ENTRE NOUS.
ENTRE NOUS. THE South African Bubble has been pricked, and Mr. WALTER F. ROCll, M.P., has de- clared his intention of remaining, like a good young man, in that position to which the suffrages of his fellow county-men have called him. Had he chosen, he might have secured an honourable and lucrative post provided a safe seat for one of the evicted Ministerialists, added to the gaiety of nations by paving the way for a return visit of the Suffrattes to Wales' Premier County, and I conferred upon the Echo a status in the pro- phetic world second only to that of the vener- able astrologer MOORE Yet all these seduc- tions he has thrust ruthlessly aside, ratner than exercise the prerogative of the opposite sex of changing his mind 1 But, perhaps, after all, it is unfail to pour forth the vials of our righteous wrath upon the devoted head of the County Member, for he has assured us that he never received the offer of any office- which was very unkind on the part of HEBBERT As the public is wont to remark, It is curious how these things get into the newspapers; isn't it ? 0 PHE causes of alleged obstruction partially leard at last week's Fishguard Petty Sessions ire still sub judice, and we are consequently iebarred from commenting thereupon, No ;uch restriction applies, however, to the ex- olanatory remarks which fell from the lips of the Chief Constable in placing the charges before the Bench. He stated that he was acting on a complaint received from the Haverfordwest Rural District Council. So far as the two Goodwick prosecutions are concerned we see no reason to quarrel with this, explanation, but we fail utterly to under- stand by what right the Rural Authority pre- sumes to interfere with the internal affairs of the urban area. The gravity of the matter is accentuated when one ccmes to consider that in the event of convictions being ecured the Urban Council will find itself placed in possession of a considerable length of pavements, the maintenance and repair of which it has hitnerto successfully evaded. Fishguardians who posess votes outside the urban area will do well to bear this in mind when called upon to exercise the franchise next month, and to secure from candidates for Rural honours an assurance that the Haverfordwest authority will henceforth, if they have any voice in the matter, attend carefully and exclusively to its own business. IN penning the foregoing we are reminded that the Chief Constable referred to the Rural Authority as the" District Council," which is the term commonly but erroneously in use in this locality. Such a designation was permissible in the days when Fishguard boasted no higher dignity than parochial ad- ministration, but today it is calculated to give rise to innumerable misunderstandings by reason of the fact that Fishguard also is governed by a District Council. Obviously District" is useless as a differential term, the ø -1 1 1 J. 1- words Rural" and Urban oeing tne oueb most applicable to the purpose. A similar confusion prevails in local educational mat- ters the elementary schools being deeenbed as "Council" and the Intermediate as County," whereas both designations might accurately be applied, either jointly gr individually, to either class of school. A? to the proper de- signation of the corporation which owns the Market Hall, we confess to a hopeless con- fusion of impressions having heard and seen it framed in at least half a dozen different fashions. _—
Fishguard Motor Lifeboat.
Fishguard Motor Lifeboat. NEW SITE FOR HOUSE APPROVED. meeting of the Local Committee of the Fishguard Branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was held at the new Boat-house, Fishguard Harbour on Saturday afternoon, to consider a communication and plan received by the Institution from the Great Western Railway Company as to pro- viding a suitable site for the new boat-house 1 1 and slipway. Mr J C Bowen presided and there were present Capts Titus Evans, Richard Sharp, and F Fhomas; also Mr T H Evans, and the hon. secretary, Mr W J Vaughan. It was proposed by Mr T H Evans, second- ed by Capt T Evans, and agreed, that the annual meeting of subscribers be held at trie Glendower Hall,. Goodwick, on Friday next, Izaffpf The Hon Secretary read a copy or a ieue received from the Great Western Railway Company by the Institution as to Pr°^ingt a suitable site for a permanent Life-boat House at Fishguard, and also produced plan sent therewith. The matter was fully discussed, ana, tne Committee approving of the proposed site, it was proposed by Capt Titus Evans, sec- onded by Capt Francis Thomas, and unani- mously agreed that the same be accepted, suitable provision, being made for access thereto, and use of the present pathway. The proposed site is situate just outsiae the signal-box near to the Harbour S a
LETTERSTON COUNTY COURT CASE
LETTERSTON COUNTY COURT CASE At Haverfordwest County Court on Tuesday last Wm Davies, the llhos, Pic ton, farmer, sued Wm Lawrence, blacksmith, Letterston, for f 10.3 alleged to be due on a promissory note. The defendant, it appeared, purchased the ten- right and interest for C26 in Long baiden Wiston^ paving plaintiff £13 down, then a suin of £255 and the remainder by instalments, The plaintiff, however, alleged that the £ 2 5s was paid him to pay to a sub-tenant named Morris, and he now wished to recover £ 2 Tw as p ub of his pur- ChMrGjromJproduced receipts showing that the money had baen paid in full. His HOllour said he was afraid the plaintiff wanted too much. It was the plaintiff's business to get out Morris, and the verdict would be ia favour of the defendant with costs.

Salvation Army.—The lecture advertised to take place on Monday last, in connection with the Salvation Army, at the Temperance Hall, has been postponed to Monday evening next, when Capt. Lindsey will give an inter- I esting discourse on Twelve months' work in Exeter slums," t6 commence at 8 o'clock admission 2d. Mr James Owen will contri- ¡ bute a solo in the course of proceedings. It is hoped that the lecture will receive a good I share of public support. Phenomenon.—At 4.35 p.m. on Friday a remarkable rainbow was to be viewed from the rear of buildings on The Slade side of Main-street. The greater part of the arc was invisible, but the base appeared to rise direct- ly out of Llanpit and, being at such unusu- ally close quarters, presented a most unique spectacle, resembling a brilliant pillar of many- coloured fire. Wedding.—A very pretty wedding took place recently at Zoar Welsh Congregational Church, Maesteg, the contracting parties being Miss Edith M Evans (second daughter of the late Mr Jenkin Evans, manager of the Maesteg-Merthyr Colliery,), and Mr J F I. Thomas (eldest son of Mr and Mrs D Thomas, Goodwick House, Fishguard, and representa- tive of the firm of Messrs Falk, Stadelmann and Co., Ltd., manufacturers of electric fittings, &c., London). 1 he omciating min- ister was the Rev. D D Joseph, Newport, Mon. The bridesmaids, who looked very pretty, were Miss B Evans (sister of the bride), and Miss Lizzie Thomas (sister of the bride- groom). The bride was given away by Mr D Evans, M.E., Maesteg, and the best man was Mr W J Thomas, brother of the groom. Air and Mrs Thomas have taken up their resi- dence at Penarth. We wish the happy couple long life and prosperity. Social.—A very successful social in con- nection with Mr James Owen's choir was held in the Temperance Hall on Wednesday even- ing of last week. It was opened by a solo rendered by Mr Owen, whilst a duett was also contributed by Miss Flossie Reynhart and Mr Lew Davies. A sumptuous supper was then served to about 80 guests present, games being afterwards indulged in up to a late hour. The tables were presided over by Mrs Owen and Mrs Llewellyn George, who were assisted by the Misses James and Ueorge Mrs Edwards and Mrs Davies (West-st.); Misses M A Richards and M G Roberts, as- sisted by Miss L M Patterson, and the Misses E Howells and M Miles (Kensington-street). Others who assisted were the Misses Lottie Phillips, Myfanwy Lewis and E Evans (Glan- ainon). The choir members wish to thank the above-named ladies, especially Mrs Owen and Mrs Edwards, for having worked so as- siduously to bring the social to a success. The accompanists for the evening were the Misses Jennie Davies and L Patterson and Mr A J Hodges (the choir accompanist). The duties of treasurer and secretary were efficiently dis- charged by Messrs Charles Evans (Letterston) and J 0 Richards. Death.—In our report last week of the funeral of the late Mrs M Williams wife of Mr Levi Williams, tailor, who died Thursday, February 3rd, it should have been stated that I the Revs. W Morlais Davies and J D Sym- mons officiated at the house, and the Revs. Dan Davies and W Evans (vicar) at the gravesicle. Tabernacle—The Rev. J D Symmonds officiated at this place of worship on Sunday evening last, his discourses being much ap- preciated by all present. Funeral-The interment took place on Tuesday last at St Mary's Churchyard, of the mortal remains of Miss Margaret Jones, of Lower Fishguard, who has been for twenty years an inmate of Carmarthen Asylum. Mishap. On Friday evening, whilst skating on the rink in the Temperance Hall, Miss Lowry, one of the mistresses at the Inter- mediate School had the misfortune to sprain her ankle. Constabulary Change.—On March 1st Police Sergeant Rosser, who has been station- ed in the town for the past fifteen years. will retire from the force upon full superannuation after twenty-eight years' service in the County Constabulary. During his prolongued so- journ in this locality he has, by his genial disposition, gained a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, and we may safely ven- ture to prophesy that his retirement into pri- vate life will not be permitted to be passed over wiihout some tangible recognition being made of the esteem and respect in which he is held by the community at large. Bachelors At Home."—On Thursday evening the bachelors of the Mutual Improve- ment Society associated with Bethel Chapel, Fishguard, entertained the other members at an At Home." The event had been eager- ly looked forward to and its great success belied the expectations of the fair sex. An exceedingly interesting programme had been arranged, and the set of laws drawn up caused a great deal of laughter. I he chair was taken by the Rev D P David, and the first part of the programme consisted of the following items :-Recitation, "The Charge of the Light Brigade," Master D Comock t' song, The Taxicab," Master Stanley Burn- nand recitation, Morning s morning, lvir A Pyle soug, Topicals," Mr J S Thomas song, "The Soldier's life," Mr J A Roch (encored), and a humorous sketch rendered by three bachelors. During an interval the bachelors handed round tasty dainties. Owing to Mr A Pyle being called away, Mr F W Byrne superintended the waiters, whose smart, prompt and efficient attendance gain- ed wholesale compliments from the large and critical number present. Immediately after the interval the reverend chairman rendered the song, Oueen of the earth." Then follow- ed Mark Antony's oration by Mr K r. vvn- liams, a Socialist address by Master Allan Gledhill; a song, Love me and the world is mine," by Mr J H Roch a reciation, "The Highland Reaper, by Master D Cornock, and an encore-" The Slave's Dream "—to the last-named. Then followed the tit-bit of the evening, which took the form of a grand auction sale of eligible bachelors. The ham- mer was capably weilded by Mr J S Thomas, while Master Jackie George acted as his clerk. The humorous description of the different" lots" evoked considerable laughter, but also whetted the competitive spirit amongst the four bidders. Four well-known local batchelors were disposed of, amidst a scene of great excitement, at huge prices. At the close of the proceedings a hearty vote of thanks to the promoters, for the entertain- ment which they had provided, was accorded on the motion of Miss May Burnnand, second- ed by Mrs Cuthbert Thomas. Cymmrodorion.—Mr Edward Perkins, Pen- ysgwarne, was to address the Fishguard cym- mrodorion on Tuesday evening last, but owing to various circumstances, only a small number attended, and the lecture was there- fore abandoned. It is to be hoped that Mr Perkins will arrange to address the society next Tuesday evening, Feb. 22nd, and that the attendance will be worthy of the lecturer and his subject, which is The old agricul- tural customs of Pencaer."—The Rev G. A. Edwards, B.A., Carmarthen, will not address the Cymmrodorion during the present session as he has just undergone a medical operation. Anxiety.—Deep sympathy is on all hands extended to Mr and Mr John Evans of Rope- yard Lane, whose son, Mr David W Evans, was a member of the crew of the liner Lima whose wreck upon the Pacific coast of South America is reported, they being still without any information as the fate of their son. Opera.—During the present week the boards of the Temperance Hall are occupied by the Elster-Grime Opera Company, which is at- tracting large audiences by reason of the ex- cellence of its programme which is changed nightly. :rrhis (Wednesday) evening, The daughter of the regiment" will be staged, whilst "Carmen" and "Faust are the pieces billed for the two suoceedmg nights. On Saturday there will be a matinee perform- ance of "The Waterman," preceded by a miscellaneous concert, whilst in the evening The Lilyof Killarney will be produced.
