'p." CLEAN HAIR. "You have removed a cause of mueh trouble to me. Since my children have been going to school, I have suffered untold misery on account of their heads. Do what I may, I could not keep them clean. I have cried myself to sleep at nights with the annoyance, but now I use HAGON'S CLEASSIK once a weak—after their bath, and dip the brush in it when I dress their hair daily. There has been no more trouble, and their hair is glossy and strong." My little girl has very fair hair, and was much troubled with nits, &c., but since using HAGON'S CLEANSER I have never seen any sign of live stock, and her hair is lovely, GOLDEN HAIR. "I have used HAGON'S CLEANSEK con- stantly for my girls, and they now have beautiful golden hair in each great abun- dance that strangers stop in the street to WIRE them." SCRAGGY HAIR. I have three children-two girls and a boy. The boy has strong, healthy hair always, but the two girls' hair used to come out coombsfuH at a time, and what they kept was scraggy and weak. I have used HAGON's CLEANSER for six months now, and their hair is much longer, strouger, and brighter. I could hardly have hoped for such success." MOTHERS. have written the above in their letters to me. One says she would rather pay a v sovereign a bottle than be compelled to do without HAGON'S CLEANSER now. The cost is Sixpence per bottle, by post tor 9d, or two bottles by post for Is 4d from the maker. Address MR HAGON, CHEMIST, CAKDIFP— but moat Chemists sell HAGON'S CLEANSER.' A STURDY REFORMER. --
A STURDY REFORMER. THOUGH his day in the forefront was done, the progressive cause has reason to regret keenly the demise of sturdy Joseph Cowen, who wrought much for Liberalism in the true and tender North." He was a vigorous and powerful personalty, and he was a politician of that sterling sort which refuses to bend or to bow. Joseph Cowen was always in deadly earnest, and when he made up his mind as to the view to be taken with regard to any subject you might as well try to turn the Tyne from its course as en- deavour to move him. As a journalist and a leader of men, he was an immense force in Newcastle and its neighbourhood for many years and his influence was always exerted for good. His very strenuousness of purpose made him unpopular with some who did not see eye to eye with him, but those who knew the man best, whether as opposing publicists or as fellow-labourers on behalf of the masses, had for his lofty character a very high measure of esteem. His indepen- dence of spirit was conspicuous at all points, and he was the despair of official Opportu- nists and caucus-mongers, yet everyone was compelled to admit the honesty of Joseph Cowen and to allow that even his failings leaned to Virtue's side." MR CHAMBIRLAIN very naturally does not at all like reminding of the Jameson Raid, and he always acrimoniously resents any questioning thereanent in the Commons. Now, the position of Liberalism in the matter is that we should like to see the Colonial Office cleared of the suspicion of complicity in impropriety of conduct. Sir William Harcourt, with Mr D. A. Thomas and Mr Sam Evans, showed this on Tues- day, and Mr Chamberlain would do well to take the hint given and make it clear-if olear it can be made-that no justifiable slur rests upon the character of British Ministers as regard" the Hawksley letters and telegrams. If Mr Rhodes's friends are only seeking to make the Colonial Office scapegoats for sins of commission on their part, Mr Chamberlain owes it to the nation to set the blame where blame belongs. There need be no temper or even simulated rage. Let us have the rights of the thing. Those who have acted squarely need not fear the light of the most searching investigation.
CARDIFF MURDER MYSTERY. --
CARDIFF MURDER MYSTERY. A GRIM AND STIRRING DEED. ONE OF THE ACCUSED KNOWN AT BARRY. Cardiff has been shocked with a murder mystery of a most shocking character. An old man named Henry Blackford has been done to death, and his body discovered in a garden near his house buried six inches beneath the surface. A youth named Thomas Henry Sweetman was arrested, and the deed is said to have been done by him while suffering from homicidal monomania. Sweetman is not unknown at Barry, where he was placed in the dock on remand from Penarth Police-court on July 22nd, 1896, and sent for trial to the quarter sessions on a charge of stealing a bicycle from opposite a house in Windsor-rowd, Penarth, and leaving the machine at Dinas Powis. At the sessions Sweetman was found Not guilty and discharged.

A WENVOE F ARMEICS SAD ,"'DEATH.…
A WENVOE F ARMEICS SAD DEATH. ,• •) FELL OVER A HEDGE. SYMPATHY OF VILLAGERS AND JURYMEN. t The peaceful village of Wenvoe has been disturbed by a sad event. On Wednesday in last week a young farmer named Charles Howell (29). of Bryn Lodge-brother of Mr Howell, corn merchant, Barry Dock, and son of Mr Henry Howell, Yockla House—met with his death in a distressing and sudden manner. It appears that in the afternoon, about four o'clock, he crossed over some fields to White Hall Farm, where his father- in-law lived, for the purpose of borrowing a jack with which to cut some firewood. In about twenty minutes, when returning, his father-in-law, the only eye-witness of the occurrence, saw Howell go through the snow towards a hedge that lay in his home- ward direction. He threw down the jack and made a spring to gain the top of the hedgerow. He gained but a slight foothold, and, falling on the other side by over- balancing himself, his head must have come into sharp contact with the ground, about two feet below. Not seeing him rise (as he had expected), Mr Jenkins, the father-in- law, ordered his son to immediately run to his assistance. Arthur Jenkins seemed to have got there first, and called Charlie." Failing to get an answer he shouted for his father and other brother, who got Howells out of his position, when he was discovered to be dead. Dr Kent was summoned, and that gentleman's opinion was that deceased had met his death by breaking his neck. Deceased must have received such injuries as to cause the compression of the spinal & & cord. 'l.4.J Ib INQUEST AND VERDICT. The inquest was held at the Wenvoe Arms public-house on Friday afternoon, before Mr 1.1. Reece (deputy-coroner) and; a respectable jury, of which the Rev G. H. Jenner was appointed foreman. Miss Ger- trude Jenner, of Typica, was present, and at the outset stated that she attended to express her sympathy with the young widow and four young children, the young- est not ten days old, five generations of whose family had resided upon the Wenvoe Castle Estate. She had attended at great inconvenience, having been laid up by what she claimed to be a "preventible accident. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental death," and after expressing their sympathy with the bereaved family and relatives handed over their fees to the widow.
Police Changes at Barry Dock.
Police Changes at Barry Dock. THE NEW INSPECTOR. The change of local police, ordered by Chief- constable Lindsay a few weeks ago, has taken place this week, Inspector John Williams removing to Pentre on Tuesday, and Inspector Morris taking up hia residence the same day on his removal from Llandaff. Inspector Morria is not unknown to Barry people. For many years after joining the Glamorgan constabulary, he was located in the Merthyr Division, and subsequently removed to Cogan upon being promoted to the rank of sergeant. After remaining in the neighbouring town for several years, he wae promoted in charge of the Llandaff Station, an important eentre of popula. tion. During his career he has frequently come into promiuence, and by all superior officers he was regarded as a very straightforward officer. Inspector Morris's promotion was equally popular by all the men in the force. Barry Dock ia one of the chief stations in the County of Glamorgan and, in common with all the townspeople, we wish Inspector Morris a long and happy period of reaidenee ia the town.
An Evening with Wagner. --
An Evening with Wagner. On Tuesday evening Mr W. Ronnfeldt spoke at the weekly meeting of the Barry Literary Society •». fcho subject of Wagner and his Music. Mr Ronnfeldt spoke in an enthusiaatic manner of Wagner s art and productions, and his iuflueace on the opelatic stage. He described Wagner as a man who combined the greatest creative talent with the greatest power of expression. As Shak- spore was far superior to any modern dramatic poet, so Wagner was the greatest operatic poet of modern times. He laboured for the perfect- ing of the operatic stage and its accessories, as he spent his life, which was embittered with all the adversities almost at all times the heritage of men of genius, in the produetion of the highest operatio music. He encountered the hostility of the musical Philistines and blockneads of his day, and it was not until quite recently that his genius had become appreciated, Mr Ronnfeldt also described at length the remarkable *be*tre at Bayreuth, built specially for the opera by Wag«,er> and which waa considered the most perfect theatre for the purnoso 10 Europe, At intervals the lecturer gave .^01- men, of his subject s music on the piano, going from one eud of the scale to the ether, from what i commonly known a, the Waonprilll1 t.n ik- beautifuliy soft and melodious. The evening was ious. an intensely u.te.estint; one, and the Chairman- Dr Gillou Irving-_EXpREISE(J T((E AUDJEBCE», feelings wh«u he thanked Mr Rd«nfrl<it for the unboui d»d pleasure he had afforded them.
