CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, WEDNESDAY. 'Change to-day was well attended. and the business transacted in the staples of the district was about the average. For steam coal there was a good demand, and considerable aaies were effected at the old quotations. The bituminous coal trade was moderately brisk, without any appreciable change in vaiues. Small steam coal w¡¡ plentiful and the marketsweak,butNo.3 small was scarce, and what was sold realized high prices. Welsh cokes were again in good request at the prices obtained for this commodity for come time past. In oar local freight market to-day chartering for steam was moderately active, more especially for the higher Mediterranean porta. Rates for this direction were, if anything, a shade firmer, but there was no material alteration in Eastern, Spanish, West Indian, or Gibraltar freights. Coasting rates were steady. Baltic nnn. States quotations remain unchanged. The followinf include the latest operations :— Genoa, 9" 3d (Piymothian); Lisbon, 8s 3d (Cor- «on); Leghorn, 10-) 6d, fuel (Rhine) Danube, 9" 6d (Wynnstay); G¡br..ltar, 8s 71,1 (Annie Thomas) Marseilles, lOfos (Gwentland); Port Said, 8s 6d (Bot.kcnna Bay); V,-nic, 9< 101,1 and again at same rate for (Walter Thomas); Ortona, 10" 3d coal, Us fuel (Garonne); Gibral- tar, 8,19.1 (Rapid), and again at same rate for (V"!o) Naples, 9< 6,1 (Minerva) St N "zaire, 7fcs (Ccuutess Eveiyu); Port Said, 8, 6d (Germanta), and agllom sam!) rate for Ioc.*I b.,at Constanti- nople, 7", 9 i (Nellie) Genoa, 9". 500 delivery (Dis- covery) Alexandra, 8 14d (Fastnet). Sail.—The demand continues active for this class of tonnage, and a fair amount of chartering business has been pnected. Rates for the R'ver Fiate and Braz'ts continue Srm, and the same may be said of Cape, West Indian, and South American freights. Mediterranean rates are steady. Baltic quiet. Coasting freights remain unchanged. The following fixtures have been reported for Newport loading :—Rosario, 37s 6d, ra)ia Calcutia, 22<, railf, large veeael. Ore.—Rates from Bilbao continue arm, with a steady demand for tonnage to loud for ports in the Bristol. For Carthagena, Benisaf, and Huelva there is a better inquiry, more especially for discharging on the continent. East and West Coast, and Uotted Kingdom. There is nothing cew with regard to Elba, MarbeUa.and Carloforte freight' but from the latter fair employment is still offe.-iug for handy steamers to load for Antwerp.
! NEWPORT EXCHANGE.
NEWPORT EXCHANGE. NEWPORT, WZDNK8DAI. Saveral sectional groups of the ruet-d trades who arM usually drawn together by the amnitiesof trade did not put in an appearance on 'Change to- day, thus seriously affecting the goodly average which is generally maintained &t the weekly gatherings. It war, reported that there were two disrupting causes, one being the special invitation given by the directors of the Barry Dock Com- pany to the Society of Mechanical Engineers to inspect the works of this gigantic enterprise, while the other cause was the allurements for pleasure- seekers held out by the weather for a local race meeting. Under the circumstances the volume of bueiness effected was necessar'Iy of a limited character. The tone of the market waa firm and healthy in the extreme, and prices in all branches of the metal trades were well sustained. The strike at Ebbw Vale is still a source of con- siderable anxiety not only to colliery proprietors, but also to the managers of other iron and coal works who are similarly conditioned to those at Ebbw Vale. So far as it was possible to get Wtthin absolute touch of the contracts effected on 'Change to-day, they ruled as follows, nameiy :— Coat.—A brisk demancl with demurrttge incr'MM)in(!. THE AWDL.
THE AWDL. TO THE KDITOR. SiB,—Allow me to say a word or two with reference to the awdl controversy in your columns. I have read with much interest the pro and con arguments of yonr correspondents on che above subject. I believe your correspondent in last Friday's issue went beyond his license while advocating the annihilation of the anciant daughter of the Weish muse (cynghanedd). The above suggestion is rather unbecoming woeo we consider that the writer himself is a Welshman and a poet of no mean reputation. Mr Rowland thinks the Welsh cyngbanedd fit for nothing except to decorate churchyard tombstones. I bsg to differ widely from him on this point. His knowledge of the Welsh alliteration must "s very limited indeed, hence his desire to extermi- nate it. By all means let those who love and cheriah her do so kill her not. I quite agree with Gurnos Jones on this point. Let the compe- tition for the national chair be tree, all competitors to chose the a!p<M or p?-yddest. Composing in the awdl metre is as natural to some of our national bards us breathing. The close restrictions of the cyKpAanMM do not seem to be a burden to them wheu the'r minds are on the wings of imagination. When reading "Rothsay Castle, by Caledfryn Cariad," by Dyfed and Cartref," by Berw, we are not imbued with the idea that sense is sacrificed for sound," as Mr Rowlands mainta'ns. Here every sentence is pregnant with high thoughts, and dressed in the most sublime language. He again thinks that each poet should choose his own dear subject for competition. This would be a novelty in the eisteddfodic circle; but I am afraid that competitors and adjudicators alike would not relish this as genuine food. We have already a host of grumblers in the eistedd- fodic field who are never satisfied with the result of any adjudication, but were we to ttdopt Mr Rowlands'a suggestion, no doubt their number would increase 100 per cent., and soon grow a &c general peat in the world of literature.—I:un. &c., D. W DAVIES. Croworton, Sept. 15,1888.
PARNELL DEFENCE FUND.
PARNELL DEFENCE FUND. TO THE EDITOR SiB,—I do not know when I uave read anythiDK so altogether satisfactory a-; that which appeared in to-day,3 issue of the <SoM<A Wales D<n!y News, viz-, the unconditional release of Mr John Dillo" and the opening up of a fund towards assisting Mr Parnell in the expense he has been put to 1° defending himsetf and his fellow members agaiost such abominable charges made Hgainst them by the TtMes. It would '-eem as if it had been reserved for Mr R N. Hall that on the eve of starting the above fund we sbonid see our hope& fully realized, for I take it that the splendid efforts put forth by Liberals throughout the principality in demanding the immediate release ot John Dillon have had a great deal to do with this pleasing result, and I sincerely hope that the steps now taken by the South Wales Liberal Federation in opening a Pencil defence fund will be taken up with the same determined spirit, andlo that the same means may be adopted as in the case of John Dillon-I mean a hoase-to-bofse canvass, and ultimately prove as complete a success. I ought perhaps to mention that a list lies on the cable of the Cardiff Workmen's Liberal Institute.—I am, &.c.. T. L. WHITT. St. Mary's-street, Cardiff.
THE MERTHYR VACANCY.
THE MERTHYR VACANCY. TO THE EDITOR. SiB,—Permit me a small space in your columns to answer Nome of the unjust attacks made upon me by Mr John Lewis, onr miners' secretary for this district, as prmted in your columns. It seems to me that he is determined to do all that he can to damage me. He has stated that it was a prearrangemont between the Merthyr delegates and mysc)f on Tuesday, September the lltb, that I was to be nominated at that meeting." A greater untruth could never have been uttered. I' never know that it was the intention of the Merthyr men to nommate.. me a all, leave alone that tbt-y were going to do so that night. He says again that had he been at the meeting ha would have dona bis utmost to prevent the trickery." Although I do not believe that nominating any person that night was a wise step, yet 1 cannot see that it merits the term trickery, for they bad a perfect right to name persons then- Thia is proved by the wording of the circular catling the meeting, which reads as follows (third paragraph):— The object of the meetin is to dicuss the bility of markinz cut tile th. wa,s carrie,.l unkniiiiously at the iiia-s meetin, Ab &von, viz., That the time has arrived <vhen a labour candidate should be selected to stand for the seat by. the of our co'UM to the !:oactuaion to selecc a. labour candidate, we ahaJI then discuss the ways and means to support him. Why shoutd John Lewis and his party make such a disturbance because two persons were named there that night, especially seeing that the list of nomination swas left open till Saturday ? John Lewis said that the Abernant meeting ignored the Liberal Association." I should like to ask any man of common sense if anyone is justified in making such an assertion when only one individual out of about 100 delegates mentioned anything about- ignoring the Liberal Association. Mr John Lewis was not present at this meeting, and I would advise him not to listen to eo much tittle-tattle.—I am, to.. Sept. 18. D. MORGAN.
CRICKET.
CRICKET. THE HASTINGS WEEK.-SOUTH OF ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIANS. At Hastings yesterday the Australians gained a. over the South or England by nine wickets. Less than an hour's actual play proved sufBcient: yestt rday to bring the match to a cone usion. The second innings of the South finished off for th" addition of øix runs, and the Australians were left with 59 to get to win on a hard ):round. This was. of course, au easy ta.,k and though McDonaeH was caught and bowled for four. BaDnomMn and Trott hit off the runs between them. both playing capital cricket. It is some time since the colonial team have been seen to such advaiitage it a.!t points, and the success must be very te thew, after their recent failures. Score:— SOUTH. 1st Innings. 2nd Innings.
