, who successfully aided at the entertainments by Mr James Thomas, Hendrewih-m, and others. Grand performances have been given by this com piny at Bwlobygroes, Capel I wan, Pen- vraun, K seaside Emlyn, &o., and every audience is dt ii.iiu:d with the talking machine and its wondeis. FROM TiF FRONT.—Mr Ezer Uvaus, Llanfyrnaob, recently ic eiv;,t-t a letter from his son, Col.-Sergeant David Evans, of the 2nd Gloucester Regiment, written on the eve of one of the engagements near Paardeberg. The writer and his brother, Corporal Samuel Evans, were quite well then. So far as is A ail those of this district who are in the tho,:ro of war have escaped uninjured. It will be t .e¡jb0red that the above-named regiment escorted f e ;nd his men to Cape Town after their uncon- uiuoiiui surrender. TEMPERANCE.-The teetotal cause is in a flourish. ing state at Hermon Chapel, and many meetings have been held during the past winter. The most interesting of all was the one last Monday night, when Mr J. Rees, Schoolmaster, Tegryn, exhibited some splendid views by magio lantern from the well- known book, Buy your own Cherries ■ (Kirton). Mr Rees explained at length the connection of the pictures, and Mr D. Jenkins, Nentyddisaf, filled the chair. WILL.-The perusal of the notable will of the late Alderman David Davies, Merthyr, has occasioned a great deal of criticism in these parts. Faithfulness to one's own denomination is an admirable trait in every man's character, but it is possible to carry suoh to extremes. It is not our intention to remark any- thing on the doings of a man who has gone too far to defend himself. OUTWARD BOUND.-One of the able men brought up on the Frenni slopes is the Rev. D. Phillips, Tre- harris, and his welfare is wished on his visit to America. Mr Phillips has been lately in indifferent health, and it is hoped the voyage will recruit the same. We earnestly hope for his speedy return from the land of the setting sun and Jonathan. CEITIQUK.—A corresponding assuming the name of Nos Da" finds fault with our report of certain concerts reoently held in this locality. This critic is guilty of black varnishing the promoters of those entertainments, and his sarcastic insinuations are groundless and unbearable. We say again that the singing was equal to what we generally get at ordi- nary meetings. Boreu Da" in his defence is strong in argument against his opponent. The authorship of both correspondencies have been attri- buted to these quarters—well, well! But this is not to be wondered at so muoh, as almost every word of looal intelligence appearing in the Press during the hst few years have been thrown in our teeth. Nos Da has no right to blame one for being a relative of his grandmother, and are we not at liberty to follow any young lady without the consent of this inquisitive scribbler ? For the other points at issue he has more than his match already ,on the field. EXIT.-With this the usual Frenni Fawr Notes will be discontinued for sufficient personal reasons. Daring our eighteen months term as reporter we have always endeavoured to stick to the truth, but have a few times inadvertently erred. One author has it that every parting is the image of death," and wo regret to have to take the parting step. It is possible tha.t we shall ro-appear some day, but for tiro present we must cancel our journalistic engage- ments, and wish all the readers Good-bye." Da Lv'oh a dibechod."
