< New Life-Boat for Cardigan The life-boat stationed many years since at Cardigan by the Royal National Life-Boat Insti- tution has just been .replaced by a new boat, which htfS been built for the Institution by the Thames Ironworks Company. The boat is of the self-righting type, 35 ft. long, and 8f t. 6 in. wide, rowing 1U oars double-banked, and is fitted with two water.ballast tanks and two drop-keels. She is named the Elizabeth Austin, her cost hav- ing been met from a portion of the generous legacy bequeathed to the Institution by the late Miss Sarah Austin, of Tottenham, to provide two life-boats. It should be added that the Institu- tion is much indepted to the local committee aud Captain T H Williams, J.P., the honorary secretary, for their valuable co-operation in the management of the Cardigan Life-Boat Station. The Royal National Life-Boat Institution has now 28,1 boats under its management, 35 of which are sta-tioned on the coast of Wales, and not a winter passes without their rendering service in saving life from shipwreck. A large sum is expended annually on maintaining these boats in a state of thorough efficiency. Contributions in aid of the Institution will be gladly received by all the bankeis in the United Kingdom, by the several local honorary secretaries, and by Charles Dibdin, Esq., the secretaiy of the Institution, 20 Charing Cross Road, London.

Lawn Tennis Match at Haverfordwest An interesting lawn-tennis match took place on Friday last, the 28th, on the grounds of the County Lawn-Tennis Club at Haverfordwest. The teams were captained by Mrs Edwardes, of Sealyliam, and Miss Roch, of Plas-y-Bridell. There was a very fine exhibition of lawn-tennis throughout the day, and the match was very even. It resulted in a win ;for Miss Roch's team by 5 Matches to 4 11 Setts to 9 90 Games to 92. Thetefore it will be seen that Mrs Edwaides' team were better in point of games. The hostesses on the occasion were Mrs Edwardes, Miss Higgon, and Miss Gladys Samson, who dispensed hospital- ity to a large and distinguished company, repre- senting the leading houses in the north and south of the county. Miss Mirehouse, in spite of hav- ing recently put our her shouidei, played the first round, after which her place was taken by Miss Baird. The result was as follows, and we hear that a return match, to take place at the 1 ivy- sido, is being contemplated. Mrs Edwardes and Mr W Eaton-Evans beat Miss Roch, and Mr C Eaton-Evans 6-1, 6-0. Beat Miss Gower and Mr Grace 7-5, 6 3, and were beaten by Miss Begbie and Mr Roch 2-6, 7-5, 0-6. Miss Higgon and Mr Morley beat Miss Roch and Mr C Eaton- Evans 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Were beaten by Miss wer and Mr Grace 4-6. 2-6. and were beaten by Miss Begbie and Mr Roch 2-6, 3-6. Miss Baird and MrVlIiggon beat Miss Roch and Mr C Eaton- Evans 6-2, 6-1. Were beaten bv Miss Begbie and Mr Roch 4-6, 5-8. And Mr V Higgon and Miss Mirehouse were beaten by Miss Gower and Mi- Grace 46, 3-6.

EGLWYSWRW. School Report.—The following is a copy of the summary of 11.M. Inspector's report on the Meline and Whitechurch Council School, Ealwyswrwi for the year ending May 31st 1905 The work of the school is carried on in the usual painstnking and careful way by the Headmaster and his assistant. The highest grant as usual was earned." School Report.-The report of His Majesty's Inspectors on the Eylwswrw School for the past year has just come to hand, and reflects great credit on the headmaster and his staff. It runs as follows :—" This school coutinues to be exceedingly well taught. The rooms are very much over-crowded. The girls' porch is too email, and sjrue lavatory arrangements are wanted." DALE. Prize Fight.—There was a boxing match, otherwise a prize fight, a few days ago in a field behind Merryborough Farm, Dale, between a canteen keeper at one of the Milford IIaven forts, and a bricklayer, now employed at St. Annes Head. The match v<As the occasion of considerable local excite- ment, and brought together some hundreds 0 of spectators, who were charged a fixed sum for admission. The contestants were in a roped in enclosure, and all the rules of the prize-ring were observed. e bricklayer was knocked out in the sixth round.

New Scheme for Elementary Teachers. KING'S SCHOLARSHIP TO BE ABAN- DONED. Something of importance concerning can- didates for the teaching profession has just been issued by the Board of Education in the shape of regulations and syllabus for preliminary examination for the certificate which in 1907 will take the place ef the King's scholarship examination. A regards the altered name, the Board considered the old title misleading, as the examination was no longer the only avenue through which the teacher could obtain admission to the train- ing college, aid given by the Exchequer to- wards training of teachers for public elemen- tary schools being rather a grant for main- tenance of colleges than individual scholar- ships. The change also provides recognition of the fact that the examination is now more important as a preliminary stage towards the certificate examination for untrained teachers than as an entrance examination for train- ing colleges. These successful candidates will have to pass tests in competition and arithmetic, to show a reasonable degree of efficiency in English history and geography, and to offer one other subject—either elementary science or mathematics or foreign laoguage. Marks of distinction will be awarded,and fl/r this purpose candidates may take further optional subjects which will count towards success in the examination as a whole. The standard required to pass will be roughly that required by examination, and that necessary to obtain distinction equivalent to having the certificate of the London University, English and history being rather higher. The university exten- sion certificate will no longer be accepted in lieu of the corresponding subject in the Board's own examination, and the Board will not in future allow students. to be prepared for university degree or examination leading thereto unless he has passed the preliminary examination for the certificate, with distinc- tion in compulsory subjecte, aid elementary science and mathematics and two languages, or unless he has passed some other examina- tion accepted by the Board as equivalent.

MATHRY. The Bishop of Swansea held a confirmation in Matbry Church. The Rev D Griffiths, vicar, and Rev J Bowen, St. Lawrence, as- sisted in the service. There were four candi. dates from St Lawrence and seven from Mathry. The Bishop delivered a very solemn and instructive address, which was highly appreciated by the congregation' Mrs Perkins ably presided at the organ, and the singing was very good. Tea was provided in the schoolroom.

CRICKET. FISHGUARD JUNIORS v. GOODWICK. The return match between these two teams was played on the Cefnydre ground on Tuesday in last week. The Goodwick side was strengthened by the presence of W T John, who, although a teacher in the Council School, decided to play with Good- wick. The Fishguard boys, especially Henry Davies, fielded very well, and won by 32 runs. No Light.—At Roose Petty Sessions on Saturday Wm Rowlands, ot Dale Point Farm, was summoned for driving without a light. P.C. Lewis. stationed at Dale, said on the 17th ult. he saw the defendant driv- ing a horse and cart in Dale village. He had no light and when he asked defendant to explain its absense be said he had lost his lamp on the road coming from Little-Marloes. Defendant, who did not appear, wa3 fined Is and 6s 6d coat.
