Notes and News.
Notes and News. AT the recent London Toy Dog Show, Mr. H. Powell, of Cardiff, exhibited the smallest King Charles toy spaniel that has ever been seen on the show bench, weighing only 4 lb. The ladies crowded around this beautiful midget all day, and it could readily have been sold for a large sum. Considerable interest has been created in South Wales at the announcement that Mr. John Lodwig, now in the employ of the Great Western Railway Company at Johan- nesburg, is to be married in June next to Miss Steyn, daughter of the ex-President of the Orange Fiee State. Mr. Lodwig, prior to going to South Africa four years ago, lived at Swansea and previously, at Ponty- pridd. His parents live near Ammanford. The performance of Twm Shon Catti," by the pupils of Tregaron County School, was a decided success, and they are to be heartily congratulated. Twm Shon Catti was not the unscrupulous robber would-be historians have represented him to be. He was a magistrate for Brecon shire and first Mayor of Tregaron. The following lines were recited at the end of the court" by the prisoner (at the performance alluded to) on his being set free- Bendith Duw ar Twm Shon Catti Rhoes y "not" o flaen y "guilty." Pe rhesai'r "guilty heb y not Am fy ngwddf buasai'r knot." PERFORMANCES of dramatised local his- torical incidents should be encouraged. Every district in Wales teems with them, and it would be instructive if every county school in Wales performed a local drama every Christmastide. THE Tregaron performance is in pleasant contrast to that of the Aberayron County School. The Aberayron pupils at their entertainment gave a sketch entitled A Tipsy Servant" and "A Christy Minstrel" performance, winding up with God Save the King." What a ridiculous breaking up entertainment for a Welsh County School! Why not, for instance, have got up a drama based on the life of Prince Cadwgan, a genius who lived a considerable time in the district in the olden times ? MR. S. T. EVANS, K.C., M.P., will be the guest of the National Liberal Club at its next house dinner. He will speak on The Second Ballot at Elections," and the chair on that occasion will be taken by Dr. T. J. Macnamara, M.P. We also understand that a dinner in honour of the Right Hon. D. Lloyd-George, M.P., will shortly be given by the same Club. A LONDON Sunday paper (a Liberal one, by the way) has been billing Glamorganshire with illustrated posters announcing the publication in its pages of articles by John Lee, the man who could not be hung." One is sorry for the taste of people who like to read such sensational stuff. Miss MAY JOHN, R.A.M., who is now a resident in Cardiff, continues to achieve great musical success. On New Year's Eve and New Year's Night she filled important engagements in Blaenau Festiniog and Flint respectively, and has been engaged for the performance of "Stabat Mater" at Cardiff. In February, she will sing at a big concert in the Town Hall, Birmingham, and at a similar function in Yorkshire during the first week in March. THE astounding statement has been made at South Wales Socialist public meetings that the Liberal had done no more than the Tory for working men." This is, of course, untrue. Why, the fact that the working man got his vote through the Liberal Party, is, alone, one great reason why the democracy should respect the name of Liberalism. ACCORDING to the Liverpool Post, the services held at the Welsh churches in that city on Christmas day were more largely attended than they ever were on previous Christmas days, and that the tendency to observe the day more in accord with its solemnity and purpose was growing." In Wales itself, we regret to say, we have not noticed a similar tendency. AT the last meeting of the Bangor College Council, Mr. L. D. Jones (Llew Tegid), was re-appointed as organising secretary to the Building Fund for another three years. It was announced that the first portion of the new buildings will be commenced early in the new year, and it is hoped that within two summers the establishment will be nearly completed. Mr. H. W. THOMAS, a partner in the Anglesey firm of solicitors, Messrs. Lloyd, Griffith and Williams, has announced his intention of relinquishing the law and taking orders in the Church of England. Mr. Thomas is a son of the late Canon Thomas, of Holyhead, and" Morfudd Eryri;" and his brother, Mr. Lorimer Thomas, is professor of Welsh at Lampeter College.
