NATIONAL ABSTINENCE. [To the Editor of the CARMARTHEN JODESAL.] SIR,-Will you kindly allow me to call the atten- tion of the Clergy, Ministers, secretaries of churches, Brotherhoods, Guilds, Christian En- deavours, and all similar organisations to the fol- lowing resolution, passed at a large conference, re- presentative of the Commercial, Industrial, Educa- tional, and Religious Communities of this City held last evening. The resolution reads as follows:— "That this Conference recognising that the evils ever associated with the Liquor Traffic, press iwlth increased injury upon the Country at this time of National crisis, and recognising also that ¡ tthe surest method of ending these evils is by per- I sonal abstinence, calls upon the Churches, Brotherhoods, etc., of Cardiff and District to initiate a campaign amongst their members, urging for the sake of influence and example to the rest of the community the patriotic duty of abstinence from the use of all Intoxicating Liquors, ,at least during the war." A further resolution called upon sympathisers in the various districts to organise similar conferences, to show the government that public opinion will loyally support any measures it is found necessary to adopt in dealing with the liquor traffic, and to get the churches to give a lead in this all important matter. The annual eisteddfod in connection with Naza- reth Chapel, Pontyeates, was presided over by Mr. Mervyn Peel, Danyrallt, and Mr. Alfred Stephens, Kidwelly (prospective Unionist candidates for East and West Carmarthenshire respectively), and the Rev. A very successful eistectdiod was held at the Public Institute on Good Friday evening under the auspices of the Salem and of Hope, ilaiiciuverv. Mr W K. Mr Walter R. James, the chairman, remarked that he was very pleased to preside over a movement associated with the Band of Hope, because this association helped to raise the tone 01 tne people. This year it appears the committee made an alteration in the number to compose the choir, but Mr. Cole claimed that he should compete under similar rules to those of last year. The adjudicator said that Mr. Cole's party was the best this year again, bu.t the committee have temporarily withheld the award until the die- pute is settled. MILITARY SPORTS AT CARMARTHEN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS. Favoured with ideal weather, the military spon-3, under the auspices of the officers of the 2nd/lst Pembroke Yeomanry and the 2nd/4th Battalion the Welch Regiment, which were held at the Carmar- then Park on Easter Monday were in all respects a decided success. There was a large attendance, and although no railway excursions were run there was a large influx of visitors to the town. The entries were so numerous that a number of heats had to be run off in the morning before the time at which the sports were advertised to commence. The Band of the 2nd/4th Battalion the Welch Regiment gave selection of music during the afternoon. The com- petiriuns were confined to members of the Pembroke In. <mial Yeomanry Reserve and the Reserve Bat- talion 4th Welch Regiment, now stationed at Car- marthen, Llanelly, and Llandilo, and to the Carmar- then Scout and Cadet Companies. The Llanelly contingent of the 4th Welch marched down to Carmarthen on Sunday in readiness for the sports. The men, numbering about 180, looked re- markably well despite their long journey, and on Tuesday they marched back to Llanelly. During the afternoon about 180 members -of the 2nd/4th Welsh Regiment, stationed at Llanelly, gave a display in Swedish Drills. Their precision and unity of movement de- monstrated their efficiency, And elicited well-merited applause from the spectators and officers. A section of the 2nd/4th Welch Regiment (Carmarthen), under the command of Sergt.-Major Burns, also gave a fine physical display. SMOKING CONCERT. In the evening an interesting smoking concert was held at the Soldiers' Club. when the prizes won at the sports were distributed by Lord Dvnevor. The y Chaplain, the Rev. Principal Parry, presided over a largo attendance. »- Lord Dynevor, who was loudly cheered on rising to speak, congratulated the troops upon having such an excellent club. The club, he said, was a boon and a blessing. The men were splendidly looked alter by Principal Parry, Mr. Griffith Owen, and Mr. Fred Humphreys, and he would particularly like to refer to the generosity of Sir Owen Philipps towards the club (cheers). Those who had responded to their country's call, continued his lordship, needed some recreation after their hard work of training. If, when the time came for them to go to the front, they exhibited the same dash as they had shown at the sports, and they charged the enemy in the same way as they had charged the tape,—well, there would be no Germans left (laughter). Sports were a great tradition in the life of our country, and nothing surprised the French so much at the be- ginning of the war as when our brave fellows came out of the trenches, and the first thing they did was to play football (applause). That caught on, and the French learnt the game too, and now they were as fond of it as our own countrymen. He himself I was fond of sports and games, because he believed they were a good training for the whole of their lives. Sports taught them self-control, how to play the game according to the rules, and never to hit below the belt. That was what the Germans could never learn. They had no sporting instincts, and they could not play the game according to the rules. He hoped they (the soldiers) would look upon the events at the sports ffaat afternoon as an incentive to action on the field of battle. At the sports, the judges had declared some of them to be winners, and he hoped a higher judge—he referred to Sir John French-would eventually declare them to be all winners and to be worthy of the V.C. (ap- plause). Col. Lort Phillips (commanding the Pembroke Imperial Yeomanry Reserve) proposed votes of thanks, and referred to Lord Dynevor's generosity in throwing open Dynevor Park for the use of the troops at Llandilo. Col. W. J. Jones (commanding the Reserve Bat- talion 4th Welsh Regiment) seconded the votes, which were enthusiastically carried. During the evening, the following contributed to an interesting musical programme, viz.:—Mr. T. A. Jones, Mr. H. Brunei White. Lance-Corpl. Jones, Mr. Evans, and Assistant Scout Master Frank Thomas; and Mr. T. C. Evans (,-in employee at the Joint Counties' Mental Hospital) give a display of "lightning sketches." Mr. Harold Malkin, F.R.C.O., was the accompanist.

LLANDEFEIL0G The C.M. Church at Llanedy have decided not to remain long with'out a pastor to succeed the Rev. I R. J. Jones, who has taken up the pastorate of Penygraig C.M. Chapel. The choice has fallen on the Rev. D. Lloyd Griffiths, Llandefeilog; the r> 1 of the church being entirely unanimous iii tne j matter. It is hoped that the reply will be in the affirmative, for Mr. Griffiths is strong as a pulpiteer, and in other directions, pertaining to church work. He is also well kn-o n as a highly cultured musician. w lg On Easter Day the services were well attended, and the number of communicants exceeded all previ- ous records. The singing was exceptionally good I under the leadership of Mr. J. D. Jones, who also presided at the organ in his usual able manner. EASTER VESTRY.-The Easter Vestry was held on Monday, the Vicar presiding. The Vicar's warden, Mr. Rd. Williams, Crugan-fach, submitted the church accounts, which were very satisfactory, showing a "balance in hand of B4. The Vicar appointed Mr. O. T. Williams, Rose and Crown, as his warden for the ensuing year, and Mr. Williams, Crugan-fach, the last year's vicar's warden was elected parish warden. FEAItYSlOE OBITUABY.—We regret to announce the death of Mr. John Thomas, son of Mr. David Thomas, Roberts Rest Farm, Ferryside, at the age of 36 years. The deceased was a deacon at Bethania Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Ferryside, and a trea- surer of the Sunday school. He took a very active part in all movements connected with the cause and Sunday school, and was held in high regard by all who knew him. He was of a retiring disposition, and was always ready to give a helping hand to all in need. The funeral took place on the 29th ult., when a large concourse of friends assembled to pay their last token of respect to his memory, the inter- ment being at Salem Cemetery. The following officiated :-The Revs. D. J. Lewis, Isaac Thomas, R. Thomas (Baptist). Pritchard (B.). The Rev. T. Williams, curate-in-charge of St. Thomas, was also present. The coffin, which was of pannelled oak, was covered with floral tributes. The sincere sym- pathy of the neighbourhood is extended to the family in their bereavement. BETHANIA.—At Bethania C. Methodist Chapel, the Rev. Isaac Thomas entertained the members of the Band of Hope and congregation to an excellent tea, and in the evening a concert and competitive meet- ing were held under the auspices cf the Band of Hope, under the able leadership of Mr. C. E. Hughes, London House. A very pleasant evening was spent. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Rev. Isaac Thomas for his generosity, and to the chairman, Mr. Thomas Davies, Maesmawr; and to Mr. C. E. Hughes for the painstaking efforts he had taken in training the children during the winter months, and for the excellent entertainment he had arranged. EASTER.—The usual service was held at St. Thomas' Church, when large congregations attended. The service was conducted by the Rev. T. Williams, whose sermons were much appreciated. SALEM.—The half-yearly services were held at Salem Chapel, when powerful sermons were deli- vered to a large congregation. We are pleased to see amongst us Privates Benny Davies, The Stores, who was wounded in France. and Privates Wm. Evans. Sydney Evans, and Jimmy Davies, who were invalided home from France, and Private Tommy Edwards, from Abergavenny. CHILD DROWNED.-A little child, named Leslie. the two-year-old son of Mr. Evan Arthur, living 011 th Beach. Ferryside, was drowned on Thursday morning of last week. Three young children were playing together near a pool. when the little fellow fell in and was drowned before an alarm was given. There was only 18in. of water in the pool. left by the receding tide. An inquest was held at the schoolroom on Monday last by Mr. J. W. Nicholas. coroner. A verdict of "Accidental death from drown- ing" was returned. The jury returned their fees to the parents, with whom they also passed a vote of sym- pathy. The funeral took place on Saturday at St. Ishmael, when the Rev. T. Williams officiated.

LLANWENDG CONFIRMATION SERVICE.—On Monday, the 29th ult., the Lord Bishop of St. David's held a con- firmation service at the Parish Church at 11 a.m., when 18 candidates were presented from the two parishes of Llanwenog and Llanybyther. His lord- ship addressed the candidates in English and Welsh. The Vicar (the Rev. J. Morris, M.A.) acted as the Bishop's chaplain, whilst the candidates were pre- sented by the Rev. T. Thomas, B.A., curate. Col. H. Davies-Evans presided at the organ. After the service all the candidates and others from far sat at tea provided for them by some of the members of Llanwenog Church, to whom thanks are due. EASTER SUNDAY.—The Church servioes were well attended, and a large number of communicants par- took of the Holy Sacrament at the 9 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. services. The Vicar officiated in the morning, and the Curate in the evening. DIOCESAN REPORT.—The following is a copy of the Diocesan Inspectof s report upon the religious in- struction imparted at the Llanwenog Church of England School:—" Excellent work has been done in this school during the past year. The Old and New Testaments had been very thoroughly pre- pared, And the other selected portions of the sylla- bus had been equally carefully taught, with the satisfactory result that the children answered very readily and intelligently on the day of inspection."

ST. ANNE'S. CWMFFRWB EASTER DAY.—The services were exceedingly well attended. In the afternoon at 3 clocK. Jon Easter Egg Service was held for the children. This is an annual event, which is much appr by the junior members of the congregation. This year again it was well attended, and we are able to send a nice basket of otrrrs (numbering over 12m to the Red Cons ^os; i al, Carmarthen, or Mis* Armstrong together with the Misses Majory and Eira Barker in their turn, render valuable services at that institution. There was a special ring of pathos in all the services this year as we thought of all our brave soldiers and sailors who have laid their lives down for their country. The offertories were given .to the curate-in-charge as an "Easter offering" and constituted a record, amounting to £10 5s. 9d. During Holy Week many members joined in the chain of intercessions for the Welsh Church, organ- ized by the Honourable Mrs. Gell and arranged for St Anne's district by Colonel Aslett. Bolahaul, whose devotion to the old Mother Church" is paramount to everything.

LLANGUNNOR EASTER SERVICES.—The old Church of Llangun- nor was well attended on Easter Sunday, those from a distance having made an effort to attend. There were celebrations cf Holy Communion at 8 o'clock and also at 10.30 a.m., at which service the Vicar gave a very appropriate address bearing upon the comfort the teaching of the Resurrection carries to I the bereaved and sorrowful this Eastertide. He also preached at the evening service. The Church was very tastefully decorated for the occasion by the following ladies:—Altar vases and pulpit, Mrs. Jen- kins, The Vicarage, assisted by Miss Harris and Miss Geraldine Davies-Evans, Bryntowy; altar rails and reading desk, Miss Phillips, Green Hill; font, Miss Francis. LLANARTHNEY EASTER VESTRY.—The annual vestry was held on Easter Monday at 7 p.m., the Vicar (the Rev. J. Jenkins, B.D.) presiding. The balance sheet for the year was read and confirmed, in connection with which it was explained that the Church had made contributions towards the Prince of Wales' War Fund, Red Cross Soiety, and the Belgian Refugees Fund. There was a balance of JB2 in hand. The sum of £10 had also been sent to the Diocesan Board of Finance. For the coming year the Vicar ap- pointed Mr. James Maddocks (junior), Bailiglas, as his warden, and the people appointed Mr. T. Wil- liams, Treclos, as their warden. The number of communicants on Easter Sunday was larger than usual.

OBIfach DISASTROUS NRE.-A disastrous fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning in the work- shop of Mr. D. H. Davies, Derwlwvn, Drefach. Soon after the warning was given, a large crowd gathered, and there was no lack of willing hands. The workshop, which contained a large quantity of timber and other building materials, was completely gutted, and the loss is estimated to be over £ 300. On the Saturday evening a public meeting was held at. the National Schoolroom to make arrangements for showing practical sympathy with Mr. Davies. Alderman J. Lewis. J.P., Meiros Hall, presided, and Mr. John Jones. Gwalia House, was appointed treasurer, and Mr. J. J. Evans. Geler View, Drefach. secretary. Several collectors were appointed to canvass the district for subscriptions. About 214 have been promised towards this worthy object. PONTYBEREM. The Bishop of St. David's held a confirmation service at St. John's Church on Wednesday of last week, when 93 candidates were confirmed. From Felinfoel there were 38, from Pontyberem 41, and from Llannon and Tumble 12.
