---CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, TUESDAY. Tha attendance on 'Change to-day was fairly good, and a moderate amount of business was done in steam and house coal, prices for all descriptions remaining unaltered. Small coal, both steam and bituminous, were in moderate request at Monday's quotations. Welsh cokes were in good demand, and the enquiry for patent fuel and pitwood was fairly active. In our local freight market to-day chartering for steam has been fairly active, and the features reported have been above the average of the last few days. Rates for the higher Mediterranean ports con- tinue firm, and a similar remark applies to West Indian, Eastern, Spanish, and Gibraltar freights. Bay ports and costing rates are sceady, States outward quotations remain unchanged. The following'include the latest operations to- day :-Havre, 6 111 (Solent) Cadiz, 9s 7d (G. E. Wood) Venice, 9i 10^1, local boat St. Malo, 6s 6i (Hettie) Constantinople, 7" 9d (Clieveden) St. Nazaire, 7fcs (Rosebud), ó-bre3 Border Chieftain) Piiaeu«, option Syra, 7s loid (Prydain) Port S lid, 8s 61 (Ambassador) Bilbao, 6s 3d (St. Audries. Newport loading) St. Brieux, 7s, fuel (Rathkeuny, Swansea load- ing). Sail.—This market continues very firm, and the fixtures reported are all at enhanced rates. The demand for prompt tounage continues good, more especially for the River Plate and Brazil ports. Fixtures :-Bahia, 21s Buenos Ayres. option Boca, free expenses, 28i 3d Rio, 24s, good terms charter (Woodfield). Ore rates from Bilbao continue firm, with a good demand for tonnage to load for the Bristol Channel pores, and there is also a good inquiry for tonnage to load at Carthagena, Huelva, Car- loforte, and Benisaf.
-----SWANSEA EXCHANGE.
SWANSEA EXCHANGE. SWANSEA, TUKSDAY. There were some absentees to-day, but the attendance, nevertheless, was a good one. The fluctuation in block tin again occasioned consider. able discussion, and was felt to be a very disturb- ing element. A strong opinion prevailed that the present improved position of the metal market generally arises from the natural expansion of trade in all branches, and that consumption is rapidly overtaking the productive power of the country, especially in such industries as are repre- sented on this exchange. This opinion leads to a As regards pig-iron, Scotch warrants still exhibit an upward tendency in price, having advanced fully 5s to 6s per ton since they touched their lowest point some time back. Middles- brough pigs are following at a correspondingly advancing late, as will be seen by price list below. Hematites, although under other iiifluencss than those which affect native mine-made pigs such as Scotch and Middlesbrough, are advancing in sympathy in a measure with the present enhanced freights. All the iron and steel works are in full operation, and they are well supplied with orders. The strike at Ebbw Vaie stjli continues; and this, together with the stoppage at Landore Siemens' Steel Works gives additional impetus and acti vity to other local steel works. Since last 'Change there has been a further advance in the price of tin plates. The demand as reported from America fully justifies the action of the manufacturers, as stocks there are low, and canners are not sufficiently supplied. Stocks in this country are depleted, viz Swansea, 75,587 Newport, 71.988 Liverpool, 47,784 Bristol,' 1,325 Cardiff. 1,774- Llanelly, 1,300 making total of 199,758 boxes. But since the above ,¡,. t stocks have cone down at Swansea to 61,904 boxes. We are struck with tbe assimiiated quantities in stock at Newport and Swansea, especially as a much larger number of the works are within the radius of Swansea delivery. The explanation for this is that large quantities of tin plates are sent from the adjacent ports to Liverpool for re- shipment to America, and carried hy this route at a cheaper rate than if brought to Swansea for direct shipment—a state of things arising undoubtedly from the combined excessive charges of the local railways and of shipment chaiges at Swansea; and until these are revised aud lowered, so as to give buyers a preference for Swansea, we fear the transfer of plates to I" 1 11 uiverpoDi win De on the increase.
