Notes and News. The problem of the near future-Who is to govern this country, the Lords or the people ? England's wealth and London's poverty were effectively demonstrated on the Thames during the present week. A grand array of Britain's battleships anchored at the mouth of the Thames. Yet London had not a single boat to convey passengers to view them. SIR ISAMBARD OWEN Sir Isambard Owen, who has just been appointed Principal of Bristol College, is Deputy Chancellor of the University of Wales, and has done yeoman service for a generation on behalf of Welsh Education. The House of Commons is busily engaged on the great Budget, and members have to sit up all night in order to discuss its various clauses. It is expected that the House of Lords will be able to consider its many proposals early in September. To-day, London will hold a demonstration in Hyde Park in favour of the Land Tax policy as embodied in the Budget. Recent bye-elections prove that the Budget is favourably received throughout the country. In Derbyshire, however, things were some- what different, and the re-election of Mr. Partington was stoutly opposed by the liquor and landed interests, as well as by the country gentry generally. A statue in memory of the late Sir Wilfrid Lawson was unveiled by Mr. Asquith in the Victoria Embankment Gardens on Tuesday last. A glowing tribute to the memory of that genial grand old man of temperance was paid by the Prime Minister. A letter was recently received at Bangor bearing the following address: The pro- prietor of Bangor Cathedral." The postman delivered it to the parish clerk. One of the most important Nonconformist pastorates in South Wales is Jerusalem Church, Ton, Pentre, Rhondda Valley. The Rev. H. M. Jones, Trefecca College, has been appointed to the Pastorate. The second ascent ever made of the central gully of the Lliwedd, Snowdon, has just been accomplished by Messrs. E. H. Ash- forth (Rotherham), and R. Greaves and T. J. Denton (Nottingham). The climb is the most formidable in Wales, as many CELT readers are, doubtless, aware. A correspondent recently met the oldest tenant on Viscount Tredegar's estate. His name is George Thomas, and he speaks Welsh fluently. He is three years older than the Viscount of whom he speaks in warm praise. Cardiff City Corporation Committee have approved of the specification of the casket which is to be presented to Viscount Tredegar on the occasion of the conferring of the Freedom of Cardiff upon him. Vis- count Tredegar is immensely popular in South Wales. The Cardiff Blue Ribbon Choir, which won the Cory Challenge Shield for the best mixed choir of from 60 to 100 voices at the recent National Temperance Fete at the Crystal Palace, is one of the best choirs in Wales. It has been in existence for many years, and has won a good many prizes. Skating is becoming a very popular past- time in South Wales. Quite a number of new skating rinks have been opened in various towns in Glamorganshire and Mon- mouthshire within the last few months.
