SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A TRAVEL- LING DRAPER AT ABERGAVENNY. At the Abergaveuny police-ooart, on Wed- nesday, Peter Eli, a travelling draper from the Hilla, who is well-known in Abergavenny, was charged with not delivering up the whole of his property to tbe trustee of his estate in liquida- tion, about 12 months ago. Mr Gibbs appeared for the trustee, Mr James Douglas, stuff mer- chant, at Bradford, and Mr S. W. Gardner de- fended. It appeared that on the 3rd of May. 1876, Mr Eli filed a petition in liquidation, and at a meeting of his creditors defendant pro- duced his books of acooanta in connection with his different districts, and eaid that the books prodooed were all he had. It was, however, subsequently foand that he had withheld the books relating to the Penpergwm, Abergavenny. Limmier, and Blaetiavon rounds, and also some jbookavf accounte for Ebbw Vale. These facts were formally proved by a number of witnesses. 'Thomas Borthwick, 27, Charles-street, Cardiff, [proved buying these accounts from defendant, isome at 13s. and some at 15s. in the E, to the lamount of about £";0. Prisoner wascommitted jfor trial, but admitted to bail.
I THE FLOODS. 0 j
I THE FLOODS. 0 j I On Monday night the rain fell so heavily j ;and continuously, that in many parts of South j Wales the floods have actually been higher! than they were at the time of the memorable jCwmcarne disaster. The amount of damage J dens has been very great, both to buildings i and live stock, although, as far as we can leans, I fortunately without loss of human life. OUT own town stands so high above the river, and the river itself is so rapid, that we scarcely know what such a flood really is, carrying away, in its relentless course, houses, bridges, railways, and buildings of various kinds, as well as devastating streets, roads, fields, and, in i fact, everything in its way. The floods in the } neighbourhood of Bridgend have been the most severe, and it has been estimated that S 0,000 worth of damage has been done to that place affine. Near Cowbridge, the registered rain- fall was, from Monday morning, about g.o., to the same time on Tuesday, 1*58 inches, equal to about 160 tons to the acre.. j At BRIDGEND, the lower parts of the town! were submerged upwards of eight feet, the pressure of water being so great as to break through shutters and doors, carrying away or breaking furniture, beer barrels, hay stacks,1 shop counters, &c., &c. In Dunraven Place, the house of Dr. Verity (father of the gentle- man of that name living at Garndiflaith) was entirely wrecked, the water filling the lower' apartments nearly to the ceiling, damaging the furniture in the dining and drawing rooms, and flooding the cellars. It had forced in the j shutters AND windows, and thus entered the J house. The occupants of the house were 'placed in imminent danger by the water rush- jing so rapidiy upon them, and only effected an escape with great difficulty. The amount :of property destroyed in the shops and houses ;of this place was very great, several persons being said to have lost some thousands of pounds worth-one jeweller's shop is said to have been cleared out by the water, which broke the show-cases, &c. Some of the < houses with their foundations are partly j (washed away in one case, a poor man had his house thus partially carried away, and lost aCSo which he had laid up in a chest of draw- ers, that article of furniture being, unfortu- nately for him, among those that floated off. At Aberavon, Abercarn, Abergavenny, Bar- goed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Cow- bridge, Cwmavon, Ferndale, Glyncorrwg, Gilfach-goch, Hafoa, Llandaff, Loughor Valley. Maesteg, Merthyr, Neath, Newport, IPandy, Pentre, Penycraig, Pontypridd, Rhymney Valley, Resolven, Rhondda Valley, Tonddu, Tongwynlais, Tredegar, Troedyrhiw, Usk, Whitchurch, Ystrad Mynach, and several other places there was great damage done in various ways, trees torn ■up, hayricks submerged and swept away. stones of 5 cwt. carried across roads and into fields, carts and farming implements washed miles from their owners' residences, bridges swept away, hdusos blown down, sheep and cattle drowned, a macadamised road ploughed lup to A depth of 4 feet, a boiler, 12 feet long,, and weighing 2 tons, carried a distance of 100 yards, works stopped by being flooded, and in fact, almost every conceivable mischief which water could accomplish. The mail train due at Liantrissant tibout 5.30 a m., had a narrow escape on Tuesday. iTwelve heavy baulkr, of timber had been i washed across the rtols, which were fertunately seen, bat only just in time, by & man named j Thomas, who actually pushed ten of them away single-handed (a railway official assisting with the other two). The signalman saw Iwhat Thomas was about, and SIGNALLED the train, which was pulled up as the last timber wca being removed.

Resolutions will, at the ensuing meeting,be submitted to the proprietors for declaring dividends for the last half -yetu ending June 30, on the preferential stock and shares at the rate EI £5 per cent. per annnm and on the ordinary stock at the rat* of L6 10s. per cent, per annual; such dividends to be paid ou ifee 4TH of September proximo. The services of Mr George Cave, who has been a member of the committee of management for 18 yeàrs, have, through his lamented decease, been lost to the proprietors, bat, considering that the work of the committee is not so oner- ous as it Was prior to the arrangement with the Great Western Railway Company in 1875, the committee deem it anueoeasary TTAT the vacancy should be filled.
- THE HARVEST AND THE WEATHER.
THE HARVEST AND THE WEATHER. A oorrespondeDf, writing from Usk on the agricultural prospects in Monmouthshire, aays Wheat ia below the average, bat the straw crop is good, Barley is below the average, both in straw and grain. Chits are above the average, both in grain and straw; the best crop we have had for many years. Bean crop is good. Peat much below the average. Alover croon rzood. AND hay a very good crop first-class condition. Swee suffered very much from4 Iter in in the season pe of the fly; some persons naa 10 sow UT second time, oat the crop is above the AVERAFT The tnrnipvrop is very good, above the avfrege. The same re- mark applies to carrots. On the whole, this 18 the best season the farmers of oar district have had for several years. The Mark Lane Express says:-Sani;hine Is now wanted to harden the grain, and check A tendency to sprouting. The root crops have benefited by the rain, and turnips and mangolds promise well, but complaints of the potato di- sease, unfortunately, appear to be on the in- crease. A telegram from Charlesville, Ireland, says that rain has fallen continuously for several days, greatly damaging the cropa. In South Scot laud the standing crops have been greatly damaged by recent rains.
THE TELEPHONE.
THE TELEPHONE. By means of this wonderful instrument, Mr. W. H. Preece, the well-known electrician, who read a paper oa the subject before the British Association lately, says be was able, while at Boston, to carry on with great ease, conversa- tions with Mr. Watson, at New Brunswick, 37 miles off. He also spoke with another gentleman 24 miles off. He transacted busi- noss over A wire 3 miles long, and at a shorter i distance he heard Professor Bell breathe. The iastroHvent transmits all the sounds of the voice, j saoh as coughing, sneeeing, laughter, whistling, j &o. The erticulatiug telephone is a smalt i instrument, similar jn appearance to a stethe- eoope, and ooold be put into the pocket. At the END .A i. short UWIITFU TUBE is placed a ) permanent magnet, to ttie end of which is fixed I a small piece of soft jrof called a pole-piece. ] Around the pole-piece is a coil of about 250 i yards of extremely fine wire, and in front of this wire a tiiiu diaphragm of very soft iron. The sound of the voice causes tbis diaphragm to i vibrate, aud the vii)ratiotiri are communicated by currents of electricity along the connecting wire to the receiving end, where there is a preoisely similar instrument, the diaphragm of which vibrates in accordance with that of the transmitting instrument, and repeats exactly the tones of the speaker, not precisely of the original strength, but so as to be readily dis- tinguishable. TJie inventor is Professor Graham Bell, of Boston, who has devoted nearly the whole of his life to examination of the vocal organs. t At a public lecture by Mr. Preece, gxperlmenfa were made at Plymouth between the Plymouth anct.Exeter Post Offices and the Guildhall, by means of the telegraph wires, end the results were very satisfactory. Sir Wm. Thomson, president, said the sounds came more perfectly than be had ever heard through a speaking tube.
.REMARKABLE WALKING FEAT.
REMARKABLE WALKING FEAT. On Sunday morning William Gale, of Cardiff,, commenced the hitherto unaccomplished feat of walking 1,500 miles in 1,000 hours at Lillie Bridge Grounds, at WeBt Brompton. For some years Captain Barclay's walk of 1.000 miles ia 1,000 hours has been considered the greatest oa record, but it remains to be seen whether Gale, who is 42 years of age, stands 5ft 3 £ inM and weighs &t. 101b., can put this feat in the shade. He recently, at Cardiff, covered 1,000 miles ia 27 days, 18 hours, 44 min., so that he com- mences his London task with very fair creden- tials. The time Qccupied iu covering the distance will be six weeks less eight hours, finishing on Saturday, October 6th, at 6 p.m. Although he has bad very indifferent weather- to contend against, he nevertheless displays great aptitude for his task, and walks with a fine elastic step, and remarkably well. The ground is in splendid order, and measures 440 yierds in circumference,
