ST. DAVID'S DAY. BANQUET THIS EVENING. ALDERMAN WALTER MORGAN EXPECTED. Preparations for this evening's patriotic gathering to celebrate the anniversary of the Welsh Patron Saint at Barry, are completed, and a very successful gathering is anticipated. In addition to Mr W. Llewelyn Williams, M.A., B.L., Alderman Walter Morgan, the Liberal candidate for South Glamorgan, is ex- pected to be present, and will respond to the toast of "The British Empire." Mr J. E. Rees, headmaster of Hannah-street Schools, will preside.

EDUCATION IN BARRY SCHOOL EXTENSIONS. At a meeting of the Technical Instruction Com- mittee of the Glamorgan Couaty Council on Tuesday in Cardiff, Alderman Jones Griffiths presiding, the report of the sub-committee appointed to consider the question of purchasing additional land for Barry School was submitted by Mr H. S. Davies. The committee had already sanctioned the purchase of two acres of land ao £ 1,000. The local governors had now the offer of another aero, which they considered requisite, at 9250, and the sub-committee recommenced that this be purchased. This was agreed to. The local governors estimated the cist of fencing and laying out thre- acres at 1:978. The consulting architect (Mr S. Griffiths) ci nsidtred row thai, the wor^ could be done at £ 550. It was accordingly resolved that an expenditure of this amount for that pur- pose be sanctioned.

MAY.DAY SHOW. Tha first meeting of the May Show Committee this year was held at the Windsor Hotel, Barry Dock, under the presidency of Mr W. Thomas, the Hayes, when the principal business done was to decide to hold the show, and to elect the chief officers as follows :-President, Mr W. Thomas; vice-preswent, Dr ODonnell; secre- tary, Mr R. W. Hall, and treasurer, Mr J. Price. The next meeting of the committee will be held at the Castle Hotel, Barry Dock, on Wednesday next, and the general public is in- vited to be present.

BARRY RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS. Thw tatal returns from passenger, goods, and mineral traffic (including receipts of the Yale .f Glamorgan Railway) for the week ending February 24tb, 1900, amounted to £ 10,337, as compared with S78,792 in the cor- responding week last year.

BIG TEMPERANCE MISSION SUCCESSFUL MEETINGS AT THE ENGLlSii BAPTIST CHAPEL. The Temperance Societies of the Barry district took very energetic measures for making the temperance mission, which commenced last Saturday evening and finishes this evening (Thursday), a thorough success. Temperance workers were scattered over the district, some delivering handbills, and others corumunicating to the public by word of mouth, mi.d in this way the public were apprised of the visit of a well-known temperance missionary, and were desired to attend at least one of the meetings conducted by him. The meetings were held under the auspices of the Free Church Council Temperance Committee, at the English Baptist Chapel, Holton-road, Barry Dock. THE FIRST MEETING was held on Saturday evening, and was presided over by Councillor Evan Junes. The Chairman was supported by Mrs Williams and Mrs Jones (Barry), and Revs T. Palldy John (pastor), Y\ D. Lee Cann, and Ben Evans and Messrs James Cruise, J. P. Panniers, J. O. Da\ies, M. S. Lewis, J. Meikle, &c.-Previous to the general public meeting, an address to temperance workers was delivered late in the afternoon, and at the evening lecture Mr T. W. Glover spoke long and forcibly on bis experiences in Australia and New Zealand. He detailed the story of a mission he conducted in Australia (Melbourne) 15 years ago. This mission was rather a mammouth organisation, and was endowed greatly by the spirit of enterprise. The Exhibition Hall, the biggest building in the City of Melbourne, was hired, and during the temporary absence of Mr Glover in lasmania for two months, preparations were made for the mission. Six thousand c airs were placed in this building, and besides a fine organ, a choir of 300 voices belonging to members of the city churcht s, with a full orchestra, was trained and led the singing. A powerful and active committee had the arrange- ments in hand, and the success of the mission may be gathered from the fact that no less than 14,000 pledges were taken. This was the way in which Mr Glover introduced himself. The subjeet of his lecture was the Economic Aspect of the Temperance Question." This rather prosaic subject was made most interesting. It was interlarded with jokes and humourous touches which are characteristic of the man. These jokes were very pat and full of life. One example will suffice. A buily working man once boasted- After I have had two glasses of beer I can knock a house down." ¥t' retorted a quiet listener, but I have had no drink for ten years, and I have knocked two houses up." The lecturer compared Australia with the mother country for an economic basis, and showed that although Australia might spend more on drink, the people got lea, for their money, as a threepenny drink in England cost twice as much in Australia. "OUR LADS AND LASSES." Mr G. Rutter presided over Moi day evening's met ting, when Mr Glover spoke <n the su bj. ct of "Out Lads and Lasses." Mr Butter sp« ke of the great sti ides made by temperance woikers in the district during the past few years, and the work that was being done in Parliament for the refor m of the law in relation to the liquor traffic. The Rev J. Davies, Methodist Free Couich, lr ceded the lecturer in a powerful and earnest address on the subjects of (,ur bys and gi>ls, in which the apathy of the parent was s r, nv-ly e( n(iemi,ed. Without anecdotes and stories illusti atiog his argument, Mr Glover may be suid to have very little address. but it is his ay of enforcing his principles on the public mind that makes him such a fine and effective lecturer. He makes his aDec- dotes the principal part of his address and not an aid to the digestion of it. Monday night's audience was dosed with anecdotes and stories, facts and figures, with here and there a little mr ral philosophy, but it seemed to like it. Between the anecdotes Mr Glover let fail some valuable advioe and good counsel. He remaiked on the great advance made in education since the middle of the century, and the greater responsibilities of the boy and girl of the present day, who were to sharp comparatively with their brothers and alters of a bygone generation. He sifted the evidence, and asked, it knowledge had so greatly increased, had they the power to apply it. A NIGHT WITH THE DOCTORS. On Tuesday evening the Rev Aaron Davies, D.D. presided over the fourth meeting of the mission. Ovking to the excitement which the news of Cronju's surrender had created in the town, the attendance was meagre. Mr Gluver gave an admirable address entitled, A night with the doctors," and in it impressed upou his audience an aspect of the effects of drink which is not often dealt with. AN AFTERNOON MEETING. Mrs Wensley, the president of ;the local branch of the British Women's Temperance Association, occupied the chair at a meeting held on Wednesday afternoon, when a loom underneath the chapel was well filled with ladies, young and old. Mr Glover eclipsed himselt in thid address in giving an account of the grand woak which is done by women in Australia and New Zealand, where they have the assistance of the franchise. LEGISLATION AND DRINK. In the evening Mr Glover, supported by Coun- cillor Smith-Jonas (in the chair), Rev Ben Evans, and Mr J. O. Davies, speke at length of the effect of prohibition, in the State of Maine, U.S, with reference to the working of the laws and the Temperance Party in New Zealand. The lecturer had a deal to say about the success of General Neal Dow's work in Maine, and the complete success which had attended the introduction of Prohibi. tion, when only the most degraded would undergo humiliations inconceivable to obtain spirituous liquor. This evening (Thursday) Mr Glover will give a farewell address.
