------------MONEY MARKET.…
MONEY MARKET. LONDON, Saturday. Money was in good demand, and supplies are steadily diminishing on continued borrowings by the Bank of England. A furtber shipment of £ 526 000 in gold is advised from New York, makinp a total of £828,400 for the week there is, therefore, leas anxiety on the score of bullion. Nevertheless, the market con- tinues to gain in steadiness. The charge for short loans is 4 per cent., and the discount rate for three months bills is 4A per cent. Tenders for 21,600,000 Treasury Bills are to be received at the Bank of England on the 3rd prox. Whilst Stock Exchange business to-day has been quiet, the general tone of the markets has been firmer, owing to the healthier condition into which the Money Market is being brought by the action of the Bank of England. Quotations of most issues have hardened. The Mining and General Electric Lamp Dotrpany, Limited, with a capital of cioo, ooo in Li shares, whereof 20,000 shares are ,;&ken in part payment by the vendors, the remainder being offered for subscription, has been formed for the purpose of acquiring from the New Portable Electric Lamp and Power Syndicate Company, Limited, their patents and system for the maoufaoture of miners' lamps, for the lighting of railway carriages, and lamps for domefttio purpol'l<'S. From the exhaustive experi- meutll conducted by the vendors, both in laboratories and in coalpits, it is believed that the problems which have confronted inventors • in designing a suitable electrio lamp have been solved. It is absolutely safe, can be maintained for over ten hours, is Jells than six pounds in weight, can be sold for 21, and the cost of maintenance does not exceed 3d per week. Several important companies, both colliery and iron, have tested the lamp, and have found it very satisfactory. Owing to negotiations already entered into it would appear that there will be a large sale of the article, and from reports supplied to the company by competent engineers it is estimated that a safe 15 per cent. will be returned on the capital of the company. The prospectus appears in cur advertisement columns. Three of the directors are Fellows of the Royal Society, and the Earl of Crawford was cn the Royal Commission of Mines; Mr Higson is one of the largest colliery manailers. and the managing director of the Ebbw Vale Steel Company. THE IRON TRADE.
THE IRON TRADE. WOLVERHAMPTON, Saturday. Trade here rules steady, but there is lass vitality about new business than could be desired. This is to be attributed to the nearness of the closing month of Ihe year. Finished iron is very firm because of the advances in raw materials. Pig* have risen nearly 5s per ton on the minimum coal, 2s to 2s 6d and cokes, 4s 6d to 5s. Sheets of 20in. g. are now quoted £6 lbs, and 24in. g. £ 7 to £ 7 los. Bars are maintained at £ 7 10s for best, with J! &s ofi as the Karl of Dudley's quotation. Messrs Barrows and one or two other houses still adhere to the old figure of £1; but Messrs Hingley, the New British Iron Company, and similar firms demand C7 108 for best, and Z6 10s second sorts. The report of an advance of 5s on hoops is confirmed. Pigs very strong.

THE TIN-PLATE TRADE.
THE TIN-PLATE TRADE. LIVERPOOL, Saturday.—A quiet tone has prevailed in the tin-plate market here throughout the week, but prices have in the main been s eady, and have not re- ceded any further as it was anticipated they would do. The late quotations, such as they are, have, on the whole, being well maintained. The demand this week, without bel-n extra brisk, has been just sufficient to sustain the market in its present position. The demand for the States consists chiefly of specifications for a variety of coke tin plates and Bessemer steel cokes, and also for similar lots of Siemens' steel plates with coke finish. There has b en a somewhat better demand for the continental m irkets, and the home trade has been a little brisker. These enquiries and orders were also chiefly for the cokegrade plates. In charcoal and best charcoal tin plates there has only been a moderate business doing, and this also has neen the case with terne plates. Now t's to prices, these also are vadous—very various, and range for coke tin plates an" Bessemer steel cokes-these mostly run together-at from 12s 9d to 13s and 13a 3d IC Wales, and M-mens' steei cokes 13s 3d to 13s 9d IC. Wasters, noth cokes and steels, are asked for a little more frequently than they have been lately, and vary in price from 10s 9d to 12s 3d. Charcoal tin plates are 13s 6d to 14s 6d IC, Siemens' charcoal plates 15s to 16* 6d, and be t charcoals 17s to 20s a.nd up to 22s 6d IC for the hig.i-class large-size plate,. Terap plates are 22s 6u to <45s 6d, and 26s 6d to s. Terne w?asters are 21s to 22s and 23s, but there is not much doing in the latter just now, nor will there be for some time to come yet. Toere is plenty of room for improvement, both in the demand and p ice for terne plates. Tin is advan- cing aaain, and is now B101 5s to B102 per ton. Scotch pigs 40, lid to 41s 3;d, hematites 43s lOd to 44s 2d, and Middlesbrough pigs art: 33s 3d to 33s 5d. SWANSEA, Saturday.—During the week the shipments of tin plates from the docks were 68,771 boxes; and the recoip s at the dock stores from works, 4,498, stocks standins. at 69,777 boxes, against 95,568 this day week, and 7o,128 this day

FATHER IGNATIUS AND MR R.…
FATHER IGNATIUS AND MR R. CORY. We have been requested to pubUsb^tbe-fol- lowing correapondenc(- [COPY.] Jesus t only Pax. Llanthony Abbey. Jaly-ZBfd, 1888.. My dear Sir,—I received your last letter some time- since, but have been too busy to reply. I am much obliged to you for writing me so much, and I shall be very glad to have a little talk with you upon the poiats of your letter. As to the printed paper you sent me with professed extracts from my writings, they are in- tentional and deliberate misrepresentations of what I teach; in fact, to all intents and purposes, most in. famous lies, told to injure a fellow-man for party pur- poses. The paper only merits the most absolute con- tempt, and was drawn up by the devil, and the devil may have all the profit he can get out of it. As to Mr Chiniquy, I should be very sorry to have to do with such a person, and his abuse would be a com- pliment. And now, dear sir, will you let me say that it seems to me that every ne who trusts to Jesus only and entirely for salvation, and proves the reality of his faith by a holy life and heavenly conversation, is a true Christian, whether he be Protestant or Catholic. If Mr Chiniquy, and others like him, would try and draw people to Christ instead of stirring up strife and animosity, I would own them as brethren with all gladness. We have a very short time to stay on earth. Time is passing away very quickly, Exalting Jesus is the great work of the true believer, which God will always bless. This is the work I have set myself to do, and God gives me thousands of souls for my hire. Christian Protestants and Christian Catholics work with me, others will not. I am equally persecuted by unchristiah Catholics and unchristian Protestants. I have had 27 years of those bitter persecutions, yet in Hi- mercy our Lord makes me His messenger to mul. titudes. I have messages of love sent to me from dying beds, and from men of all ages, classes, and countries. This could not be unless the Great Holy Spirit used me as His own instrument for our precious Savionr's glory and the salvation of immortal souls. I am quite contented to keep my Popery, as you call it, it the background and if Protestants would do the same with their Protestantism, more souls would be saved, and there would be less hatred and rancour among the ranks of the professing disciples of Him who says By this shall all men know ye are My disciples, if ye love one another," I wish you could come and see me here, talk over in a Christian and intelligent spirit the points upon which you and I differ, for I do not hold the ideas and doctrines you impute to me. I do not call you brother as 1 would willingly do, because I see you drop the word in addressing me this last time, ami fearina my using it would be unpleasant to you, but believe me to be your affectionate fellow- servant in the work of our Lord, (Signed; T. LEYCESTER LINE, [COPY.] Dear Sir,—In reply to yours of the 5th iust., whilst I admire your candour, yet I cannot ignore the fact that with all your earnest evanzelic.il pre tching, which I, with many other Chi istian-, highly appreciate and pr,y God to bless, nevertheless, judging irom the extracts of your sermons delivered some time ago and received by me after your services were held here. there is not a doubt now in my mind you have a great admiration for the head of the Papacy, and that you endorse the deadly heresies of that Apostacy who, having, like the Scribes and Pharisees of old, taken the teaching of unregenerate fallible men in lieu of the in. corruptible and infallible word of God, by which alone we all shall be judged, hence rhe need absolutely of your and my reading it in the childlike, teaciiable spirit conformable with the Saviour's express command to search the Scriptures, asking God, as King David did, toopen the eyes of our understanding, so that H is word and not man may be the sole rule of our faith and practice. How can it be possible for Protestants holding such vi^ws and doctrines to work with Roman Catholics, who hold dogmas to the contrary, and who place the Virgin Mary (who distinctly says, whatsoever He (Jesus) says that 00 ye) as a mediatress along with and in the place of Jesus Christ, the oniy God-ordained Mediator between God and man. which dogma gives the lie to Christ's declaration, "II am the way, the truth,,and the life no man cometh to the Father but by Me," in fact, adopting your own motto of "Jesu" only," who also says He alone has all power in heaven and earth, and that God is a Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth, and most emphatically denounces images and the worship of Himself "y images. I refer also to the 22nd chap, of Rev., 8th and 9th verses, wherein you will see that when John fell down before the feet, even of an angel, he was rebuked and told to do it not, but to worship God only. With regard to your further remarks re being His re- deemed people, recollect we are not such, except we have the conscious assurance and knowledge of sins forgiven, and thus accepted in Him, by a genuine re- pentance towards God and fai'h in the Lord Jesus, thus being born again of the Holy Spirit, and washed in the preious blood of Christ, and producing in our lives that beautiful cluster of the fruits of the Spirit (Gal. 5 chap and 22 and 23 verses), and trusting alone in the finished work of Christ. We hate all false and unscriptural doctrine ana teaching. It is certain we shall get wrong and off the right track when swerving from God's word one tittle. Kev. 22 chap., 19 v., proves this, wherein it says, If any man take away from the book of this prophecy, God hall take away his part out of the book of life." Also Luke 16 chap., 17 v., It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than one tittle of the law t- fail." I exceedingly regret that you do not disavow the extracts J sent you of what pur. ported to be portions of your seimon, and which, I think, you must now se, if you had been guided by God's word and spi-it, you would not have uttered. As to Mr Guinness's book which I sent you on the glorious Reformation and Romanism, he without doubt takes a correct view of same. I know him to be a Christian brother of eminent piety and profound know- ledge of God's word, who has sent out from his college hundreds of excellent men well equipped for the Gospel mission field.-With best wishes, yours very truly, (Signed) R. CORY. The Rev. J. L. Lyne, Llanthony Abbey.
