1 BRECONSHIRE CHARITIES. C…
1 BRECONSHIRE CHARITIES. C i From the Commissionere lieport of 1836. PARISH OF DEVYNNOCK. HAVARD'S CHARITY. 1 Lewis Havard, by Will, dated 12th May, 1716, and proved at Brecon in the same year, gave for S the benefit of the poor of the hamlets of Cray, 4 Maescar, and Senny, in this parish, 10s. annually 1 to each of the two former hamlets, and 20s, to the latter, payable on the 2nd of February, and charged the same on his own two tenements in Blaen Glyn Tawe, in the county of Brecon. f These tenements, known as Blae Nant yr Wydd, are situate in Blae Glyn Tawe, in the Parish of Llywell, and comprise a farm, the property of William Dillwyn; of Penile y Gaer, in the County I of Glamorgan, and in the occupation of David I Williams. j The 21. is regularly paid by Mr. Maybery of Brecon, solicitor, (the agent for Mr. Dillwyn), to |3 the churchwardens of Devynnock, who distribute |J the same due to Cray and Maescar, on St. Thomas's day, with the Baddege (or Morgan Watkins's) i Charity, in the proportions mentioned above and l the 20s. in Senny, on the 2nd day of February, [ among the poor of that hamlet, not receiving parish pay.
MORGAN WATKINS'S, CHARITY.…
MORGAN WATKINS'S, CHARITY. F B* appears, by an entry in a book containing an acTOunt of the benefactions to -this parish, that Morgan Watkins, by Will, dated 1699, bequeath- ed annually to the poor of the parish of Devyn- nock the rental and profits of a farm in the hamlet of Modridd, to be distributed among them on St. Tbomas's-day. This farm adjoins to1 a hill called Twyn Faillan i on the south, the Old road from Brecon to Merthyr i on the north, Cy Fartha Farm on the east, and Carnog Farm on the west. It is now, caHed Bad- dege, and contains 130 acres, about 40 acres of which are coppice. This farm is held by William Hughes; a farmer, under an agreement for a lease for 21 years, from Michaelmas 1835, dated 28th September, 1835, at the fair net rent of 34Z. 10s. The house and farm-buildings j being in a very dilapidated state, have been pulled down and are now, nearly re-erected. Mr. Hughes has under- taken to 'pay the. whole expense of these erections, about 150l; and it was agreed that he should re- pay himself by detaining yearly 12Z. 10s, from the rent until the whole advance is deducteo. There are no trustees of this charity • and in the absence of the Will, which cannot be found, the entire management of the estate and dispositiolÚoÍ its produce is left to the minister of the parish. The net rent of the farm is divided on St.. Thomas's-day, among all the settled poor of the parish not receiving parochial aid, in sums varying from 2s. 6d. to 12s. The recipients are chosen by "In the vestry and a book kept in which their names are regularly entered.
HAMLET OF SENNY.
HAMLET OF SENNY. WALTER'S CHARITY. BaHd Walter, by Will dated 12th April, 1723, and proved in the Pregrotative court of Canterbury in the same year, gave five houses (one whereof he directed should be divided into two) and six gar- dens, in the hamlet of Senny, to six poor persons of the. said hamlet or for default of such within the said hamlet, then to six poor persons of the parish of Devynnock at large, to be by them en- joyed for their lives and, upon the deaths of any of the said poor persons, to be filled iip- ',from time to time, from such persons as aforesaid, by the heirs male of the testator and the testator direct- ed that each of the said sir poor persons should yearly work one day at harvest in. the lands then in his possession, as an acknowledgement that they held their houses under his Will. The testator, by his said Will, also charged'the messuage, tenement, and lands, then in the pos-, session of his brother William Walter, with the payment of the yearly siimr Of 51. towards placing out one or two poor children of the hamlet of Sen- ny to be apprentices to some honest, trade, calling, or mystery the said poor child or children to be such as should not or could not have the benefit of being placed pursuant to the Will of Sir John Davy, and to be yearly chosen by him that should | be the heir male of the testator, and for want of I such poor children in the hamlet of Senny, then 1 that the same should be chosen out of the parish of I Devynnock at large. The five houses left for the residence of six per- sons (one of them having been divided into two) were tenanted as directed by the testator, until some years past, went down from want of repair. They are consequently now reduced to two houses and six gardens. The two houses and three of the i gardens are situate in Senny village. One has I I been rebuilt by a person named David Thomas, 1 1 who is now in possession of it, with one of the ,| gardens. The other has been rebuilt by David j Elias, and remains still in his possession, with one I of the garden. The third garden is in the posses- "j sion of Mary Watkins, a pauper. The other three gardens are distant about 150 yards from the vil- lage, to the south. One has been thrown into land belonging to Mr. Dillwyn, about 20 years the second remains inclosed, and is in the possession of the above-named David Thomas and the third is now thrown into Maeswalter Farm. The poor derive no benefit from any portions of the above property. The 51. charged for the purpose of apprenticing was regularly paid until about seven years ago, I at which period it was discontinued. The last ( 1 possessor of the estate who paid the money was Mr I John Havard. The present owner, Anthony f Mervyn Storey, Esq., purchased the estate in Nov. 1833 from George Watkins, Esq., and in reply to an application made to lie has declared him- self ready to discharge the arrears which have be- come due since he entered into possession, and to continue the payment in future so soon as a proper « discharge can be given to him for the amount Strict inquiries were made as to the manner in S which the apprentice fee, while received, was ap- f plied, but without sucecss, as no evidence appear- ed to exist upon the subject. m
