THE CONFERENCE.
On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week the Pembrokeshire Baptists' Association held its annual meetings at Llangloffan, beautiful weather favouring the proceedings on both days. The meetings opened on Tuesday evening, when sermons were delivered by the Rev R. Griffiths, Bethabara, who took for his text the 8th verse of the 3rd chapter to the Romans; and the Rov Jones, Myrtletwy, who based his remarks on the 9th and 10th verses of the 54th chapter of Isaiah. The service was introduced by the Rev — Roberts, Marloes.—A service was also held at Saron Chapel, Letterston, at which the Revs D. Evans, Blaenconin, and Reed, Caerau, Maesteg, officiated. On Wednesday the proceedings opened at Llangloffan at 9 o'clock by a prayer meeting, which was conducted by Mr B. Rees, of Granant.—At 10 o'clock a preaching service was held at the chapel, which was crowded to its utmost capacity. Sermons were delivered by the Rev J. W. Maurice, Dinas, from the 11th verse of the 2nd chapter of John and the Rev D. Evans, Blaenconin, from the 17th verse of the 9th chaper to the Romans. The discourses at these services were both able and effective. THE CONFERENCE. At 1.30 the Rev J. Phillips, Trevasser, the Association president for the year, presided at the conference held at the chapel, and dis- charged the duties of his office with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of all present. He read a very able paper on the Religion of Jesus Christ," which was recommended as the Association letter to the churches in the county. A vote of condolence was passed with the Rev O. D. Campbell, Haverfordwest, and his family in their recent bereavement; and also with the relatives of the late Mr D. J. Griffiths, a young student from Narberth. The Rev J. W. Maurice, Dinas, brought forwird his notice of motion in regard to the adoption of some definite and regular plan for raising ministers, and after a prolonged dis- cussion a committee of three was selected to draw up a scheme to be presented at next year's association conference. The Rev D. J. Evans, Newport, brought forward a proposition, which was carried, that in future an agreement should be entered into between the Baptist college authorities and all students to the effect that in the event of their seceding from the Baptists (after leaving college) they should refund to the college an amount equal to the cost incurred in their training. Mr George Morris, Fishguard, wrote ten- dering his resignation (in consequence of ill-health) as secretary to the Pembrokeshire Baptists' Sunday School Union. Several ministers spoke highly of the service rendered by Mr Morris, and expressed regret at his indisposition.-On the proposition of the Rev W. Rees, Harmony, seconded by the Rev Aaron Morgan, Blaenffos, Mr J. W. Llew- helin, Brestgarn, was selected to fill the vacancy. The Rev Jacob John, Beulah, by virtue of his office as vice-president, was elected presi- dent for the coming year, and the Rev D. Lewis, Honey borough, vice-president. It was decided to hold next year's cym- anfa at Bethel, Mynachlogddu; and the first quarterly meeting at Neyland the second at Letterston, and the third at Blaenffos. The consideration of reports sent in by the various committees had to be adjourned, and in referring to this matter the treasurer, Mr Rowlands, remarked that he felt that the time allotted to the conference was too little, considering the large amount of business which had to be transacted.—Others also spoke on this subject, and it was decided to recom- mend the question to the notice of the church receiving the next association. The following resolutiors were passed un- animously Fod y cyfarfod hwn o Gymanfa Bedyddwyr Sir Benfro., yr hen a rifa 25,000, rhwng aelodau a gwrandawwyr, yn datgan ei elyniaeth fwyaf anghymodlawn i Ddeddf Addysg 1902, ac yn honi na bydd unrhyw derfyniad yn foddhaol a fetha sefydlu cyfundrefn addysg y wlad ar seiliau cenedlaethol, trwy ei rhyddhau oddi- wrth bob dylanwad ac ymyraeth sectol, gosod pob ysgol a gynelir gan drethu y wlad o dan reolaeth uniongyrchol ac effeithiol y treth- dalwyr, a dileu pob prawf ac amodau crefyddol yn hyfforddiant ac apwyntiad athrawon. Dat- ganwn hefyd ein gofid a'n digllonedd yn herwydd fod y LIywodraeth wedi dwyn i fewn i'r Senedd fesur treisiol er gorfodi y boblo- gaeth Gymreig i dalu at gynal ysgolion sect- yddol, yn hytrach na diddymu deddf y mae yr holl dywysogaeth wedi gwrthdystio mor unol a phenderfynol yn ei herbyn." That this assembly of the Pembrokeshire Baptists' Association, representing upwards of 25,000 members and adherents, protests against the action of the Government in granting permission to import Chinese labour under conditions which involve, both morally and economically, the chief evils of slavery, and call upon them to speedily remove this flagrant injustice done to the new South African Colony and to efface the shameful stain it has brought upon the reputation of the empire." That this assembly of the Pembrokeshire Baptists' Association strongly condemns the Licensing Bill now before Parliament on the following grounds: (1) Because it interferes most seriously with the administrative powers exercised for centuries by the licensing jus- tices; (2) because it creates a permanent vested interest in annual licenses; (3) because it renders impossible any adequate reduction in the number of licensed houses; (4) because it weakens the public control over the liquor traffic which is necessary in the interests of moral and social well-being. That this as- sembly, therefore, appeals to its members and adherents to resist by all means in their power the above proposals." Representatives were also appointed on the various colleges and committees; and the secretary (Rev W. Griffith, Bethel), and the treasurer (Mr James Rowlands, Haverford- west) were re-elected.—Messrs George Davies, Garn, Dinas, and H. Morris, Clynderwen, were re-elected auditors. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Pastor and church at Llangloffan for their excellent arrangements for the reception of the Association this year. PREACHING. While the conference was being held in the chapel an open-air service was conducted in a field (kindly lent by Mr Lewis), which is splendidly situated on a high but sloping elevation, and proved admirable for the aus- picious event. From it could be viewed the surrounding country for many miles, the scenery being magnificent; indeed, the gather- ing was such as invited everyone to join in the service and bow in adoration before the benign Creator. The afternoon preacher was the Rev Dan Davies (Hermon, Fishguard), who delivered an eloquent sermon, taking for his subject the 28th verse of the second chapter of Joel.—The service was introduced by the Rev B. Thomas, Letterston.—The attendance at this service went a long way to prove that oreaching is still the popular attraction for the mass of the people attending these 44 cym- anfaoedd." -The evening service (which was also held in the open-air) was introduced very effectively by the Rev Caerau, Maesteg (a native of Mathry). The preachers were the Rev — Roberts, .Marloes, taking his text from the 20th verse of the 2nd chapter ot Galatians; and the Rev S. Glannedd Bowen, Penuel, from the 12th and 13th verses of the 2nd chapter to the Philipians, both preaching very able sermons.—The various services were conducted by the Rev Ifan Davies, who, at the close of the last meeting, returned his grateful thanks to all those who had given their assistance to bring the Association maetings to such a successful issue.—Ample provisions were made for everybody, and in this respect, as well as in the general arrange- ments, a mead of praise is due to the church at Llangloffan and its venerable Pastor.—Mr T. Griffiths, Mathry, conducted the singing, while Miss Myfanwy Davies discharged the duties of accompanist.
Y PARCH. J. PHILLIPS, TREFASSER,…
Y PARCH. J. PHILLIPS, TREFASSER, CADEIRYDD CYMANFA BEDYDDWYR SIR BENFRO, 1903-1904. Pleser calon i mi yw rhoddi ger bron y darllen- wyr fraslun o hanes bywyd y gwr yr ewyllysiodd enwad y Bedyddwyr yn y sir osod arno ei an- rhydedd uwchaf, drwy ei ethol yn gadeirydd eu symanfa. Yn wreiddiol, un o feibion Sir Benfro yw Mr Phillips, ac fel llawer o'i flaen y mae iddo fin- rhydedd yn ei wlad ei hun. Ganwyd ef yn ardal brydferth Bethabara, yn mhlwyf yr Eglwyswen, tua dwy filltir o Eglwyswrw. William ac Emma Phillips oeddynt enwau ei rieni, yr un Phillipiaid a'r diweddar Barch David Phillips, gweinidog cyntaf Blaenywaun. Efe yw yr hynaf o bedwar o blant (bechgyn i gyd). Aelodau yn Bethabara oedd ei rieni, ac yr oeddynt yn nodedig o ffyddlon gyda holl foddion gras drwy hyn cafodd ef ei arfer er yn blentyn i fynychu holl gyfarfodydd yr eglwys, a derbyniodd argraphiadau da eryn foreu. Yr oedd ei dad yn wr goleuedig yn y Beibl, a gwnaeth ei oreu i hyfforddi ei blant yn y Gwir- ionedd. Yr oedd ei fam yn ddynes nodedig o grefyddol, ei dylanwad ar ei theulu yn fawr, ei hymdrech i blanu yn meddyliau ei phlant wirion- eddau yr efengyl yn egniol, a chafodd fyw i'w gweled oil yn aelodau dichlynaidd o Eglwys Iesu Grist. Un o'r bendithion goren all plant gael yw mam ddnwiol ac ymdrechol i'w dysgu yn egwy- ddorioo teyrnas npfoedd. Y mae hi wedi huno er's blvnvddoedd bellach. ond wedi marw. yn r liefaru-ti. Ymunodd Mr Phillips a chrefydd yn ieuanc iawn. Bedyddiwyd ef yn Bethabara gan y diweddar Barch D. Price, Blaenffos a Bethabara, gwr enwog yn ei ddydd, a'i barch hyd y dydd hwn yn blodeuo a pherarogli yn hyfryd drwy yr holl wlad. Yn fuan ar ol hyn cymerodd ei rieni fferm I o'r enw Cwm, yn Nghwmffrwd, gerllaw Caerfyr- ddin, a symudwyd yno i fyw, ac ymaelododd y rhieni a'r mab yn y Tabernacl, Caerfyrddin, o dan weinidogaetli alluog a phoblogaidd y Parch H. W. Jones. Wedi treulio peth amser gyda'i rieni gartref ar y fferm, aeth i ysgol yn y dref, ac oddi yno aeth yn egwyddorwas i siop yr Em- porium. Symudodd o Gaerfyrddin i Hirwain yn siopwr ieuanc hoew yn awr, ac ymaelododd yn Ramoth, Hirwain. Derbyniodd lawer a fudd yno, yn enwedig iriewn cysylltiad a chyfarfodydd y bobl ieuainc perthynol i'r eglwys. Barnodd mai doeth a buddiol fuasai un symudiad arall, ac aeth i siop a Post Office yn Brynmawr, ac ymael- ododd yn Seion. Bu yn hynod ymdrechol yma gyda'r achos goreu, yn athraw yn yr Ysgol Sul, ac am y tlwj ddyn a haner olaf o'i arosiad yn y lie yn ysglifenydd yr eglwys. Ymadawodd oddi yno a dychwelodd gartref i Gaerfyrddin. Yn fuan wedi hyn cafodd gymhelliad cryf gan y gweinidog, y Parch H. W. Jones, ac eglwys y Tabernacl, i ddechreu pregethu, a chydsyniodd yntau a'r cais. Ptnderfynodd yn awr wneyd cais am dderbyn- iad i'r Athrofa, ac er mwyn gloewi ei arfau at hyn, aeth am dymhor i Park-y-velvet Academy, Caerfyrddin, gan bregethu gyda derbyniad neill- duol yn eglwysi y cylch ar y Sabbathau. Yn 1870 cafodd dderbyniad i Athrofa Pontypool. Treuliodd dair blynedd yno wrth draed yrHy barch Lywydd Dr Thomas, a'r Parch George Thomas, M.A., a Mr James Sully, M.A., ac ar ol ym- adawiad y ddau olaf, o dan y Parch W. Mortimer Lewis, M.A. Bu yn gyd-fyfyriwr am ran o'r tymhor a'r Parchn. W. Edwards, B.A., D.D., llywydd presenol Athrofa Caerdydd T. Thomas, Bethany, Risca; D. Thomas, B.A.; Dr T. Witton Davies, B.A., Bangor, a'r cenadon enwog, y Parchn. 1)1. Jones a W. R. James, India. Cafodd ei iechyd ei niweidio yn fawr ar daith gasglu at yr athrofa y flwyddyn cyneiymadawiad o'r athrofa trwy gael gwely llaith, ac nid yw byth wedi cael gwaredigaeth Iwyr oddiwrth effeithion y tro anffodus hwnw. Nid efe yw y cyntaf na'r diweddaf i gwrdd ag anffawd y gwely damp. Y mae bai dirfawr ar bobl i fod mor anystyriol a phergylu bywyd ac iechyd unrhyw ddyn wrth roddi iddo wely annhymherus. Y mae rhai, drwy hyn, wedi cwrdd ag angan anam- serol, ac ereill wedi eu hanafu am eu hoes yn eu itchyd Ar ddiwedd ei drydedd flwyddyn yn yr athrofa cafodd alwad i fugeilio yr eglwys yn Tal- garth, a galwad hefyd i Erwood a Ramah, Sir Frycheiniog. Gwrthododd y tiaenaf, a dewisiodd yr olaf. Cafodd ei ordeinio yn Erwood a Ramah yn 1873. Bu yno yn hynod ddedwydd, a detn- yddiol, a llwyddianus am ddwy flynedd. Gan iddo gael gal wad i faes helaethach, sef eglwysi Seisnig Cold Inn a Manorbier, Sir Benfro, pender- fynodd fyned yno. Gweithiodd yn galed eto yn y maes hwn gyda pharch a llwyddiant amlwg. Pregethai dair gwaith bob Sabbath, mynychai holl gyfarfodydd y ddwy eglwys, ac yr oedd ganddo bum milltir o ffordd i'w theithio rhwng y ddau le. Profodd hyn yn ormod i'w nerth yn y diwedd, a gwanydiodd ei iechyd yn fawr. Cyng- horwyd ef gan ei feddyg i gymeryd maes ysgafn- ach. Ar yr adeg hon cafodd alwad unfrydol i ddychwelyd i'r hen faes yn Erwood a Ramah, ond gan iddo gael galwad ar yr un adeg i Painscastle a Moriah, Sir Faesjfed, yno yr aeth. Cafodd yno dair blynedd hynod ddedwydd a llwyddianus. Bedyddiodd amryw yn Painscastle, ond llawer mwy yn Moriah. Pan yn agoehau at ddiwedd y cyfnod hwn, ymunodd mewn glan briodas a Miss Mary Rees, Trefasser Shop, Pencaer, chwaer ieuengaf y bon- eddwr haelionus D. Rees, Ysw., Llandeloy. Gan nad oedd ei iechyd yn gryf a Mrs Phillips am aros yn mlaen lie yr oedd, rhoddodd ef ofal yr eglwjsi uchod i fyny, a daeth i fyw at ei wraig i I)rofas, ser, lie y maent wedi bod oddiar liyny hyd yn awr yn cario yn mlaen fasnach lwyddianus, yn nghyd a dal fferm brydfeith Trefasser. Ar ei ddyfodiad yma ymaelododd yn Harmony, Peucaer, yn yr hon eglwys y mae efe a Mrs Phillips wedi bod yn aelodau ffyddlon a gweithgar am y ddwy llynedd-ar-hugain diweddaf. Teg yw nodi fod Mrs Phillips yn athrawes ffyddlon yn yr Yegol Sul ar ddosbarth o ferched yn ystod yr boll flynyddoedd eithriad yw iddi golJi Ysgol Sul, os na fydd rhwjstr neillduol ar ei ffordd. Bu iddynt un mab bychan anwyl, ond gwelodd yr Arglwydd yn ddoeth ei gymeryd oddiwrthynt yn mis Medi, 1886, pan aad oedd yr un bychan ond 14 mis oed. Y galar am dano fu drwm, ac nid yw yr hiraeth wedi ymadael eto yn llwyr. Y mae galwadau ami ar Mr Phillips i wasan- aethu yn mhwlpudau yr enwad yn y sir hon a siroedd ereill, ac y mae yn gwneuthur hyny gyda chymeradwyaeth uchel yn mhob lie yr a iddo. Fel gweinidog cynorthwyol, gallwn oddiar brofiad personol roddi iddo y gymeradwyaeth uwchaf. Y mae bob amser yn barod ac ewyllysgar i gynorth- wyo gweinidog sefydlog yr eglwys yn mhob peth y gofynir iddo. Elfen, mae'n debyg yw hon, na cheir hi bob amser yn mhob gweinidog cynorth- wyol, ond gallwn ddweyd am Mr Phillips na welsom ball arno erioed. Fel cadeirydd y gym- anfa, llanwodd ei swydd yn anrhydeddus drwy y llwyddyn. Caed ei bresenoldeb yn mhob cwrdd, a llywyddodd yr oil gyda medr, a phwyll, a doethineb nodedig. Caed ganddo anerchiad rhag- orol o'r gadair. Ei bwnc oedd 44 Crefydd Iesu Grist." Triniodd y pwnc yn fanwl, a goleu, a medrus, a phwrpasol. Ni fiinodd neb a meithder, ac er mai anerchiad eymedrol fyr oedd ganddo, yr oedd yn llawn o fater gwir werthfawr a phwysig. Credwn y dylai pob aelod o'r eglwysi sicrhau copi o'r anerchiad rhagorol hwn, a'i astudio yn ofalus a gweddigar. Bydd darllen llythyr fel hyn yn sicr o'n cadarnhau yn y gwirioneddau a gredir yn ddiamheu yn ein plith. Dymunwn oes hir iddo ef a Mrs Phillips i wasanaethu, eu hen wad, eu hoes, eu crefydd, a'u Duw. W. HEES.
A Cause for Goodwick.
A Cause for Goodwick. On Wednesday last at the South Pembroke- shire and Cardigan Congregational Union a committee was formed, consisting of the Rev J G James, of Rhosycaerau, Rev G J Morris, of Newport (Pem.), Rev W Morlais Davies (Fishguard), Rev Hugh Griffiths (Evangelist to the English Congregational Union), and the Rev W A Edwards, of Pembroke Dock, to take steps to start a cause at Goodwick, where there are nineteen Congregational families at present with no place of «jvorship of their own denomination. An interesting report as to the condition of the Sunday Schools of the county was submitted by the Rev Jenkyn James. He stated there was a slight decrease in the number of scholars, which he attributed to the increasing interest taken in amusements, especially Saturday football, to the scarcity of teachers, and most of all, the gradual depopulation of the rural districts. There was an interesting discussion as to the course to be adopted to bring about an increased attendance. A petition against the Licensing Bill was unanimously adopted.
