EMBANKMENT STRUGGLE.I
EMBANKMENT STRUGGLE. A violent struggle with a Cold-urea Guardsman on the Embankment was de- scund by a constable at the Mansion House on Saturday, when Arthur Atwood t:>t) a private stationed at the Tower, was c-hargcd with wandering while apparently of uii.-oniid iititid. Police-constable Jenner stated that at a quarter past one o'clock in the morniug, as he was patrolling the Embankment, tie met At wood carrying an open razor in his hand. i a Word the soldier made a spring at •him, seized him round the waist, pinned him .¡ 11,,1 the parapet, and then attempted to dra w the razor across his throat. I struggled desperately witk the man. ami with difficulty -got the razor away from him. lie then lilted me bodily on to the parapet* j .with the intention,. I believe, of throwing me. j into the river. At that moment several men came to my assistance. It was a very near shave for my life." Six men were required to get prisoner to the police-station. Tie was removed to Horn- erton Iniirmary. The chief ftlerk stated as the doctor did not certify the man insane the alderman could only dismiss the case, as there; was no other charge. The alderman advised prisoner to sign the pledge and he was taken away under military escort.

It is estimated that the visit of the Queen's Own Kifes, Canada's crack regi- ment., to this country, will cost its Colonel, Sir Kerry Peliatt. at, least £ 30,000. for he has insisted on paying all the expenses of the visit, instead of applying for a Govern- ment gr;.ibt. It ifr the first time a complete regiment i rom any Colony has visited tt, Motherland. 'Hie "Gaiiant Q.O.B. as it is the Dominion, have I recen^lv celebraled their Jubilee in Toronto. I They HAVE S-.II interesting history, beginning on April 2t>, 1SW». when they were enrolled j as the "Second Battalion Volunteer Militia [ Rifles of Canada." They took an active n:nt in rel,dli\ t h, Fenians, and lost m j one fight seven killed and twenty-three j seriously wounded. They were called out! again when the Kid rebellion broke out in 18e5, and they sent several detachments to j the South African war. It was Bugler Williams, of the who sounded the charge on Ig,ager at Paardeberg. The regiment kas come over" for a, month's at Aldershot with the Regulars, and from September 13 to It) they will have, four davs' holiday in London, and will prob- ably be inspected by the King at Bucking- ha ni Palace. A great crowd of sightseers of a morbid tUrJI, of mind gathered at Euston to witness the arrival of a man and woman who have taken up a great deal of in the news- papers during the last mofath or two. These were Dr." Crippen and Miss Le Neve, whose dfdincation in mid-ocean and arrest 4n i Canada bv means of wireless telegraphy j make one of the most seusa tional chapters in the history of crime. The sightseers did not see much of a sight after all, for the detectives hurried their charges iuto taxi- e-abs and the pari y drove rapidly away amid a volley of groans and hisses. Another crowd (,J- moved by morbid and UIl- healthy curiosity, waited nearly all day in Bow-stree1 to see the unhappy pair drive up to the police-station, and as soon as they were recognised there was another discredit- able outburst of booing arid yelling. The two prisoners were lodged for the night in room* at the station, under the constant sur- I veillance of police officers I It appears that the people who protested if I s tlitt- exhibition of pictures of the John^on-defTries prize fight on the ground that 11tev pandered to the worst instincts of human nature were gravely mistaken. The film. and photographs are intended to teach a salutary moral lesson, and the people who I -•arranged for the photographs to be taken, so far from desiring merely to make money out of them, were aci uated by the very highest motives. So, at least, one gathers from a circular sent out by a cinematograph -com- pany which ofly-ii ihe tight slides for next to not hing. Thes- f.ay* the circular, "are the genuine and for any exhibitor wishful to lecture to his audiences on the brutality of prize fights no better illustra- tions could be obtained." One can imagine the xplendid woral lesson which could be dram from this- a quotation from the circu- lar Thirteenth round: J. Johnson lnwek. Jeffries almost through the ropes. His die- tress is horrible, while the blood can plainly Ire ween in the photograph." No doubt ■orgy II is era of P.S.A.'s could obtain specially favourable terms. About live hundred delegates, representing a million II nd three-quarters of organised worker*, will attend the Trades Union Con- gress Mr Sheflield which opens on Monday week. This year's Congress, in view of the position created by the Osborne Judgment, will be one of the most important in the hi«- tory of trades unionism. The Congress is extremely forturiwt* in having as its ud, an important peca^imt. Mr. C. W. %.I.V., who is acting- dur- ing the regrettable illness of Mr. Steadman. Witeit the need arises for the election of a new secretary. Congress is hardly likely to look further than Bower man, for the member* know that if they xe arched throughout the land th"y would hardly find another mtui capable of doing them such good jiervioe. He is one of the ablest oo the La bout' member*, ha* been Chairman of the Printing ami Kindred Trades Federation since its formation,' and was Secretary of the London Society of Compositors for fourteen y-ars. T" liMIt he was Chairman at the S-!D»ii«-a ('ortyr-m, and has held many otkor int|ottani positions in the Trade Union world. He has that "highly necessary quali- fication for a Secretary of Congress, a tre- mendous capacity for work. Many of these exhibits av«"- of priceless historical value, while their artistic beauties are incomparable. Two exyuisite specimens are lent by Qneécm Mary, one by the Queen Mother, and one by Prhi- cess Christian. The coronation fan, of the finest Irish lace, and its ivory slicks with diamond rivets, presented by the Worshipful Company of Fan-makers to Queen Alex- andra, has pride of j -.nee. SUICIDE'S FAREWELL. An inquiry at Castletown, Isle of Man, dis- elo«ted the Had ei'-ctunstances of the drown- ing of John Christiansen, a grocer, of Lis- card, Cheshire.
