THE LATEST DODGE IN POST-OFFICE…

THE LATEST DODGE IN POST-OFFICE SWINDLING. A new dodge in swindling, through the medium of the Post-office, has been brought to light and exposed in Carlisle. A short time ago a person drew an order at the post-office at Lancaster for three shillings. One day last week he arrived at Carlisle with it and called upon a tradesman in whose line of business he repre- sented himself to be, and added that lie was looking after a contract at Raisbeck, near Shap. After some conversation about the supposed contract, the stranger intimated that he had run short of cash, and re- quested the favour of the loan of .£5 upon a post-office order, which, on account of the money order office being closed, he could not get cashed in Carlisle. This order was the one drawn at Lancaster for 3a.; but in the meantime the Raisbeck "contractor" had inserted the figure 8" before the 3," and thus made it represent the amount of £8 3s. Under the circumstances, it would be a great con- venience to him if he could get X5 advanced upon the order, and in the course of a week, on his return, he would call for the balance of .£3 3s. The unsuspect- ing tradesman never doubting the genuineness of the order, or the honesty of his friend advanced the money, and the stranger left with thanks." When he re- turned he would give more particulars about the con- tract. On inday last the accommodating tradesman presented the order at the money order office at Car- lisle to be cashed, but as it did not agree with the advice note to the Carlisle office, the clerk refused to pay the money, as the advice order was only for 3s. The sol "was at once discovered. The "contractor" has not yet returned from Glasgow, and the trades- man who is entitled to 3s. on the order loses £ 4> 17s. by the friendly transaction.
